Here’s a couple of stories with happy endings, from Pro-Galgo.
Two of our worst and most memorable cruelty cases this year are Bella, the severely emaciated galga and Cielo the poor galga hanged from the waist.
The following is an email received from Charl in Madrid.
I’m offline at home, so not able to check on latest news from Spain, but the latest on Karmel is that she is on double dose Megasolene for 3 weeks and then we reduce the amount to see what dose is small enough to keep the disease under control.
She is being bathed once a week to treat her damaged skin and hair, and is a happy personality, but losing weight – 6 kilos in the last 3 weeks.
10th August – The organisation Rescani is organising a special fundraising day throughout Belgium
The capture of Rosario in Niort lasted only 15 minutes at the most!
After five and a half months of following and tracing her without being able to catch her, we needed to go carefully. It necessitated calling upon a professional of the SACPA (Societe Protection des Animaux) at Poitiers to come to our aid.
The hypodermic rifle needed to be filled for a dog of 30kg. Sebastien spent several different times in front of Rosario to get her used to seeing him. He then shot the tranquiliser arrow into her thigh. Rosario was surprised by the impact.
She ran. She crossed the boulevard Atlantic, at a pedestrian crossing, without looking if there was traffic coming.

It’s encouraging to find some of the French associations involved in galgo rescue and campaigning now working together. After all, they are all working towards the same goal, to improve the life of the galgos and podencos in Spain.
My beautiful brindle galga Karmel is sick. It is just one year since I went to Spain, to Cuidad Real, to collect her from the refuge. She has brought such love and affection into our home, and now she is sick, and we don’t know the cause.
A problem has developed in the feet of my galga. My vet thinks it could be an allergy problem but, as she is one of the hundreds to come out of Spain whose history is unknown, we don’t know if she has suffered this problem before.
All her tests for filaria, leishmaniosis, ehrlichia were negative and, until 3 months ago, she was a normal galga, sleeping on her sofa, walking our meadows, stealing food from the kitchen, even though she had plenty to eat!
Suddenly one morning in April, she went very lame, hardly able to walk.
The pads of her feet were inflamed, the insides of her ears were very pink, and she had a small open sore on her tummy. My vet took scrapings for microscopic examination.
As we know nothing of Karmel’s history, it was difficult to ascertain if it was an allergy – it was that time of year – or genetic, or her immune system.
This is a podenco, found chained through its mouth and round its head to a wall, left to die.
It was found in the town of Higuera de la Serena.
An angel named Olga rescued it, with a lot of help from the ayuntanimiento (town hall). It took from dawn till dusk to free him, he was so terrified and the chain was so thick.
He is now being cared for in her home; her husband cannot get near him, he is so terrified of men.
What must this poor dog have suffered. What sick human inflicted this upon him.
Olga asks if you would email the town hall hserena@dip-badajoz.es and congratulate them on rescuing this dog. with her. Here is the message to copy and paste.
