  • Galgos del Sol – saving the hounds in Murcia

    GdS puppy w 5 legs 400 7 2020
‘A family underground, a puppy with 5 legs and a mum thats been on the streets for years. A rescue that started Friday midday and finished sunday 1am, everyone exhausted.

A huge thanks again to Maria Jose HM and her husband as always for the relentlessness in catching these dogs, to Kenny who’s here from Scotland and was ready to get his hands dirty and covered in ticks and to Manuel who came and helped late last night as unfortunately I didn’t feel well and had to leave.

Must not forget to thank the on-site GDS team as without their dedication right now we could not take such an overflow of dogs, it’s a lot of hours everyday making sure they are all well and have all they need. It’s a huge amount of team work every time with something like this and we appreciate you all.

Culebra is fully vaccinated and tested negative for Leish, Dirofilaria, Erlichia and Anaplasma.

She has had a life of 7 years of hunger, fear and hardship, who wants to give her at least as many years of warmth, love and friendship?

  • A Dog’s Love

    A Dog's Love 400
It never ceases to amaze me that no matter how much cruelty is meted out on a dog, it will still be loyal to that person! So much abuse of dogs, when their loyalty and love is second to none.

  • Whole Dog Journal – things to consider on fostering a dog

In the 13 years I’ve been involved in the plight of the Spanish galgos and podencos, I’ve fostered several dogs which I’ve brought back with L’Europe des Levriers from Spain for rehoming. Only 3 of them didn’t go on to forever homes elsewhere. Podenca Bebe, galga Carmela and galgo Bracken remained with us. Why? Well, Bebe was my nickname at school and she was rescued by a wonderful young Spanish girl called Marisa – which is my daughter’s name. So you see, I couldn’t let her go! Carmela came as a foster with serious behaviour problems and by the time over 2 years had passed and she had become what I would term a ‘normal’ dog, I could not break her trust by homing her elsewhere. And Bracken? He was already reserved by a couple in the UK and we took him and handed him over ourselves. Sadly a few months later due to unforeseen very serious health problems with the couple, their hounds had to be rehomed. As soon as my husband knew, he hopped in the car and drove back to the UK to bring Bracken home!

Fostering a dog is very rewarding and it helps the shelters insofar as when one dog is fostered, it leaves room for another needy dog to be rescued. Unfortunately at the moment, our household is not suitable for fostering. Bracken and Polar would not tolerate another male dog introduced and Bebe is such a dominant bitch she would not tolerate another female.

So here are some other points to consider about fostering.

  • Galgos happy in their US forever home

    Beth 2 400
Beth Travis has written the story of how she came to be involved with galgos and the ones she adopted.

‘The pics I have attached Pablo (tri-colored) and Cisco (white) and Drogo (brindle).

I have always had 2 dogs so that when I am at work they can keep each other company. When my one dog passed away of old age I was looking for a companion for my other dog. I don’t have children so my dogs have always been the focus of my life to love and spoil. I was talking about it at work when a co-worker said I have a Galgo from Spain and I am fostering a Galgo Whippet mix. My response was “what the heck is a Galgo”. Most people in the US have never heard of a Galgo and as soon as I saw his picture I fell in love with him. I called him Pablo and was told the family that first adopted him returned him because he hid in the closet. My co-worker was trying to get him socialized so he could be adopted to his forever home. He came from out of state from a woman who brought a couple galgos from Spain and was cross breeding them with other breeds of dogs. But it seemed to be more of a puppy mill where they were just kept in cages and not socialized.

  • Galga Amy with Ann’s Canine Care in – leaving Malaga for her forever home

    Ann MP Amy 400 5 2020
Amy’s story, from Ann Marie Payne.

‘This goodbye is really going to hurt. Remember Amy who was living in atrocious conditions during the lockdown. Sue JAy, through a friend, and myself, and with veterinary support managed to get her out of danger and down to Mijas where she was examined and vaccinated by Costapet.

Amy came into my life as an unknown quantity but, immediately found her place in my heart. She is such a beautiful character, kind, so loving and also funny. When we were at Costapet she stole a treat whilst I was paying for her treatment, and brought it home with her. She settled in so easily with Rosely and the very timid little Pearl. But every time I put clean washing on the table Amy decided it was her place to sleep! I put a box on the table to stop her doing this and she decided that was better to sleep in the box than on top of the washing as she could curl up better in it.
