  • Another galgo puppy – victim of an uncaring galguero

Asia 8 month old galgo puppy leg 400 8 2017This poor baby is Asia, a brindle 8 month old galgo puppy who was rescued when his leg was trapped in a vile snare. The injury you see on his leg is the same on the outside (it’s on video but I can’t share it with you).

In Villanueva, Ciudad Real – Another galguero who probably have slept peacefully because he got rid of this little angel in a trap because he no longer serves him, and to slash his neck to remove the Chip.

Luckily he was found by a volunteer and taken to the vet. Even more lucky, although the flesh is cut through on both sides of the leg, it hasn’t touched the bone or broken the leg.

A foster home was found for him away from the shelter (which had an outbreak of the dreaded parvo) and his leg is healing. Even better, Asia will be adopted, soon to be in his forever home.

  • The Shame of Spain

Euthanazing a dog 400 8 2017Copied translation from my Save the Galgo facebook page.

It is worth reading this text. Excuse the hardness of the drawing.

Written by María Yolanda Cuevas Romero.

DOG POUNDS, FIELDS OF CONCENTRATION AND EXTERMINATION.

If creatures are not rescued from the hell of the kennel to creatures, who also carry a history of abandonment and previous mistreatment, … they are going to kill them.

“To be sacrificed” they call it, as if it were an offering to some god. But no: they are talking about annihilating them, fulminating them, poisoning them.

This is our daily bread throughout our country: to kill under the auspices and the approval of public administrations, local corporations, justice agencies, …

  • European Greyhound Network

Carmela 400Here is a weblink to the European Greyhound Network. It is based in Italy, although some of the dogs are in Germany. If you are thinking of adopting a galgo or podenco, please think carefully and talk to other adoptants about the process. Be sure the dogs are Pet Passported and proper homechecks are carried out. Also that there is good backup support should there be problems. Many galgos especially have been kept in horrendous conditions and can take many months to adjust to life in a home. My own Carmela came with serious mental problems and it took me over 2 years before she fully gained our trust in every aspect of her life with us. However, it was worth it as she has developed into the most delightful affectionate playful character.

  • Galicia, Spain – penalising people who help stray animals

There is a law which allows authorities to penalise people who help stray animals. I published about it recently when Malaga put up posters warning people they would be fined 500 euros for helping stray animals! Galicia province is now proposing to enforce the law, so please sign this petition to protest about it. The petition will be printed off and handed to the authorities.

  • The tale of a galgo puppy

Starved puppy 400 12 2016I was sent this piece which is linked to a petition. I refuse to publicise the petition because it claims ‘8,000 hunting hounds (galgos) are disposed of every year. Not sure where the person starting the petition has been for the past few years, but the figure is more like 100,000! However, here you can read the story.

Let me tell you a story, close your eyes and open your heart: I’m a Spanish puppy.

I’m locked in a basement, in a hole with my mother, my brothers and sisters. My Mom’s sick, she’s had so many babies that her milk dries up very quickly and doesn’t give us anything that’s necessary.

She knows that the man will kill some of us because they are too weak; she is terrified when she hears the footsteps on the hard and cold ground of concrete. She already saw him kill his other puppies by slamming their heads against the wall of our cell, they weren’t strong enough for what he wanted to do with it. It’s been a long time since she saw the light of the sun, my poor skeletal mother. We live in our faeces and sometimes we hear dog screams: they slaughter them outside… Mommy shakes every cry because she knows that one day it will be her turn.

  • Old, black and male – no one wants a galgo?

Black galgo male 2 400Meet Negro – he’s very similar to my first greyhound, a stray with bony joints from where she had laid on hard concrete – same for Negro. His life hasn’t been easy. Many would have shot him. Instead they dumped him.

As a young man, he was exceptional and that would give him an “opportunity” that would weigh him like a slab.
Who knows what it was.. an injury, a disease, the years just…
So his chance to live was to be a stud. Slave Creator, like him.
    Like their females.
9 years locked in, doomed not to run, not enjoy the free air, be alone, to survive.

Now he’s free and his chains are new. He’s black. He’s old. He’s male. This is all against him. Who will want to adopt him.
A look that is empty of emotion but full of desires.
Is there a hope for this tired heart please?

  • Galga pup – abandoned injured at 3 months old – victim of galgo rape?

Galgo pup 400 23 7 2017And here is the result for one of the victims of Galgo Rape as in the post below!

A sad little galga puppy, only 3 months old, and already she is no good. Abandoned with a broken leg, it’s cheaper to dump her than to operate. Because she’s no good. Her siblings int he litter will have seen the galguero one morning take her away and she doesn’t come back….. they’ve seen it so many times. But what they don’t know is that she’s not alone. She’s now rescued, doing the impossible to save her. And one day, she will have a loving forever home. Safe.

  • Galgo Rape – sign the petition!

Galgo rape 400 30 7 2017This uncontrolled breeding of galgos HAS TO STOP! This is nothing short of rape! Please sign and share the petition.

That is the galgas for the hunters: raped, forced to give birth again and again until they get rid of the dogs when they are no longer useful.

  • In Almeria a Galgo in a well – sadly too late to save

Galgo in well 112 400 7 2017Tragic end for this poor galgo, rescued by Galgos 112 but the vet couldn;t save him. In Almeria, a message received about this galgo was dying in a well.

He may have fallen in looking for shade from the heat, but unfortunately we can’t rule out someone throwing him in. He was immediately transferred to the vet. His body temperature when arriving and being treated was 40º and he was suffering from a failure which had left him in a comatose state, probably due to the intense heat endured (it was 43 degrees in the area) .

Despite the efforts of José Antonio, the centre’s veterinarian, the galgo we named Vesta was not able to survive and has left us.

Vesta was a young galgo, 2 or 3 years old, who had no chip, so it will be very difficult for us to locate the owner.

We could say that this galgo was lucky in that he received the maximum care in his last hours, but there are many Vestas wandering and dying alone. Despite attempts by some to convince us, the reality we face daily shows that these are not isolated cases. We at Galgos 112 will continue to work so that every day the abusers make it harder to get away with it.

How brave are these dedicated volunteers who face and deal with these upsetting situations too frequently.
