20th May update on container dogs from Viv Wharton:-
Sorry I missed posting my update here yesterday. There isnt much more to tell, apart from we know the dogs are still barking and sounds the same. We are talking all the time with our PAES defensa partners (the legal team) working on this; the petition has around 20,000 signatures; some people think we are relying on the petition to get the dogs out, this is not so…we will get them out only through legal chanels – which are the denuncias that have been placed.
Sadly in Spain you cannot get an investigation without an order, which is why we had to do the denuncias. There was a denuncia from a year ago and it was investigated and found that there was nothing to answer to and all was well. This probably because the denuncia was a complaint without enough knowledge of the law. We have quoted the laws that are being broken, so they have to listen. There is not an easy way to push them but we are trying.
PACMA are involved and supporting. The petition may help, but as an awareness tool and for media publicity as back up it will be useful….we will update when there is more news…thanks for listening and supporting and please keep sharing the petition, which now has a German translation included.

It still amazes me that a supposedly civilized European country can act this way with such blatant disregard for the welfare of animals. That they still think that animals are “things” and not sentient, living beings is very telling… Such a thing would be totally unacceptable here in Canada and the local SPA and shelters would have been able to move in quickly and liberate those dogs, because here the law is applied in such cases. Granted, we are not perfect and things still happen to animals here that absolutely shouldn’t, but not to the extent that it happens in Spain… It’s so discouraging to see that there seems to be no political will to change things.I really feel for associations like ACTIN and the numerous Spanish shelters and volunteers, they have to deal with roadblocks at all levels.
