‘ A few days ago we collected this galgo at Clínica Veterinaria Puerto De Mazarròn.
In collaboration with Friends of Mazarrón Animals, this big boy, Señorito, can look forward to a new, different and better life.
Unfortunately, he tested positive for both Dirofilaria and Leishmania, 2 of the toughest Mediterranean diseases. How much bad luck can you have.
Both originate from a sting of an unsightly mosquito, but a sting with major consequences and if not treated eventually fatal. However, you can perfectly protect them against this with pipettes, collars or even a vaccination. But that costs some money and to hunters their dogs are not worth that to them.
Dirofilaria (heartworm) is treatable and curable, though it’s a long and complex treatment. Cocktail of medication, Milbemax and 2-3 injections.
Leishmaniasis is treatable but not curable, the dog has that for life. But with proper treatment and follow-up (regular new blood analysis), they can have a perfectly normal life. (The dog needs to be kept as still as possible so the worm is not triggered to move!)
It was sad to see this boy, completely emotionless, being handed over like some discarded object.
And that after having served his master for almost 8 years….
The vet also immediately checked a blood sample under the microscope, there are already nasty worms present in his blood. This means that the worms will find or have already found their way to the heart. Additional examination will have to reveal whether or not his heart has been spared.
Señorito is no longer alone, together we are going to fight the battle.
He faces a long treatment and recovery period.
Help with vet fees will be appreciated, thank you.
