Leishmania in dogs
Many of the Spanish rescue hounds test positive for Leishmania, a disease caused by the Sandfly. Sadly it puts some people off adopting, and yet with an inexpensive regular dose of medication, the dogs go on to lead happy normal lives.
Here’s a link to an article about Leishmania which I published a couple of years ago.

Traktive – finding your dog if it gets lost
A story recently published tells of a podenco on a beach with its owner in Northern France. Some fireworks were let off and the podenco ran into the sea and swam off. It was wearing one of these trackers. The owner says the GPS signal was lost for about an hour, then reappeared to report that the dog had swum out to an island and was on rocks waiting to be rescued! She got a local boat owner to take her out to the Island to rescue her dog.
So here’s a link to Traktive, the tracker this lady used. I shall be purchasing one for my podenca Rosie for when we go out on riverbank and beach walks, as she’s still so nervous she’d probably run off if there were any loud bangs.

Galgo Verdini needs a foster or adoptive home
Dogs can suffer from health problems like humans, and one of them is epilepsy. Here’s a plea from Puntanimals for help for galgo Verdini.‘VERDINI NEEDS HELP – We need your HELP this time in the form of FOSTER HOUSE FOR VERDiNi. VERDiNi has been diagnosed as epileptic. He has started medication, but to get his seizures under control, he NEEDS CALM and follow a routine that avoids stressful situations. Tricky thing to get in the shelter.
The TREATMENT is very SIMPLE, we don’t need any expert, it consists of one tablet every 12 hours and a little more. But it’s very important to keep him under control and calm so that his situation starts to normalize.
Please IT IS VERY important, we are afraid that he will suffer an irreversible attack for not following such simple guidelines.
VerdiNi deserves help, he’s a 7-year-old ggalgo, calm and very good.
If you can offer a little space in your home to VERDiNi contact (Spain 0034) 610528802 and we’ll give you all the information.

Advice – Canine Brucellosis
From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.
‘Canine Brucellosis, this is relevant to anyone in the UK that has adopted a dog from overseas .. please read
There have been a number of reports of some veterinary Clinics in the UK that any one that has brought a dog into the UK from overseas. They are now insisting it is tested for Brucellosis before they are willing to treat it .. I have attached a link below from an article from the British Veterinary Association recommending protocols ti be put in place ..
This will also include breeders importing dogs and possibly people who travel overseas with their dogs..
My concern is your dog needs emergency treatment and it is delayed until the blood results are back, it may be too late.
Asking some of our adopters it seems that the private practices are not making this request but the bigger practices that are owned by companies are doing so. Even dogs that have been in the UK for a number of years with no symptoms.
