    Laughter and jeers pursue him
    as starvation no longer responds.
    His failure can’t be tolerated
    in this land
    of pleasure and fun.

  • Zaragoza University, Ohio University, Scooby Medina – working together

Recently Scooby Medina was visited by a dozen vets and veterinary students to help with galgos rescued from perreras throughout Spain, many of the dogs in poor condition and sick. ^ vets and 6 students helped Eric, the refuge vet, together with Dr Guillermo Couto of Ohio University, whose visit was financed by Petcare Affinity Group. They all stayed for a week, working also with Dr Pablo Gomez of Zaragoza University and some of his students.

You can see photos of the visit here. It’s an illustration that it is not just about rescuing dogs, but also about the enormous amount of aftercare involved in rehabilitating the dogs and preparing them for adoption.

  • Nana in Barcelona – receiving the best treatment

Do you remember Nana, the little galgo puppy in the care of Pro-Galgo and being treated for an horrendous case of mange? She then succumbed to distemper, bravely fought on and has now recovered enough to feel happy to play with other hounds. Read her progress report here.

  • L’Europe des Levriers – saving galgos from Jerez and Bullas, Murcia

Bea rescue 250Beatrice Monnet, President of L’Europe des Levriers in France, has been working in galgo and podenco rescue from Spain for about a decade. In 2006 she founded EDL and it has since gone from strength to strength. I have been on many rescues with her and what I saw and learnt provided much information for my book. Here is a video of the dogs rescued in February 2012, some of them you will see are galgos in Jerez perrera which were featured on Galgo News. One poor boy lost his paw, caught in a viscious snare; two of them had filaria (heartworm) but have responded really well to treatment.

Where it says ‘accueil’, that means the dog is in foster and available for adoption. The two white galgos live near me in France, and I will see them next month for my 3rd Dog Walk.

  • Galgo Rey – from Seville to Malaga to…seeking forever home

Rey Charl 2012 250This is the story of galgo Rey (King of kings), abandoned on the streets of Seville starving, thin and weak, he lay down one day and gave up on life; his galguero no longer valued Rey’s life. For at 7+ years he has surely given his best to his master. Bred from, run and hunted, he was probably the prime galgo of the group and caught the most hares. To get to his age is a credit to his survival.

He’s got two disadvantages – he’s all black and he’s male. What is it about black galgos, that people turn away; when their coat recovers in good condition, they are stunning!

  • Madrid – sights to see

Madrid Aroa 2 250 3 2012White galgos were always considered the ultimate by the Spanish aristocracy, and here are two beauties in Madrid, needing forever homes. Kendra is stunning with her different coloured eyes, and little Aroa was found alone on the street! Here are their stories.

AROA – the police took Aroa and her little brother Arati off the street in a village near Madrid where they had been wandering for several days, looking for food. She is in foster, good in the house, with children, with other dogs and cats and, being only 5 months old, playful.

  • Holidaying in Seville? Accommodation available soon!

Seville hunter 1 250 Macu 3 2012Macu lives in Seville and has been working to save podencos from a gypsy. Now she has received a call about a hunter with galgos, podencos and mix breeds, kept in a shack in cages, existing on bread. He was going to take them to a perrera which doesn’t charge to kill the dogs. She has managed to get 3 of the 10 galgos, and is asking for help to get the other 7. It’s horrendous this year, everyone is full to overflowing – bloody hunters.

If anyone can help, both with fostering the dogs or paying for kenneling and vet fees, please contact Macu (Paypal to this address) Tele (Spain) 665809169
