Three galgos – one starving and desperately needing help.

Toledo galga maguila Ashaprotectora 190 11 2012This one is Magilla, a big male Greyhound, which was collected from street by the police, in poor condition all frightened, trembling, with bad pintilla, and it seems that they bleed the legs in the kennel! • Portugal – Galga Estrela – update

Saturday – Ines says ‘Today Estrela has shown clear signs of improvement; she ate a whole kilo of beef liver, and was bouncing around Teresa like a puppy. Hopefully it shouldn’t be much longer until she leaves that death hole she is staying in.’ Fingers crossed. Thank you everyone donating to her food and that of the other galga moms and puppies.

  • Tale of a perrera dog – let it not be in vain

ACTIN logo 170Vivienne Wharton lives in Murcia and is very involved in animal welfare with her two groups. Animal Welfare Support Murcia was her original group, on Facebook. Now through ACTIN she is working on trying to change the attitude of Spanish people towards animal abandonment, mistreatment, neutering, and she has written this article about the perreras – we call them killing stations – where hundreds of dogs are put to sleep every week. Her article was prompted by the unnecessary killing of a pointer – through Facebook he had been found a home, people to donate to his care – he was due to be rescued.

I know you, dear readers, will be very moved by the article. Please show your support for the work ACTIN do by joining and adding your support.

  • Update on Miel/Honey – galga left for dead…

The Spanish volunteers and vets work miracles, that is for sure. And the galgos will fight for life to beat the bastards who would beat them to death. Look here at Honey playing in the garden with friends (she’s in the purple coat). One month ago she couldn’t even move a paw. A miracle indeed! (Sorry, only available on Facebook at the moment – I’ve asked for it to be put on YouTube)

  • CACAM Petition to stop ‘training’ galgos by motorised vehicles – please sign!

Galgos quad bike 256 11 2012You will all be aware that the Andalusian Junta intends going back to the dark ages and legalising ‘training’ galgos from a motorised vehicle. They can be tied to a bike or a car or quad and run by force – if they fall, they are dragged and suffer horrendous body burns, injuries and pain – this from the age of 6 months!!!

The ‘study’ says it’s okay whilst the vehicle does not exceed 15km. Who is going to control this speed? Who is going to police it? Remember, the dogs already are suffering physical and psychological abuse and if this measure is passed, this suffering will be exacerbated. And there are women on this Junta, who you might expect would be more sympathetic. But No!

Portugal Estrella 250 11.11.2012You will be upset to learn that Estrela, the Portuguese galga owned by an alcoholic, is still hanging onto life in horrendous conditions, suffering from pneumonia, but Teresa and Ines are able to feed her the high protein diet paid for by donations, and to feed her surviving puppies. They are still hoping to rescue the galga and save her.
