Especially she wondered if the shelters and refuges might consider chemical castration as an alternative to an operation, cheaper and less stressful for the dogs.

Have you ever heard of Zeuterin? It’s an injection that is given in a dog’s testicles and neuters him completely without expensive surgery! Here is the link to the maker’s Website.

Natural treatment for Mange
Dr Peter Dobias is a Canadian holistic vet. His products are wonderful and his Website is full of great advice (http://peterdobias.com/ ). He even has a page on Demodex mange and the natural way to treat it. http://peterdobias.com/blogs/blog/15622612-demodex-mange-in-dogs-natural-treatment-and-diet. I use his Livton product on Téo and my vet was astounded at his last blood test. His liver values had decreased by half! Everything he sells is natural and organic.
Ear cropping is not something I (Beryl) had come across until we moved to France 14 years ago. The young couple in the house down the lane got a Great Dane pup. One day I saw it with a white lacey head covering and asked about it. I was told she had her ears cropped and wires inserted to make them stand up, so she looked fierce. I was horrified and appalled! So please vote at the end of this article.

Ear cropping has been banned in Europe for many years now and is illegal!
Some still do it in France and some Eastern European countries. If it is seen, report it. Better still befriend the people and see which vet has done, then report the vet.
Putting metal frames into the ears of a Gt Dane pup is a very old fashioned, painful and dangerous way of cropping. In the US now they do it differently and with soft tapes. No better but just a little less painful. In the US, CA we are now in a situation that it is difficult to get a Gt Dane placed in the showring if he is not cropped.
In UK Cruft has now totally banned cropped ears in the showring.
