Beautiful words taken from a post on Bev Farmer’s page on Podenco Friends. So true.
“There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who choose to travel in the company of animals. It is a cycle unlike any other. To those who have never lived through its turnings and walked its rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with full knowledge that they will be broken seems incomprehensible. Only we know how small a price we pay for what we receive, our grief, no matter how powerful it may be, is an insufficient measure of the joy we have been given.”
From Bev. ‘This photo of PJ came up on my FB memories.. He was so special wise beyond his age. I had no intention of taking on a pup, it was the wrong time in my life. I knew I had become very attached to him and he had declared that I was his mum. PJ’s first night in the house, it was like he had been here for ever. He jumped up on the sofa and curled beside me. All the dogs accepted him .. Then it was time for bed. I popped him on top of it and as we settled down, he snook up between Tilly and me under the duvet and never moved the whole night.
I knew then he was staying but then the news that he had a condition so rare that there wasn’t an existing surgical technique to repair the problem. PJ was only with us a few weeks but he filled the home with so much happiness and laughter. I miss him but so glad he came into my life.’
The cycle of love we know so well – we welcome them into our hearts, they give us so much low, and when they leave us it leaves a hole in our hearts. But we still have the treasured memories.
