  • Galgo Podenco Platform – what they do

    Galgo Podenco Lobby
Many years ago the Dutch Galgo Lobby worked to publicise the plight of the galgos and podencos in Spain. The Galgo Podenco Platform is now doing the same. Here’s an extract from their website.

    ‘Galgo Podenco Platform

The galgolobby is a developed lobby in Europe, where these dogs are much exploited for their specific characteristics as sight hounds, including their speed and hunting abilities. Galgos are traditionally used for hare coursing on the countryside and sometimes on enclosed tracks.

A very important development is that the galgo-lobby also represents the podenco: The Great Forgotten. Podencos are mostly used and abused in the Rehalas and Monterias: the driven hunt. The number of podencos greatly exceeds the number of galgos in Spain. These dogs live mostly hidden in dark and filthy barns on one meter chains.’

You can read more about their work on this link.

  • Giving rescue dogs a chance

Not about galgos or Spanish hounds but I thought you might be interested to read this story of a young woman in Romania (where we know the dogs also suffer horrendous cruelty) and her work saving the street dogs.

  • Living with a blind dog

I’ve written this article on my Podenco Post blog but I want to share it with you because the situation with our podenco could just as easily be written about a galgo.

    Bo face 1 400
Bo (Bocelli) is a blind podenco we recently adopted from life on a chain in Lorca, Spain. Having both had dogs for all our seven decades of life, we have never had a blind dog. So it is a new experience for us. He has now been with us for a couple of months and is settling in very well. He can now find his way out of the kitchen into the garden to the toilet, and back again. Luckily we have a ramp at our back door rather than steps, which is much easier for him. He hasn’t so far ventured into the rest of the bungalow but no doubt he will do it one day, in his own time.

He shares his home with Rosely, a sighted podenca, and very often shares his bed with her. She wears a bell on her collar so he always knows where she is. He is at the stage of wanting to play with her in the garden, but after 6 years shut in a shed breeding babies, Rosely doesn’t know how to play. Her main interest is her stuffed toys, baby substitutes I suspect.

    Yo Galgo carlota galgos 400 5 2021
    1 Podcast – Saving galgos with Carlota112

Today we launch the first episode of our podcast.

In this conversation, I talk with Carlota from 112CarlotaGalgos, a shelter in Malaga, Spain, full of love, understanding, and friends. This content is free, but you will have to subscribe to https://www.moonleaks.org/podcast-1/ to listen to it, that is the best way to protect the opinions of those working within activist groups as social media can be really hard to those that dare to talk. Thanks, Carlota, and thanks to all of you who sent questions too, I hope we could answer some of them.

  • Asociacion Equipo Rescata Animal – saving hounds in Spain

    Yo Galgo Susana ERA 400 12 2020
    From Yo Galgo.

‘This is Susana, a warrior and a friend, a volunteer rescuer at Asociación Equipo Rescate Animal – ERA that works tirelessly to rescue animals in need. ERA mostly rescues galgos (because so many are abandoned in the countryside), but will rescue any animal in need.

Her help has been invaluable for making Yo Galgo, our film. I went with her on many of her rescues throughout the years. Many times we would wait endless hours, without even seeing the dog. Rescuing is not easy, and requires a lot of preparation trying to gain the trust of the dog. Joining the rescues has made me understand the true effort of what they do. At ERA all rescuers are volunteers, and believe me they get where no one goes, and as many times as it is needed. Last year they rescued around 400 animals, most of them galgos. Please get to know them at @Asociación Equipo Rescate Animal – ERA and watch our film where you can also meet Susana and watch the rescue of this galgo.’

  • Galgo’s Rescue Almeria – Galgo Gitano needs your help

    GRA Gitano face 400 11 2020
From Sandy at Galgo’s Rescue Almeria

‘This is Gitano, two weeks ago he came in our care. He is only 3 years old but unfortunately he is Leish positive.
To know his exact values we had to do a full laboratory test. He was very skinny when he arrived and it seems he’s not gaining any weight. We received the results and they are not good at all, his kidneys values are very bad.

Gitano is taking medication and we need to buy special kidney diet dry and wet food.

We are not giving him up and will do everything what’s possible to save him.

Please keep Gitano in your thoughts. All help to cover his medical costs and special food is welcome and we would be extremely grateful.’

  • Ann’s Canine Care – how it all began

Ann Marie Payne the beginning 400
How it all began, rescuing galgos

In 2014 I was a foster for a well known local rescue, who had been asked if we could get 3 galgos out of the pound for a UK rescue.

I’d never looked after a galgo before so I did a post asking for fosters. Two ladies stepped up so I offered to foster the 3rd, with one of the ladies being back up for me as I had a house full of little fosters.

Poor Charlie though couldn’t go. Her leg had to heal before her spay so her transport was put on hold. Charlie was finally ready to go, transport booked, and adoption completed for the Thursday. On the Sunday before I had a phone call to say that the adopter had accepted a full time job and didn’t like to say. Well the adoption was cancelled because the rescue didn’t want her left home alone all day, and with no provision for her to be taken out. I was asked if I would like to adopt Charlie and, immediately said yes. She went to the protests in Malaga and was as good as gold. She was also great with the little fosters, and mothered them.
