After Brexit March 2019 – potential big changes for pets and overseas travel
From Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends.‘Potentially big changes for taking your pets overseas from the UK after March 2019… It could resort back to the old system where titre counts for Rabies are required and 4 months waiting before they can travel and to complete a number of documents to travel. We had to do this back in 2001 when we first moved to Spain with our dogs. This will also impact on rescue dogs though in this article there is no mention of them but I imagine they will have to comply with the same rules to travel from Europe to the UK.’

Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert, Seville – Paloma adopted in Italy
If you are considering adopting a galgo, and wonder if they can live with cats, then have a look at this lovely video of Paloma, adopted in Italy from the Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert shelter. My first greyhound, a stray, lived happily with my cats but none of my Spanish galgos have, their hunting instinct has been too strong. So it’s essential that a galgo is properly cat tested before adoption. -

Update on Carmela after suffering a stroke
Last week I mentioned we had to return home early from holiday with my family in the UK, as our lovely house/animal sitter and a friend with kennels in the village had to rush my galga Carmela to the vet, after she collapsed at home. Carmela was kept in the vet clinic over the weekend and the following Monday, 10/09, we collected her and took her to the La Rochelle vet hospital for a brain scan. She was diagnosed as having suffered a stroke. The following day we attended our own vet again, where Carmela was found to have lost 5kg in weight, sadly looking like one of the starving abandoned dogs of Spain, rather than a very much loved rescued galga of 13 years old. She was put on Oromedrol 16mg once a day and Candilat once a day; the latter was medication which had been prescribed by our vet for our old French lurcher.

Slowing down the speed eater
I’ve just returned early from holiday as I received an emergency call for one of my dogs. My galga Carmela collapsed and my lovely animal sitter and another friend rushed her to the vet. She was unable to stand so suspected concussion, possibly from banging her head. We took her to the vet hospital in La Rochelle where she had a scan and the diagnosis was a bump on the head and possible stroke. She is now home, having lost 5 kg in weight, drinking normally and eating small amounts of food. She is on medication for her eyesight – her head is on one side – and also on tablets for her head (the same tablets as we had for our old lurcher to stem the onset of alzheimers. -
How to brush your dog’s teeth
I have lived with dogs all my life and can’t remember us ever brushing their teeth. We’ve tended to give them bones and chews to do the job. Having said that, my little podenca Bebe came as a 6 year old with her teeth in a terrible state – from bad nutrition as a puppy according to my vet. But apart from having the 4 lower front teeth removed, the rest haven’t caused problems and she is now 15 years old.
Here’s a slide show of how to clean your dog’s teeth.

Galgos run free in the dunes and woods
Thought you would enjoy this video of a couple of galgos on a trip to exercise in the dunes and woods. Would that all galgos could enjoy such freedome.
