Protectora Scooby Newsletter 2 – Welfare and Tired Computers

From Fermin Perez.

We are always pushing for welfare developments for animals living in Spain. Unexpectedly we acquired a new dimension to this area of our work. The Spanish government proposed an update to our animal welfare legislation. It was so ground-breaking, it seemed too good to be true. We realised it was when the Government acquiesced to demands from the Spanish hunting community and agreed to exclude hunting dogs. Given the thousands of hunting dogs exploited, abused and dumped in Spain every year, this is an amendment to the proposed legislative update Spanish rescues and animal advocates are unwilling to take lying down. We have been part of an active campaign calling on the Government to withdraw the amendment. It centres on the fact a dog is a dog and all breeds should be equal in the eyes of the law : “#MismosPerrosMismaLey”. We write more about this issue later in the newsletter but sadly it looks as if the Government is unwilling to take the necessary steps to protect hunting dogs.

Tired Computers

Another challenge for us, is the amount of administration we need to complete to comply with international adoption & transportation rules. Over the years this has become more sophisticated, data intensive and complicated. We totally understand animal exports need to be regulated and welfare in transit has to be assured. We also comprehend that governments must eliminate the transporters and smugglers who try to circumvent the rules. The result is our administrator burns the midnight oil when preparing all of the paperwork in compliance with the regulations for the the EU, UK USA & Canada; for the Spanish official veterinarian and export agency, the customs brokers and airlines. She battles late into the night often for several transports per month to punch data into online portals or fill out official forms. We are fortunate to have worked on donated computers in our little office over the years. These are now cracking under the strain and we could really do with one or two faster, high spec, large capacity computers. We would love to have a PC with 32 GB of RAM, a hard disk m2 of 512 GB or even better 1
TB. This would certainly expedite the work and streamline our admin significantly.

If you would like to contribute, we’d be grateful for your donation (marked: ‘office computer’). Thank you.

As ever, I am hoping for a better time for animals in the New Year. Major steps would be a positive change to the proposed animal welfare law for Spain including hunting dogs, a increased demand from good homes for rescued dogs and cats…and streamlined administration for our adoptions.

In the meantime, I wish you a warm, peaceful, relaxing and happy Christmas.
