  • Pepis Dog Refuge – can you volunteer to help with the hounds?

And another appeal on behalf of Jane and Alan Brian at Pepis.  If you are planning summer holidays, why not take a week and volunteer at the refuge.

    COULD YOU HELP?

The main thing Jane and Alan need, almost as much as financial help, is volunteers. There is so much work still needs to be done at the refuge but while the dogs need taking care of day in day out, there just aren’t enough hours in the day to do anything else. The Rio Seco hotel in Pedrera is €20 per night for a single room and €40 for a double. Alan will collect you from the hotel and drop you home in the afternoon. Jane will provide you with lunch. As someone who has taken dogs from the refuge, another problem is the dogs just don’t have enough time spent with them. Sadly at the moment this is unavoidable when Jane and Alan have 70+ dogs to clean out and feed each day between just the two of them. Just helping for a few days can make all the difference and I can assure you you won’t regret it. Jane and Alan are incredibly welcoming and each and every dog there loves the company of humans.❤ Please please please, if you are in a position to help, please consider it. • A tale of a galga and puppies…O.D.A. to the rescue

    Galga in pig sty 250 3 1 2016(Google translation)  The association O.D.A.

‘We are still in shock. We don’t even know how to begin to count all this. We’re sick of seeing and rescue dogs and cats in terrible conditions, but we’ve never encountered anything like this. Yesterday we received a call from a great girl that alerting us of a case that I had just met. A galga had given birth a month ago and was living in a pigsty with pigs and chickens. The pigs had eaten the galgo puppies, leaving only two of them alive. When we hear that, we couldn’t believe. We even came to think that it wasn’t true.

  • Protesting against killing – sometimes we CAN make a difference

Scooby fugitive galgos 250 12 2015A moving story of canine family love from Cobie at Scooby Residencia Valladolid.

‘This article appeared last week (12 2015) in the Spanish newspaper El Mundo and it´s about the 2 abandoned galgos from Langa (Avila) for which the mayor of that village gave permission to shoot them. It´s beautiful written and very emotional, to translate it is very hard because it´s very big. But in short it comes to this:

The black and white galga you see in this picture which was taken the 25th of November 2012, is already roaming around for 3 years. After one and a half years she got company from an also abandoned male. People in that village know who they belonged to but they didn´t like to talk about that. Together they are like Bonny and Clyde because in the night they come down from the mountain where they live, to catch a chicken, not because they are agressive, no, just to survive and aparently the people there like more their chickens than abandoned galgos so they have chased them many times away or even gone up on `their` mountain to try to kill the galgos.

  • Beating the bastard galgueros again! Hank & Declan – ones they left to die in agon

The story of a brave galgo with Galgos del Sol by president Tina Solera.

‘Hank was once left to die a slow death, paralysed on the streets with no means to survive. We fought for him and decided to operate on his neck. Many people including vets from abroad insisted he would never walk again judging by the MRI scans and the chances we were taking were simply cruel.

Some of you wrote to me and said I was an animal abuser. Most of you said lets rock this and believed in GDS and Hank! Hank says well here I am a lean mean running machine, the quickest kid off the blocks, the galgo with the biggest gob, the galgo with the biggest heart, the most nimble and the most playful out of all of them.

Not only did he walk again he became a superstar! We believed in him every small step of the way. Check out Hanks story here… ‘

  • Christmas for a galgo

Seville perrera galgo 250 4 12 2015Yet another heartless bastard galguero…this poor galgo being dragged by its owner in Seville perrera, peeing on the floor the entire way, so scared. What did you do to displease your owner poor Galgo? Maybe you did nothing wrong but there is just no room for you anymore. You are innocent, you are loyal but it does not matter.

While we rightfully focus on the horrid cases of abuse and abandonment that fill the pages on the internet and their rescue, especially at this time of year, sadly the stark reality is that the vast, vast majority of Galgos and Podencos find this as their final fate. If they are not taken care of by the hand of their owner they will be dropped off, or in this case dragged, in to a perrera where most will find the needle as the final reward for their innocence.

The tip of the iceberg that we all see is tragically overwhelmed by the realities of the part underneath the surface.
