  • Update on galgo Arkos – not good news

    Arkos leg 2 400
Well, it’s been a day of surprises…. and not really very good ones at that! As you all know Arkos went in for what we thought was his surgery on his damaged hock. But, before going ahead, the Specialist decided he needed his own, more definitive X-rays of the the whole leg and… low and behold…a further, even older serious injury was discovered. So, in addition to the injury to the hock, this poor long suffering dog has also suffered a cruciate ligament injury (we don’t know when). This really needs to be done before the fractured Calcaneus procedure can be performed.

So, following X-rays and tests today, Arkos will have the Cruciate Ligament surgery tomorrow and the op originally planned for today will be performed when the Cruciate Ligament procedure has had time to heal, in about 6 weeks time!

Obviously, this is bad news in every way, but we feel that Arkos has suffered all his life and he deserves every chance to experience life as it SHOULD be for a loved Galgo, so we have made the decision to go ahead and use the money that has already been so kindly donated by many of you. We sincerely hope that everyone who donated won’t mind?

  • Introducing Henry.

    Chris Luca 4 400
    Henry and Chris’s story:

As an eighteen-year-old in the 1980s, Phoenix, Arizona, I remembered hearing stories of dead greyhounds being found in the desert with bullets through their skulls. This was horrifying. Back then I made a commitment to adopt a greyhound one day. That day came many years later but I did it and Henry brightened up my life. He was an eighty-five-pound brindle and white furred creature. His skull was misshapen and this caused his eyes to be pulled back a bit as if he has “had work done!” He was adorable.

I adopted Del Sol Henry in 2018. His adoption catapulted me into this amazing and unique greyhound cult that I never knew existed! Henry and I attended nail trimming parties, and give your dog a bath events! There are dress your dogs like a pirate parties and dog park socials! There were beautiful collars for sale and matching leashes, t-shirts, necklaces, calendars!! I loved being a part of the greyhound community.

  • Should you soak dry dog food?

I have lived with dogs all my life – when I was born our family dog was already 1 year old! As far as I can remember, we have always put a small amount of gravy or stock on our dogs’ meals. My elderly galga Carmela now has problems crunching large croquettes so she is on the ones for small dogs which she manages no problem. However, I must admit I am not keen on the idea of soaking croquettes for hours.

Here’s another interesting article from the Whole Dog Journal on the subject.

  • Scooby to the rescue of galgos again!

Scooby galga thrown from van 400 4 2019
From Cobie at Scooby Residencia Valladolit. THROWN FROM A VAN!

After falling from the vehicle the poor creature was hit by another car.

This happened in Salamanca, and we have no words to describe how angry such abhorrent cruelty makes us feel. We wonder what kind of ruthless people-people lacking any compassion-we are surrounded by.

Fortunately some residents saw what happened and notified the police. They picked up the galga, who-besides being absolutely terrified-only sustained some blows to her body and various bruises in an incident that could’ve resulted in more serious injuries. They were able to catch and take her to a vet and she miraculously survived with only a nasty fright.

She is ok, stable and is being taken care of by our veterinarians, who will be observing her to make sure that the apparently superficial injuries are really just that.

From Anne Carroll. ‘We have spoken with the Orthopaedic Specialist re the soonest available day for him to perform this surgery and get this darling boy out of pain. THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE SO GENEROUSLY HFLPED AND SO MADE THIS SPECIALIST PROCEDURE POSSIBLE.
WE WILL UPDATE YOU OF ‘D’ DAY AND, OF COURSE, OF HIS PROGRESS THEREAFTER

The association are still taking donations as there will be ongoing physio and vet medication costs after the op.
