  • Holidaying in Tenerife? – Podencos dying in Tenerife – what YOU don’t see!

    Tenerife podenca Chugi 150Apanot is an animal refuge in Tenerife where Chugi is staying. With the horror stories coming out of mainland Spain, it is easy to overlook the Spanish islands. I’ve highlighted the sterling work of the SARA association on Lanzarote, now we learn about the plight of the podencos on Tenerife. There are dozens of them, many are females, shut in cages, volunteers struggling to help them, but NO ONE wants to adopt a podenca! And why? They are just as adorable as galgos, and make the most wonderful companions – I can speak from experience!

    Apanot is desperate for adopters to come forward, or sponsors to travel to mainland Europe or Madrid. Please can you help these amazing volunteers who look after these wonderful dogs.

  • Help this abandoned galga – starving on the streets of Seville

    Galga appeal 1 010609Although it is June now, there are still abandoned starving galgos loose on the streets of Spain, abandoned and cast out by the heartless galguerros at the end of January at the end of hunting. We have to all get together and DO something about this. However do the poor volunteers cope?

    This is an appeal via my good friend Charl. Her contact has been notified of a galguita wandering around the town, food is chucked to her, but she is weak and scared. She needs rescuing before she becomes pregnant, but the4 vfolunteer has no room to take her, she is already paying out of her own pocket for veterinary care for others and fees for galgos in a perrera.   • Ibizan hunter battles the system – protect podencos from him

    Podencos loose on IbizaYou may remember back in the autumn of 2008 that the Bright Eyes Society appealed for donations for a fighting fund to pay for the legal costs of bringing a Spanish hunter to court on Ibiza for unbelievable cruelty to his podencos. Read the original report.

  • Bright Eyes appeals for help for the Jaen (Andalucia) Shelter

    The Bright Eyes Society do amazing work for all animals. At the moment they are appealing for funds for the Jaen Shelter in Andalusia. One of my first foster galgos came from that shelter. Please help Bright Eyes. This is there appeal.

  • Leticia – Volunteering to Help Galgos & Podencos in Spain

    Leticia 1 250Leticia is another of the unsung heroes of Spain, giving of her time and her emotions to help the galgos and podencos. Sandra Baas of BaasGalgo interview her.

    ‘Hello everybody. My name is Leticia and I have been working for the last few years as a volunteer to help animal associations, and for the last two as a rescuer of galgos from the street. It all started when I was 14 years old, everything I saw in the street with 4 paws I took home to my parents, who watche me and asked ‘why do you see them all!’

    This is when my concerns about the animal situation in Spain began.

  • Looking for Volunteer Work abroad? Help The Kimba Refuge of Spain

    Kimba Refuge volunteers 250Refuge Kimba functions with the aid of volunteers; 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

    And they would really like people to volunteer to help them, even if you can only give up a week or 2 weeks, they will really appreciate your input an d interest.

    You don’t need anything other than a love of animals and a desire to help them.

  • Galgos Sin Fronteras – Help them save the galgos of the Madrid dog pound

    Galgos Sin Fronteras and their president Cristina Garcia have been working for more than 12 years to help the galgos of Spain.

    For only 20 euros donated to them, they can pay for the cost of the microchip and compulsory vaccination, which helps them save every galgo taken to the Madrid Dog Pound in the past 2 years.

    An amazing result. Please help them.

    Pedro Munoz galgos 1 300Amigos de Los Galgos is urgently appealling for funds, adopters for their dogs, and/or dog food.

    But also medications, bedding, dog coats, or would you purchase one of their beautiful dog collars – every dollar, cent, pound helps.

    This is their appeal! URGENT,the refuges are full. We have need of you!

    If you could help us with a donation – 2..,4..,10 or 20 euros or buy one of our dog collars, or collect bedding, dog food, medication – anything you have, just contact us by email.

    The dogs which are offered for adoption on our website are already in refuges or foster homes, and so we know a little of their characters.

    Some suffered physical abuse, others are marked psychologicaly. They have never known a hygenic environment, or correct feeding.
