  • Meet the Family 2016

Bebe Polar sleeping 1 400As a change from appeals etc, I thought you might like an update on my Spanish family.  In the photos here you will see my tiny Podenca Andaluz Bebe, now 13 years old, watching Polar sleeping.  Then there’s dark brindle galgo Bracken (a failed foster from Galgos del Sol) who insists on sitting on whoever is on his favourite bed – he’s 7 years old now – in this case lovely Carmela, rescued from a perrera by L’Europe des Levriers.  She also came as a foster but with serious trauma problems.  It took us 2 1/2 years for her to realise that life was good, by which time it was too late to put her up for adoption.  So she’s another failed foster, now 11 years old.

Finally there’s Polar – what can I say?!  3 years old now, adorable, loving, mischievous, very naughty.  And loves empty plastic drinks bottles, as it’s what Jane Brian of Pepis Dog Refuge gives the pups to play with!  He loves sleeping on his back, legs in the air, displaying his huge deep chest for rubbing!  He’s doing very well with his damaged leg, loves to run and play with Bracken and Carmela.

  • Portuguese galga and puppies – rescued just in time

Galga Riti was rescued from the street so heavily pregnant that she gave birth soon after to two gorgeous puppies. Viddy and Viggy will need forever homes when they are old enough, vaccinations, microchips etc.

Lumi is another galgo pup lucky to have been rescued with his galga mom from poor conditions.  You can read the story here and watch the videos of him at play with his sibling.

The only hope of a forever home for these lovelies is outside of Portugal.  Please contact Dogs of Portugal if you can help.

  • Hairy Cuban looking for a family

Cuban 1 7 2016 400I’ve always loved the long-haired galgos we’ve brought out of Spain on rescues, they are not very common.  Here’s a lovely boy waiting and waiting for a forever home.

‘Cuban is a young Galgo.   2 years since we brought him off a hunter because he didn’t want to hunt.  He’s unusual because he has long hair and people are not used to seeing this type of galgo… is that why no one has adopted him? He’s a dog without any kind of fear, sociable, compatible with dogs and cats and walks great on a leash. He will come with chip, vaccinated and neutered.

  • La Bienvenida, Ciudad Real – Stunning Galgo Hairo seeks forever home

La Bienvenida Hairo 2 400My very first galga Karmel was from La Bienvenida refuge in Ciudad Real, 200km south of Madrid.  I travelled down with the team of L’Europe des Levriers to collect her, along with a dozen more.  I wrote about the trip for the Weekly Telegraph and that was also the birth of Galgo News.

This stunning boy is at La Bienvenida now.  He’s Hairo, he was skeletal when rescued but is now looking much better.  Here is his story.

Hairo arrivedon 30th Junhe at the shelter, it’s another waste more of the hunt among many so many. What can we say about him or his state that you can’t see in the video?
Needless to say, he’s too thin, you can see the spine and all the ribs, he looks like a sack of bones.  He was full of ticks and very dirty, has some wounds but they are not serious. He soon had a nice bath and stayed on good and clean. The poor boy very much appreciated the attention and filled us with kisses. In spite of his state, is a young galgo,  very affectionate and happy.  He just wanted to eat and lots of cuddling.

  • Seville – cheap accommodation available in the campo

Rosario galga puppies 2 390Rosario de la Guia tells the story of this rescue – an all too common one about an abandoned galga who gives birth to pups.

Look at what we did to rescue this galga and her pups. In the field in a few bushes hidden. For 3 days carrying food and water 3 times a day. We caught them as  we couldn’t leave them to die of a heat stroke.  We found an urgent foster placing  but we need to welcome them also for adoptions for when they stop suckling.  They are in Seville.  There is an adoption contract and follow up.

  • Once revered by Royalty, thrown away like garbage – the stunning White Galgo

Romeo and Juliet 400 18 7 2016They are Romeo and Juliet, obviously male and female very young. They were found by a wandering disoriented by the highway Jerez (Cadiz) Spain.  Loads of traffic, very dangerous for them.
Between Manuel and Macarena with the help of other cars that were stopped they managed to rescue them.
We believe that they are brothe and sisters, they support the one on the other.
We would like to home the two together, for obvious reasons.  They are very good and quiet.

They are at the clinic, but they won’t be able to stay much longer. so a foster home is urgently needed, or even better, a forever home.  Adopt a galgo, you will regret it.

Contacts.  Macarena Castellano or Lola Bustillo  (but only on their facebook pages as I can’t get an email or phone no for them)

  • A baby, abandoned alone in a Spanish flat – safe now with Scooby

    From Cobie at Scooby Protectora.

Scooby Bombon 400 7 2016They moved and took with them every worthless piece of shit with them, every chair, table, carpet, spoon, bowl, everything until the flat was completely empty.

But the most valuable thing they left behind in that empty hole: this little galga puppy only 10 weeks old who actually should still be with her mother. But they left her all alone without water, without food, no soft blanket to sleep on, just nothing.

Of course she was afraid and felt alone so she started to panic and cried and screamed for days and hoped that somebody heard her and would come back for her to keep her company. Well, finally, after some days, the neighbours called the police, they came and broke the door open and found her, totally stressed and brought her to the perrera municipal in Valladolid where Scooby took her out.

  • Volunteering at Pepis Dog Refuge – a story

    Anpana Alan 400 6 2014
Got some holiday to spare; time at a weekend to run a monthly car boot stall….anything to help Jane and Alan Brian at Pepis.  Here’s a message from a recent volunteer, Holly,.

‘A big shout out to Jane Brian and Alan who run Pepis Refuge in Pedrera for welcoming me into their doggie family as a volunteer for the past two weeks! It was an amazing and eye opening experience 10/10 recommend to anyone who is a dog lover and wanting to do some good in the world. Jane and Alan are an amazing couple who work so hard everyday to care for all of their dogs and struggle against the cruelty that is inflicted on the dogs by the Spanish and their culture. They need SO MUCH help. If you want to volunteer or donate please contact Pepis Refuge, they would appreciate any help you can give!!’

Galgos currently for adoption at Pepis.

  • Galgos 112 – saving the starving from the streets of Jaen, Spain

Galgos 112 1 170 20 6 2016Unbelievable that this poor galgo even has the strength to stand up.  How long can he have gone without food?  But he is now safe with Galgos 112.  Here’s what they say about him.

‘The years go by but we’re still surprising us by the same things. On the one hand the incredible strength of galgos and hounds, that as soon as they are given a chance they cling to life with a mad desire and exceed that which seemed impossible. On the other hand the indifference with which some humans treat others.

The of the pictures is Cuico, a galgo that was several days wandering in that state for the town in Jaen Martos. It’s getting complicated to understand that being in this state no one offer to help him.  Was it not clear that this dog needed help? This indifference to the suffering of others, in Galgos 112 we never get used to it. Never. It’s just that, plain and simple, we don’t want to do it; we don’t want to be indifferent to the pain of others, whoever it is that I’m having a tough time. Had to be Antonio, as always, who saw him and he laid his hand. Because Antonio has the gift of not being able to subtract indifferent to the pain and the abuse, Antonio has that what many brag but not so many times we see: Humanity.
