One of the chapters in my book ‘From Heaven to Hell – The Story of the Galgo Espanol’ looks at Spanish and International animal welfare associations. One of these is the WSPA – World Society for Protection of Animals. Many of the galgo rescue associations proudly display the WSPA logo on their websites.
My research showed that in 2002 WSPA carried out a ‘long term investigation’ with Scooby Medina into exposing the inhu8mand disposal of Spanish hunting dogs. The WSPA finished working on the issue on 2004.
I asked the WSPA why they had abandoned the galgos and the terrible annual holocaust. Their spokesperson replied.
‘In 2004 we urged people to send letters of protest to the President of Spain. We met with the Spanish Government on two occasions, encouraging them to adopt a Charter for the Welfare of Spanish Hunting Dogs, but unfortunately this was unsuccessful. The Spanish Government did however amend the Spanish Penal Code (article 337) in 2003 to make cruelty to galgos a criminal act, with punishment of imprisonment’.
Basically, they felt they had ‘done their bit’ and from 2004 WSPA abandoned the galgos!

España debe estar completamente avergonzado de que se
ignora el resto del mundo ejerciendo presión sobre ella para poner fin al
holocausto anual de galgos. Por no hablar de las corridas de toros, lucha libre de
caballos, burros apedreada hasta la muerte. Estas personas sádicas son una plaga sobre los millones

Dear WSPA,
I understand that in 2002 you carried out a ‘long term investigation’ with Scooby Medina into exposing the inhumane disposal of Spanish hunting dogs. The WSPA finished working on the issue on 2004.

I can assure you there are many of us from across the globe who care deeply for these dogs. We have written letters, etc. I commend you for having met with the Spanish Government.
Over the last couple of years, more and more people have become aware of the plight of the Galgos. The Spanish Government is under increasing scrutiny over this situation.
I am writing you to PLEASE revisit this matter with the Spanish Government. You have the clout and influence to work for some positive changes for the Galgos.
