  • From Galgos 112 – a message to the Spanish Galgueros & Politicians

    3 galgos Travis Patenaude 400
A message for Galgueros and Politicians from Galgos 112 after betraying the Spanish hunting dogs that they are not protected by the new law.

Look into their eyes, especially you inept politicians who have left them lying around and abandoned like cigarette butts.
To the Galgueros we tell them not to even approach them, to ask these soulless sub-human beings to look into the eyes of the dogs that they mistreat so much and would cause yet more pain to the poor dogs by their abandonment.

  • New Animal Welfare Law in Valencia Region

This is a precis of an article which appeared in my online copy of The Olive Press.

The Valencian parliament has approved a new regional animal welfare law which is tougher than recently-passed national legislation.

Penalties of up to 45,000 euros for very serious cases of animal cruelty

Breeding and sale of pets restricted to authorised professionals.

Also includes hunting dogs who inthis instance are classified as pets.

Valencian agriculture minister Isaura Navarro – guarantees the rights of animals.

Classifies animals as ‘sentient beings’ and not just pets.

Adoption prioritise. Registration and identifiation of animals required – owners have 6 months to register them.

  • Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert – adopting doesn’t make you a better person

    FBM Adopting a dog 400 2 2023
    From Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert

Adopting doesn’t make you a better person.

This is one of those posts that is likely to create controversy. And they may rain criticism on us, we know it. But it is absolutely necessary.

The last few weeks have been especially difficult. In addition to ending the hunting season and receiving dogs and more dogs daily, the situation is complicating for a reason that creates sadness, and anger at the same time: the abandonment of dogs that had already been previously adopted.

You can’t imagine the number of calls, emails, comments and messages on networks that often come to us like this “My personal situation has changed, and I can no longer have dogs… He has an illness and we can’t assume the costs… “We moved and our landlord, doesn’t accept pets.. “We’ve had a kid and the dogs all of a sudden are behaving strangely… Can you please take care of the dogs? “

  • The dangers of dog walking too many dogs at one time – how many is too many?

    Beryl 5 dogs 400
In the UK, with more people adopting dogs during lockdown, the number of dog walkers has increased. This ‘profession’ is totally unregulated, anyone can set up as a dog walker which can have disastrous results, as happened last week (Jan 2023) in Caterham, Surrey, where a dog walker was walking 8 dogs at the same time.

Reports state that the 8 dogs included 2 daschund, a cockapoo (mongrel by any other name!) collie and a Leonberger, none of the breeds on the Dangerous Dogs list. What a contrast between the dogs, and most of them were from different households. Personally, I fail to see how one person can walk 8 dogs of such a diverse range in size and temperament. Add to this, the woman was walking them on a public common, rather than in an enclosed area or on a private field.

  • Protectora Scooby Newsletter 3 – laws and laws! Not for hunting dogs

    From Fermin Perez.

    Hunting Season In Full Swing

The hunting season began in earnest in the autumn and this brings with it more animal abuse, deaths, neglect and exploitation of dogs who are later rejected. The poor souls are either surrendered directly to Scooby or dumped in the countryside straying and fending for themselves, running the risk of starvation and injury in a road traffic accident. Some hunters, in various locations near to each other, corral their dogs and ask us to take them. The calls from local villagers about loose dogs have already started. We drive to pick them up, bring them to our clinic and kennels where they are vaccinated, castrated, and treated for injury and illness. We keep them safe until we can home them in Spain or via our international support groups.

The weather so far has been very wet and this has made hunting difficult. It remains to be seen how the season continues, whether or not it is impeded by soggy winter weather, and how many dogs are discarded into the Spanish shelters.

  • Dogs – nail trimming

Like our own nails, our dog’s claws also grow. We’re always nervous about taking too much off but our dogs don’t go to the vet often enough to ask them to do it – at a cost! Rosie gets walk enough that her claws are worn down naturally but Bo – being blind – doesn’t like walking on tarmac and concrete so he needs his claws clipping.

Here’s an article on the subject.
