  • Forgiveness – what dogs can teach humans

It never ceases to amaze me how forgiving dogs are, no matter what hellish treatment is visited upon them by sub-humans who do not care. Here are two videos I want to share with you. The first one is the rescue of a traumatized starving galgo by El Refugio. The second is the rescue of a little puppy by the side of a dual carriageway, and her amazing transformation in rehabilitation.

  • Figures for galgos and podencos

This is the report I presented to the PAES International Conference on Animal Welfare in Spain in 2016.

Let’s look at estimated ANNUAL figures for uncontrolled breeding of galgos and podencos.

    GALGOS

Back in the early 1990’s, a friend of mine who was a Daily Mail staff photographer, was visiting the Castile-la Mancha province. His guide walked him into an olive grove where Jim photographed the olive trees, most of which had a dead galgo hanging from them, which made headlines in the paper.

In 2009 SOS Galgos (Barcelona) claimed on their website that 160 galgos were abandoned every day.
That equates to 58,400 galgos every year, abandoned or dumped in perreras for killing, including reports of galgos hung in olive groves. With all the adverse publicity, the galgueros responded by abandoning their dogs and dumping them in perreras in greater numbers. There are now fewer instances of hangings because – however much the galgueros claim ‘there are no hangings’ – digital photos on the Internet accurately show dates and times and show the real truth. And because now one or two associations are not afraid of instigating court action against these dog-murdering men. And I’m talking about podencos being hung, as well as galgos.

  • Daily Mail lifts the lid on the plight of the galgos

You can read the full article on this link. However, I would disagree that the number is up to 50,000, it is nearer the 100,000 as per my report to the PAES conference in Spain in 2016.

  • 23/24 February – Scooby collect 48 galgos

‘It has been exhausting traveling several hundred kilometres in 20 hours to pick up these galgos in different places of Extremadura and Andalucia, but the effort, of course, has been worth it. Now these galgos, to which an uncertain future awaited them will have the opportunity to know the warmth of a home and the love of a family.

We want to thank all those who, in one way or another, support our work, because without your help, we would not be able to save and change so many lives.

  • 2 galgos abandoned, starving, tied up in a field!

    ADBA galgos 1 400 20 2 2019
Two galgas tied up and abandoned in a field left to who knows what fate! Here’s their story from the volunteers.

‘We were told of 2 abandoned galgas tied in the field. When we got to them they were very weak and malnourished, no chip of course! We took them to the vet, where after doing the tests of erlichia and leishmania, they tested negative. They stayed at the vet clinic for a couple of days where they were given food and vitamins.

They are now in the shelter with their special food and vitamins.

If anyone wants to donate for them, we would greatly appreciate it as we have hardly any funds. Contact by whatsapp at 655 58 50 42.

    We have named them –

  • Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert – saving galgos

    FBM Lazarus 400 13 2 2019
Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert is a large refuge near Seville which has been rescuing , and saving hunting dogs for many years. This is one of their boys waiting for a forever home soon.

‘Lazarus, a three-legged grandfather. In January we rescued Lazaro, an 8-Year-old who came with his paw shattered in a hit. He had an old ulna and radial fracture and the carpal was very damaged. We have not been able to save his leg and to improve his mobility we have had to amputate.

We know from experience that dogs quickly get over amputations and in a short time live a completely normal life. We would love for him to find a family that adore this three-foot grandfather. Would you give it to hin?

  • Galga Frida – abandoned with a badly broken leg

    ACTUA Frida 400 2 2019

Last week Little Frida was found in the middle of athe field with one leg broken by two parts, victim, unfortunately, of not being good enough to hunt, so she has has been discarded.

She has been operated on and is now recovering in a foster home in Ciudad Real capital, so that she can recover from the post-op and can attend its periodic reviews until she is recovered.

It’s a shame to meet these cases.

Beauties like the Spanish Galgos, which mostly are used for fun of a few and when when they are not of use, they are abandoned to their luck.

  • The Accidental – should it be failed – Fosterer!

Jan Brinegar Luka and peace 400
How many of you are like me, failed fosterers?! Jan in the US is one, for sure! Here’s the story of one of hers.

I have been crazy about greyhounds for years. I did my research and was sure that this was the dog for me. I adopted my first greyhound about three years ago from Regap of Illinois. Once I felt comfortable having a big dog in my house (greyhounds aren’t really that big but I have always had small terriers) I started thinking and hoping to add a second hound to my family. Unfortunately my Mom was not too happy with the idea of adding a third dog to the house. I already had a wired hair fox terrier and two parrots besides my greyhound Luka. She felt it would be too crowded and crazy with a third dog.
