  • Great Global Greyhound Walk, 11 6 2017

Great Global Greyhound Walk 400 2017A friend of mine organised a French one…here’s her report. ‘It was the Great Global Greyhound Walk today and I organised the one in France. My dear friends supported the walk and I asked for donations to be made to Pepis Dog Refuge. There were four Sighthounds, my rescue Greyhound Jack, Malva my rescue Galgo and Beryl brought Polar and Bracken. Friends joined in with their own dogs as well. We raised €55 today and some more has been promised. I will send via PayPal as soon as I know the full amount. Keep up the good work!’

In the photo – Claire is in pink with spaniel Stan, retired rescued greyhound Jack and black galga Malva from Scooby. I’m in blue on the right with cream boy Polar from Pepis and OH David is at the end with brindle galgo Bracken from Galgos del Sol.

  • Scooby – Open letter to animal protection organisations in Castille y Leon

Scooby Alma 400 6 2017Here’s a link to the Scooby News blog where Fermin asks that all animal protection associations in Castille y Leon work together to form a strong group to fight the maltreatment of animals there.

This stunning galga has been named Alma, saved from the Valladolid perrera. She has an old injury to her foreleg which was left to heal on its own! Scooby have also taken another galgo from the same perrera also with a broken foreleg and he is due to have an operation to try and repair it. They need help to pay for his vet care, along with all the other animals they recently rescued.

If you can’t have a dog or can’t adopt another one, how about a Virtual Adoption? Here are the details.

  • Beacon Dog Training – instructional videos and articles

That dog geek 400Not about galgos but about any dog. I take Polar to Obedience classes and a couple of weeks ago on the Club fb page was a video about a dog training club in Australia, where one of the proprietors is a paraplegic, which obviously involves some dog training different from non-disabled. Here is a link to their website, if anyone is interested in discussing the subject with Tom.

They also have several interesting videos, including this one on Training a Dog to obey in different situations, plus short articles with graphics.

  • Operation Chase – breaking into the illegal world of stolen galgos

Dead galgo A vila 400 6 2017This is a Google translation of the story of Operation Chase – and 81 galgos.
    :
Stolen dogs that were not good for hunting were abandoned or cruelly slaughtered.

As a result of the continuous complaints made by people and municipalities, especially the Comarca of the “Moraña” of Avila, personally received and through the Government Subdelegation, which were transmitted to the Civil Guard on the issue of poaching in that region and the theft of dogs, especially GALGOS, led to the start of specific surveillance and police investigations at the end of the summer of 2016.

The investigation was initiated by the Judicial Police Organic Unit and the SEPRONA of the Avila Command, within the police operation called ‘Chase’, the same ones coincided with others that, driven by Environmental and Animal Protection Organizations, carried out by the Seprona of the Commander of Madrid, the reason why it was decided to realize the investigations jointly.

  • From death row in Gesser perrera to home life in Switzerland

Gesser galga original 400In December 2012 I posted an appeal for help for some galgos in Gesser Perrera, Cadiz. The staff were leaving for Xmas holiday and putting down the dogs in the perrera. Here is the story and some delightful photos of one of the lucky ones, saved and now living a lovely life in Swizerland. Marianne tells her story.

‘We got her through Lavida “https://www.facebook.com/Tierschutz.LAVIDA/” that was the association, but the contact person in switzerland was “Jackys Hundehort”. I don’t remember the name of the spanish shelter where she came from to Switzerland. I just remember that the Spanish woman (who gave her the name Linda) was very caring. I met her at the airport in Zurich.’

Always lovely to read a happy ending. Enjoy these photos of Linda.

  • Update on Polar – looking into Turmeric

The results of Polar’s recent xray unsurprisingly showed calcification of his damaged leg joint bone and arthritis. So the option of an operation to insert a prosthesis joint is negative. Since the leg doesn’t bother him nor hinder him from chasing around with his galgo housemate Bracken, the decision is to leave well alone.

Having treated him so far with MSM, I’m now looking into moving on to Devil’s Claw, which I find successful in treating my aged horses and also my first greyhound, back in the 1990’s. I’ve also been recommended to look at Turmeric, for which a retired English greyhound is being successfully treated, belonging to a friend. She purchases the product, then freezes it in a coffee bean mould and adds the required dosage to the dog’s feed daily. This is the weblink to the Turmeric under the name Golden Paste, and the coffee bean mould.

Have any readers had experience of using Turmeric for their canine?

  • Spanish Civil Code – get Spain into the 21 st Century on animal welfare

    SIGN AND SHARE PLEASE
The Spanish Civil Code dates from 1889.

For this law, which over time has undergone numerous reforms to modernize and adapt in other respects, animals are still considered “semovientes”, that is, mere things.

Spain needs to adapt its Civil Code to the current social and legal reality. That is why we propose to promote the reform of the Civil Code so that animals receive the legal status already granted by the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which in Article 13 recognizes animals as sentient beings, that is, living beings Endowed with sensitivity.

This legal anachronism has already been reformed in other Civil Codes such as Catalan, which expressly recognizes that animals are not things, or the French, Austrian, Swiss or German Civil Code, which have already carried out the relevant reform to change the statute Legal from animals from “things” to “living beings endowed with sensibility”.

The Spanish legislator must assume the reality and current needs of the moment we live in, where animals are living beings with rights recognized and protected by the same legal system of which the Civil Code forms part and conform legislation to contemporary society and recognition , Affection and respect that are deserved by living beings with whom we share life and even coexistence.

In short, from the Observatory Justice and Animal Defense, we ask that you keep the animals in mind when updating our laws and our Civil Code is updated in this aspect, because animals are not things.

P.S. Once achieved on February 14 that the plenary of the Congress of Deputies unanimously approved to urge the Government to undertake this legal reform, in March 2017 the Affinity Foundation joins in this campaign to the Justice and Animal Defense Observatory with the aim of adding Efforts, achieve more social support and achieve final victory: that our Civil Code be reformed as soon as possible to be recognized black on white in our law as the #AnimalesNOsonCosas.

  • Polar’s Diary – update

Head 2 400Regular readers will remember my galgo Polar, adopted from Pepis Refuge 4 years ago when he was dumped at the refuge gates as a 2-month old puppy with a damaged hind leg. Update of 2 years ago.

Although the leg doesn’t bother him, it is bothering me now, as he is carrying it – apart from when he races round the garden with his buddy Bracken. So on Monday he is going into the vet for his leg to be xrayed, as there are now some French specialist vets who do the same work as Fitzpatrick Referrals in the UK. Please keep fingers crossed for him that now he is fully grown, it may be possible to operate.

  • Marching for the Spanish hounds in Frankfurt, Germany

Hundreds of galgos and podencos marched through the streets of Frankfurt, Germany, on Sunday, to raise public awareness to the terrible maltreatment the hounds suffer at the hands of the Spanish hunters. Video on this link.
