Regular readers will remember Estrela and Joy, two galgos rescued from terrible conditions in Portugal. Both happily rehomed. But these two little dogs have now been taken off the streets into the caring hands of Teresa and her team at Portugal Dog Rescue. They aren’t galgos or podencos, The vet bills will be enormous. If you can spare a little towards the cost, please donate to Portugal Dog Rescue. Paypal donations here
This is Pantufa, Slipper in English, who had to be operated on twice to remove the 2 hernias (I’ve never seen a dog with such a huge hernia, and I’ve seen some big ones!) She haemorraged, not surprisingly, but is now recovering, in a lot of pain and has a fever. She is in the vet clinic. UPDATE 12/07/13: Pantufa went for her surgery and after close observation it turned out that Pantufa had, in fact, a gigantic hernia, besides the already noticed one. The surgeon had never seen so much intestine in a single spot, and does not know how she did not die long ago. In fact, the pink scar she had was from a previous, not successful hernia surgery. Must have been long before the old lady found her abandoned. Well anyway, she is all done and expected to make a full recovery. She is staying with Teresa for the next couple of weeks to make sure she rests and takes her medicine on time.
This other little soul was found on the street in Alentejo in the baking sun – a severe case of mange. Her treatment is going to be lengthy and costly too as Teresa says she is very sick. She has ehrlichia tick fever, severe mange, anaemia and sunburn.
If you can help Teresa and Ines with the vet bills, every little helps. Thank you.
