  • Galgos del Sol 2021

Back in September 2010 I was contacted by Tina Solera, a volunteer with Los Infiernos shelter in Torre Pacheco, Murcia. There was an injured galgo and she asked if I could help her with him by posting an appeal on my Galgo News, which I created in 2007. A while later she took on he renovation of a few kennels owned by a friend of hers, and I sponsored one of them in my late Mother’s name. Tina has come a long way from there, still working hard saving podencos and galgos.

    From Tina.

  • Candy Cane Rescue International

    Candy Cane Xmas box 400 11 2023
Candy’s Hound Rescue International is a rescue that was set up 6 years ago to help Greyhounds from the dog meat trade in China.

Our founder Kerry, who runs a UK based Greyhound rescue, (Greyhound Protection UK) was made aware of ex Racing greyhounds being exported to mainland China 🇨🇳 for breeding. A whole can of worms was then opened.

After being laughed at and dismissed about the fact Greyhounds were in the dog meat trade, Kerry did in fact find many many Greyhounds and sighthounds in the dog meat trade. Many were from Ireland and England.

After then reaching out to Doe Doe, a Chinese lady working to help the dogs, a friendship was built.
First, Kerry started taking hounds under the UK rescue, but when a whippet cross named Candy was due to travel to the UK was killed in kennels the night before her flight, Kerry decided she wanted to do more.

  • Sir Roger Moore on hunters and hunting

Totally agree with this quote from Sir Roger Moore – 7 times playing 007 James Bond.

‘Sir Roger Moore, seventime James Bond: “Hunting is a sickness, a perversion and a danger and should be recognised as such. People who get their amusement from hunting and killing defenceless animals can only be suffering from a mental disorder. It´s detestable that anyone would choose to get thrills from killing others who ask for nothing from life but the chance to remain alive”.

    El Refugio fundraiser 400 8 2023
El Refugio de Leo is a non-profit association registered in the Registry of Associations of the Junta de Andalucía. Most of the people who care for it are volunteers who dedicate their time and effort to help and care for abandoned and mistreated animals in the Axarquia.

The animals we have stay with us until they find a home.

Our Mission is to welcome them, give them shelter and basic care such as food and hygiene, veterinary care, affection and prepare them for a second chance.

Leo’s Refuge survives thanks to membership fees, donations, sponsors and events organized by our volunteers.

We invite you to browse our website, get to know us and our animals and help us in any way you can.

El Refugio de Leo are now running a fundraiser. Here’s what they say about it.

  • Puntanimals Shelter, Umbria, Huelva – dozens of galgos needing forever homes

    Puntanimals Esperanza 400 8 2023
This is the story of Puntanimals Shelter in Umbria, yet another area bad for hunting dogs. (This stunner is Esperanza)

Puntanimals is a non-profit association created to help abandoned and mistreated animals. The idea was born from the hands of a fighter, animal lover who wanted his dream of helping those most in need to come true. We are located in the town of Punta Umbría (Huelva). Since before having the shelter, we already collected the animals that we found and we looked for a home where they were safe and had their needs covered. Officially we have been operating since 2011, it was when we decided to rent a place to be able to protect all the animals while we look for a definitive and responsible adoption for them.

  • Galgo Rescue International Network – the story

    Galgps 112 400 1 2023
The story of Galgo Rescue International Network by Abby who founded the Association in 2006.

I adopted my first ex-racing greyhound in the United States in 1997. I was unaware of the situation with the Spanish galgos until a friend introduced me to their plight in the early 2000s. By that time I had several retired racers and was involved in greyhound rescue, but there was something about the galgos and the extreme nature of their struggle that motivated me to become involved. I began working to gather medical and practical supplies to take to Scooby for my first trip in October 2005. I am a veterinary emergency and critical care nurse, and engaged three of my coworkers to join me in my first trip to Scooby.

  • From a volunteer in a shelter to running a shelter

Back in 2007 when I first travelled to Spain with L’Europe des Levriers to bring rescued galgos and podencos back to our French home for foster and adoption, Galgo News was started. One of the first people to contact me for help in publicising galgos in shelters was Tina Solera, then a volunteer who discovered an injured galgo needing help. It’s been interesting to follow the work of Tina since then with her association Galgos del Sol, to the shelter she now presides over. See the video on this weblink.
