A volunteer with Yo Galgo reports. ‘Yesterday we returned to the mass grave in Tarancón to take out the bodies of the galgos that, during years, have been thrown there, and to try to find evidence to persecute the perpetrators of this crime. The place, known as The Cut, has been used for more than 20 years to dump galgos no longer wanted by their owners. The volunteers recovered 25 bodies, but for safety reasons it was impossible to reach the deeper layers of the pit, where dozens of galgos were piled up.
At least two bodies I photographed last time I was there have disappeared. A clear indication that their owners, frightened by the repercussion of the news, have returned to remove the corpses of their dogs. This is interesting because the hunting society always claims that abandoned or killed dogs, are dogs that have been stolen, “as no galguero would treat their dog like that”. UPDATE 27/02. After yesterday’s post, many of you have asked questions about the Tarancón case. The authorities have not wanted to handle the dead dogs, and that’s why it was volunteers who met to take them out if the pit. We had been promised the needed equipment by the city hall, but once there, they didn’t want to provide it. The Mayor showed up trying to convince us to leave the dogs and cover the pit with lime; he clearly wanted the story to disappear. But we insisted, as this is a crime that needs to be investigated, and under the supervision of the Nature Protective Service we took out the dogs.
There is no need to tell you how awful this was – you can all imagine that – but there was a moment of joy when we found a chip in one of the galgos. This will help build a case, along with some other evidence as well. Today the volunteers will be the ones getting rid of the bodies. Hats off to them for doing a task that’s clearly not their responsibility. We’ll keep you updated – hopefully justice will be served.’
