Emergency appeal for donations for injured galga in Cadiz
Charl del Rio of 112carlotagalgos received an urgent call today from a young woman in a village near Cadiz where she found this young galga with an horrendous back wound. The girl is staying with the galga whilst Charl organises for her to go straight to her vet in Malaga. Here’s what Charl says.
‘The rescue train has begun. Confirmed a female but bleeding a lot. So we have been in touch with a contact in Cadiz who has offered to go quickly and pick her up and bring her. We will meet up and head to the clinic. This is a nasty nasty wound which doesn’t look too old but in 40 degree heat infection and fever can set in very quickly. The girl who caught her tells me shes plagued with flies naturally and cooked flesh is not an easy thing to heal in this heat. So a little blind on whats coming in but we will do our absolute best.

Leech Therapy – old fashioned remedies could be best
I am a great believer in natural remedies, after all, it’s all that was available before the discovery of penicillin, pain killers and antibiotics etc. Tunde, currently living in Germany, has sent this interesting piece about the use of leech therapy. A lot of food for thought.
‘My galga Guzu has arthrosis. Willow bark helps her a lot but it is not enough. When the weather is bad (cool and wet) then she is in pain. I got some chemicals, painkiller to be exact, but I am not happy with this (I am afraid of side effects).
Several German sighthound forum members suggested I go to leech therapy with her.
Obviously in many cases the leeches help greatly when the dog (or the
person) has arthrosis. I know of some dogs that did not need ANY painkillers whatsoever after a leech therapy. -
Disposal of dead dogs – Scooby denounces
In march of this year, people brought their 14 year old dog who was very sick to a vet clinic and the poor dog had to be put to sleep. The people paid Euro 160,- to the vet for the injection and also to let the dog be burned after his death. In April this illegal ´graveyard´ from dead dogs was discovered in Herrera de Duero and Scooby found this same poor dog burried there in that wood…!!!?????????? In April, Scooby already announced this case to the police.

Portable dog enclosures – suggestions
You may remember a couple of weeks ago I asked for ideas about portable dog enclosures. I’ve had a couple of helpful suggestions which I thought I’d share with you.
Frank organises an annual greyhound get-together in May and he sent photos of what he uses. Obviously the fencing isn’t high enough to stop a galgo jumping over to chase any hare/rabbit stupid enough to appear in the field! But useful for keeping the dogs tethered in their own space. Instead of the metal poles, I suggested the white plastic electric fencing poles like I use for my horses.
Kate thought the panels I found looked great; she suggested an idea for pegs.

The threats that Spanish volunteers live with
this Scooby story illustrates the problem for volunteers in Spain who want to denounce animal cruelty. I’ve highlighted it in my books on the plight of the galgo and the plight of the podenco…mob rule rules! And Salamanca is a hellhole for all animals, even Scooby have problems getting help for saving animals! Remember, this is a so-called civilised Western European country!!!!!

Pepis Dog Refuge – ways to help care for 80 dogs!
It costs 600 euros/month to feed over 70 dogs at Pepis Refuge, Pedrera, Seville, about 20 of them galgos, many are podencos…and more being dumped on them every day!!! That’s before they start on vet fees, wormers, scalibor collars, flea & tick treatment. If you can help feed the dogs at Pepis, please donate here. Here are the profiles of the gorgeous galgos, please share and help them…feed them, find them forever homes. PLEASE

Portugal – new law on cruelty to dogs
On 25th July 2014 the Portuguese government passed a law making it an offence to hit a dog, perpetrators would be sent to jail. You can read about it here. In discussion with animal rescuers in Portugal, they are positive about the law as they feel that the threat of jail will discourage some. As is always the case, it only applies to pet dogs, not the hunting dogs. Let’s hope it doesn’t fall by the wayside, like in Spain where the threat of a denuncia doesn’t count for much!
