Regular readers will know that besides being passionate about galgos, I am also passionate about podencos. And they suffer horrendously at the hands of hunters too, especially cruelty but also they are the dogs who end up with a leg caught in a ghastly metal snare – these traps are illegal in the UK.
I’ve featured the story about poor Bone, and the little Podenca Andaluz who needs a shelter to take her so that she can have an operation on her eyes, and now here is another podenca, rescued from near death in freezing temperatures.
Cristina says, ‘this is sweet little MANDY, one year old podenca, 43 cm. She was found in the middle of the countryside when volunteer Rosario went to the shelter to see to her dogs. Mandy was totally frozen and one of her legs was very much in danger. It was one of those terribly freezing days, very cold and wet. Mandy had spent the night right there, starving, helpless and so weak.
Rosario took her immediately to the vet and she said that she needed immediately warmth so that the poor sweety didn’t lose the leg.
Rosario put her in two blankets near the heat and there she stayed the whole day, and the whole night. She slept endless hours and you just could see her ears out of the blankets. She didn’t even want to eat, only drank a bit of chicken soup. Rosario was very worried but she succeeded…as always.
The next morning Mandy began to eat and her leg was safe.’ She’s now looking for a home through L’Europe des Levriers.
The galgos great friend Charl spent 10 hours at Estepona, for the second time, trying to catch an abandoned galga. She didn’t manage to catch the galga, but she did catch an abandoned podenco, covered in fleas and with terrible long claws. He is microchipped, so I wait to hear the outcome of his story. Here she is de-fleaing him!
Besides these podencos, we should also remember the Ibizan hounds and Podenco Canarios, on the Spanish islands. It is even harder to find homes for them because – if they can rehome a podenco outside of the island – then people need to be found to fly with them, as airlines won’t let a dog fly unless there is a passenger accompanying it.
Please take time to look at the SARA shelter, PAWS and Ibizan Hound Rescue, as well as the association websites for the podencos mentioned above.
Podencos also make fabulous pets too.l

Hi Beryl
Do they have a diagnosis for the little Podenco Andaluz now, and is there a surgical treatment available which would cure her sight problem?

Bonjour
I have written to the lady who sent me the
appeal. I will post on GN as soon as I hear from her.
Kate posted some details of hospitals where the
little dog could have treatment, but it is a case of getting an association, in
an area of one of these hospitals, to take thepodenca into their care, and
then we can appeal for donations.
I only postappeals for donations to be made
through associations, to be sure the money is not going to a private
person.
Therehave been rumours in the past of one or
two people trying to use appealsthrough the Internet, playing on peoples
sympathy, but pocketing the money.
I will be sure to let everyone know when I hear
back from the lady who saved this dear deserving little dog.
Thank you for caring

Bonjour
I have now heard back that the little podenquita is
with the association El Refugio; I have asked for more details as to whether
they are in an area where there is a hospital which could carry out the required
operation on her.
Will post an update when I know more.

Latest update is that the association El Refugio is
taking veterinary advice as to what can be done to help the little podenquita
and eventually look for a forever home for her.
Good news for the little dog. And great
thanks to her rescuer and El Refugio.

That’s great news. Hopefully her condition can be treated. Will keep watching for more news as I would like to make a donation towards the vet costs. Thanks for keeping us informed.

Bonjour
I have explained to Rosa that people may wish to
donate towards vets fees for the little podenca. Have a look at the
website link I posted, there may be a PayPal box.
When I have donated from my own Galgo Fun (from the
sale of notelets for eg.) towards the cost of vet fees for a badly injured
galgo, the association is always very kind to send a copy of the bill from the
vet.
You may wish to contact Rosa via the email address
on the post, or El Refugio direct, asking them. I use Spanishdict.com to
translate my English into Spanish – another helpful GN reader suggested it as a
good translator tool.
Thanks for caring.
