So who claims that theft of galgos doesn’t happen? The worst time is August and September, before the hunting season starts. But Pro Galgo proves it happens all the time. Look into the eyes of this galgo…..he has been stolen and taken back to a life of sheer hell at the hands of either hunters (for breeding) or gitanos.
My heart bleeds for these poor dogs. I die a little each day for them and my anger against the galgueros and gitanos knows no bounds. Bastards!

Do they break into houses and steal the dogs? Are the dogs left outside? How do they take them?

Bonjour
The problem for the galgos is that, when they are
rescued from the streets or wherever, they are usually taken to an association –
rather than the dog pound – and put in a shelter. The shelters are often
quite remote with no one on the premises at night. Thus the gitanos break
into the shelter and steal the galgos, for breeding more galgos to sell to the
galgueros in September, ready for hunting next season. In this case, a lot
of damage was done to the shelter in order to break into it. It has been
reported to the police but they usually take little action.
Associations would very much like to be able to
afford CCTV so that they might stand some chance of catching the perpetrators,
but of course money is always tight, and it is soon swallowed up caring for the
dogs.
Sickening, isnt it. Year on year on year –
no wonder volunteers like Tina get close to heartbreak with the emotional
pressure.

Ah…now I understand. Very tragic. Yes CCTV would be perhaps a deterrent.

Its ironic, at this time of year, that galgos are stolen. A website of one of the main animal refuges claims that the theft of galgos has dropped. Personally, moving around Spain, viewing association websites, I have yet to see confirmation of that.
The galgo is viewed as a hunting tool, it is inbuilt into the Spanish makeup – through religion – that animals have no feelings – they cannot feel pain – ……………..expletives!!! Donkeys, bulls for fighting, firebulls, firehorses…………horses are terrified of fire!
But we also need to remember that there are now so many Spaniards who are aware of the cruelty inflicted on the animals of Spain, and the bad press it gets around the world, and who would really wish to stop all this cruelty.
I would not wish to tarnish all the Spanish with the same brush. Slowly, but unfortunately TOO slowly, Spain is wakening up to the fact that, through the power of the Internet, it is getting very bad publicity about its attitude to animals.
So we all have to keep plugging away.
Thanks for your support, as ever.
