  • Charity funding and donating – ACTIN suggests

I wish some person in the public domain would create an Animal Aid event. We have Children in Need, Comic Relief (£41 million raised last week and for me there was too much promotion funding projects in Africa (with their corrupt regimes) and not enough on entertainment for the people being asked to donate) and Sports Relief – all in the UK.

In a previous life I worked for the BBC including Children in Need in our area and the interest generated on the money they raised was also phenominal.

Viv Wharton of ACTIN says – What we could do if people changed their attitudes towards charity funding? This video is really good and especially interesting if you have come across people being negative towards fund giving, or discrimination against charities….

  • Good News from Italy

News from Italy kindly sent to me by Daisy, who translated From Heaven to Hell into Italian.

    ‘Good news from Italy!

After the shock of the news that, in order to lighten the massive amount of work for the Italian magistrates, some crimes (animal mistreatments included!!!) would have been considered as “less severe” -meaning no prison for animal torturers- thousands of people showed their disgust. The President of the Italian Government, Mr. Matteo Renzi replied that animal lovers shouldn’t be worried because these directions are not law yet and they will be modified. He also said that the Government always listen to everyone.

    We really hope so!’

What is involved in rescuing a dog in Spain. Scooby explains. Covering all these costs is one of the reasons rescue associations ask for an adoption fee.

  • Chemical Castration, natural treatment for mange, earcropping

Danielle Hart, who very kindly translated my galgo book into French and is now working on doing the same with my Podenco book, has send me the following two articles which she wanted to share with everyone. Especially she wondered if the shelters and refuges might consider chemical castration as an alternative to an operation, cheaper and less stressful for the dogs.

  • Lost galgos – educate the rehomers and adoptants

It always distresses me to read about galgos sent to other countries for homing, who then escape and are lost! At any one time, there are several lost in France alone. And in the last 2 weeks there has been one lost in the US and one in Canada. Luckily both were eventually caught a few days later, without injury, but the stories could have been very different.

Over the years none of my own galgos have escaped, none of my foster galgos or podencos, none of the galgos and podencos who have stayed here overnight.

  • Rescue dogs from Europe – to rehome in the UK or not?

A week or so ago, I posted about the problems a friend was having trying to adopt a little black galga from Scooby, and was refused. President of Scooby Fermin Perez Martin replied, explaining that because there are so many English and Irish greyhounds needing forever homes in the UK, Scooby does not send galgos there. I concur with his view, although I feel that when an exceptional home is offered to a ‘hard-to-place’ dog, an exception should have been made.

  • Leech Therapy – old fashioned remedies could be best

Leeches-in-modern-medicine-1I am a great believer in natural remedies, after all, it’s all that was available before the discovery of penicillin, pain killers and antibiotics etc. Tunde, currently living in Germany, has sent this interesting piece about the use of leech therapy. A lot of food for thought.

‘My galga Guzu has arthrosis. Willow bark helps her a lot but it is not enough. When the weather is bad (cool and wet) then she is in pain. I got some chemicals, painkiller to be exact, but I am not happy with this (I am afraid of side effects).

Several German sighthound forum members suggested I go to leech therapy with her.
Obviously in many cases the leeches help greatly when the dog (or the
person) has arthrosis. I know of some dogs that did not need ANY painkillers whatsoever after a leech therapy.

  • Portable dog enclosures – suggestions

Frank dog fencing show 250You may remember a couple of weeks ago I asked for ideas about portable dog enclosures. I’ve had a couple of helpful suggestions which I thought I’d share with you.

Frank organises an annual greyhound get-together in May and he sent photos of what he uses. Obviously the fencing isn’t high enough to stop a galgo jumping over to chase any hare/rabbit stupid enough to appear in the field! But useful for keeping the dogs tethered in their own space. Instead of the metal poles, I suggested the white plastic electric fencing poles like I use for my horses.

Kate thought the panels I found looked great; she suggested an idea for pegs.
