Spanish families adopt galgos – Pro-Galgo tells their tales

Max forever family 190 Pro-Galgo have some wonderful rehoming stories to tell, including that of Max, the little puppy covered in red varnish. All credit to Pro Galgo who did such a fantastic job of rescuing this little puppy, cleaning him up and rehoming him.

Also galgos who have been happily rehomed with Spanish families. Which is great news. That there are Spanish families who do not believe that galgos are vermin, that they appreciate these fantastic loving, loyal dogs. You can read some of their stories here.

But sadly there is another side to some tales of galgos being adopted in Spain.

During my visits to the country, I have heard tell of galgo pets being stolen, only for the distraught owner to be contacted some weeks later to say ‘hey, we have found your dog. But you have to pay us some money to get it back.’ So, it could be an earner for the gitans.

I’ve driven through streets in Spanish towns, been stuck at traffic lights or in a petrol station, and people peer in. ‘Hey, you, what you doing with vermin in your car?’ (In Spanish), pointing to the galgos which I am taking back to France for adoption.

And a final sad tale of a beautiful galgo adopted from a Spanish refuge by a British couple living in Spain. He thought he had got to paradise. Then 3 or 4 years later, they moved back to the UK. And do you know what these horrid Brits did – they returned him to the refuge! They couldn’t even be bothered to prepare a Pets Passport for him – it only takes 7 months – so he could go back with them. I curse them!!!

So, it’s great to hear of galgos being rehomed in Spain, and I desperately hope that the rest of the tale of these galgos spending the rest of their lives with their Spanish adoptants will have a natural ending.

But for me, admittedly not living in Spain, but visiting often, there are eyes everywhere with a chance to steal a galgo to make some money or cause trouble for the galgos adopted as pets………………..

It is indeed heartwarming that some of the people in Spain are adopting these beautiful dogs. I wish every dog ended up with a loving family.
