  • Protectora Scooby Newsletter 5 – the WeWard app and Education

    The WeWard app is good news for walkers, dog owners & Scooby alike. Link the app to the pedometer on your phone and when you walk your dog (or even without the dog), you clock up points and can convert them into cash donations
    for Scooby. Available in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian, it can be downloaded from the AppStore and Google Play. Apparently dog owners walk 1,600 kilometres every year, so with 1£$€ per 100 points, all the dog owners reading this could boost Scooby’s funds just by walking the dog.

    Education Project : A Wet Nose In Your Life

    This year we launched our education project, “A Wet Nose In Your Life” (“Un Hocico En Tu Vida”) which is directed at schools, youth groups and parent associations. This important venture teaches young people, their parents and guardians about the importance of properly relating to our dogs and understanding how they “talk” to us. This is fundamental to the prevention of bites. Our trainer, Pablo, is keen to talk to all education authorities and youth services about running the programme in their
    organisations. He goes along to the class or session and gives an interactive, informative, compassionate talk to the group. In his experience the students are participative and ask a lot of questions. They also enthusiastically tell anecdotes about their own pets. We are always grateful to the teaching staff for warmly welcoming the topic and leading by example with a strong
    interest. Almost every participant gains something from the event and has better information about understanding the signals dogs send us.

    Gift A Virtual Adoption

    Our Virtual Adoption Programme is a good way of supporting some of the needy animals in the Scooby shelter. You can choose for yourself or as a gift for family and friends for 10€ per month or 115€ per year. We will send the virtual adopter a certificate, a photo of the chosen animal and updates twice per year. There are lots of animals to choose from,
    including:

    Granny – an oldie;
    Donja – has only one ear
    Zuki – had gangrene before arriving at the
    shelter and lost both of her back paws;
    Paris – the gentle giant and an old faithful
    Alba the albino horse is there with Plus y
    Ultra, the goats, alongside Cayenne y
    Pepper, the donkeys. All overseen by
    Blackie the head of the cats in our cattery!

  • Protectora Scooby Newsletter 4 – Kennel Renovations – we need funds and builders

    From Fermin Perez.

    Kennel Renovations

    You may recall from our autumn bulletin we appealed for financial help towards kennel repairs. We have not been able to do the work because we failed to raise the funds. In addition there is a lack of available, skilled bricklayers in our area. It is pretty much impossible to find labour to do the job and within a reasonable estimate (€5k).

    Our appeal remains and if you are able to donate towards it, we’d be very grateful. We’d love to complete the renovations in the spring when it is less rainy. We desperately need to repair brickwork, smooth the floor area to make cleaning easier
    and safer.

    And now a rehoming story – not a galgo but an example of the work Scooby does.

  • Protectora Scooby Newsletter 3 – laws and laws! Not for hunting dogs

    From Fermin Perez.

    Hunting Season In Full Swing

    The hunting season began in earnest in the autumn and this brings with it more animal abuse, deaths, neglect and exploitation of dogs who are later rejected. The poor souls are either surrendered directly to Scooby or dumped in the countryside straying and fending for themselves, running the risk of starvation and injury in a road traffic accident. Some hunters, in various locations near to each other, corral their dogs and ask us to take them. The calls from local villagers about loose dogs have already started. We drive to pick them up, bring them to our clinic and kennels where they are vaccinated, castrated, and treated for injury and illness. We keep them safe until we can home them in Spain or via our international support groups.

    The weather so far has been very wet and this has made hunting difficult. It remains to be seen how the season continues, whether or not it is impeded by soggy winter weather, and how many dogs are discarded into the Spanish shelters.

  • Protectora Scooby Newsletter 2 – Welfare and Tired Computers

    From Fermin Perez.

    We are always pushing for welfare developments for animals living in Spain. Unexpectedly we acquired a new dimension to this area of our work. The Spanish government proposed an update to our animal welfare legislation. It was so ground-breaking, it seemed too good to be true. We realised it was when the Government acquiesced to demands from the Spanish hunting community and agreed to exclude hunting dogs. Given the thousands of hunting dogs exploited, abused and dumped in Spain every year, this is an amendment to the proposed legislative update Spanish rescues and animal advocates are unwilling to take lying down. We have been part of an active campaign calling on the Government to withdraw the amendment. It centres on the fact a dog is a dog and all breeds should be equal in the eyes of the law : “#MismosPerrosMismaLey”. We write more about this issue later in the newsletter but sadly it looks as if the Government is unwilling to take the necessary steps to protect hunting dogs.

  • Puntanimals – hard work in the rain

    Puntanimals rainy days 400 12 2022
    It has rained a lot in Spain recently, topping up the reservoirs but no fun with a shelter full of dogs!

    ‘Rainy days are really hard in the shelter as they can’t go out to the yard to relate and play with the rest, they are a little more stressed by the limitations and although all of these are sheltered and have a roof and it’s ok but the sun has not risen.

    We put blankets and vests on them daily, if they get wet we wipe them off with towels, but no matter how much we want to, it can’t compare to the care and care of a home.

    Rainy days are also hard because of all the furry ones on the street, with no place to shelter and we unfortunately are always saturated with dogs because neglect is unbearable.
