  • Protectora Scooby Newsletter 4 – Kennel Renovations – we need funds and builders

    From Fermin Perez.

    Kennel Renovations

You may recall from our autumn bulletin we appealed for financial help towards kennel repairs. We have not been able to do the work because we failed to raise the funds. In addition there is a lack of available, skilled bricklayers in our area. It is pretty much impossible to find labour to do the job and within a reasonable estimate (€5k).

Our appeal remains and if you are able to donate towards it, we’d be very grateful. We’d love to complete the renovations in the spring when it is less rainy. We desperately need to repair brickwork, smooth the floor area to make cleaning easier
    and safer.

And now a rehoming story – not a galgo but an example of the work Scooby does.

  • Protectora Scooby Newsletter 3 – laws and laws! Not for hunting dogs

    From Fermin Perez.

    Hunting Season In Full Swing

The hunting season began in earnest in the autumn and this brings with it more animal abuse, deaths, neglect and exploitation of dogs who are later rejected. The poor souls are either surrendered directly to Scooby or dumped in the countryside straying and fending for themselves, running the risk of starvation and injury in a road traffic accident. Some hunters, in various locations near to each other, corral their dogs and ask us to take them. The calls from local villagers about loose dogs have already started. We drive to pick them up, bring them to our clinic and kennels where they are vaccinated, castrated, and treated for injury and illness. We keep them safe until we can home them in Spain or via our international support groups.

The weather so far has been very wet and this has made hunting difficult. It remains to be seen how the season continues, whether or not it is impeded by soggy winter weather, and how many dogs are discarded into the Spanish shelters.

  • Protectora Scooby Newsletter 2 – Welfare and Tired Computers

    From Fermin Perez.

We are always pushing for welfare developments for animals living in Spain. Unexpectedly we acquired a new dimension to this area of our work. The Spanish government proposed an update to our animal welfare legislation. It was so ground-breaking, it seemed too good to be true. We realised it was when the Government acquiesced to demands from the Spanish hunting community and agreed to exclude hunting dogs. Given the thousands of hunting dogs exploited, abused and dumped in Spain every year, this is an amendment to the proposed legislative update Spanish rescues and animal advocates are unwilling to take lying down. We have been part of an active campaign calling on the Government to withdraw the amendment. It centres on the fact a dog is a dog and all breeds should be equal in the eyes of the law : “#MismosPerrosMismaLey”. We write more about this issue later in the newsletter but sadly it looks as if the Government is unwilling to take the necessary steps to protect hunting dogs.

  • Galga Eden – ready for a forever home atlast

    Eden after ticks 400 12 2022
Regular readers will remember the story of the galga starving and covered heavily in ticks, who luckily went into the care of Galgos Rescue Almeria. Sandy Galgoslover now give an update.

‘Galgo’s Rescue Almeria is feeling emotional.

Being born as a galgo in Spain means a life of deprivation, neglect, abuse, humiliation…..

We can try to repair the damage and prepare them to integrate in a world unknown to them. After a period of rehabilitation, many can build a new and different life, although some carry permanent mental damage.

How Eden’s life began we will never know, what we do know is how it goes from the day she was freed. There were rumors, stories circulated, but we never imagined that there was a place worse than hell where animals were left to their fate in a horrific way. The date August 4, 2022 is etched in our brains as a day we will never forget. Anger, emotions….. so many feelings haunted our minds when we rescued Eden from this place. It was terrible to see, when we arrived at the vet everyone was shocked. They had never seen anything like it.

  • Protectora Scooby Newsletter 1

    Scooby logo 400
Unfortunately Protectora Scooby no longer have their volunteer posting their English blog. So I have copied their December newsletter and I’ll be publishing installments over the courts of the next couple of weeks. Here’s No 1 from Fermin.

Thank you very much to everyone who has helped Scooby over the last year. We are grateful to those who donated in aid of our rescue and rehabilitation work; offered a permanent or foster home to one of our dogs or cats; worked as a volunteer with our animals; and have raised funds in their community and amongst friends. We are thankful to the lawyers who have helped us prepare for cruelty cases going to court. Thanks are also due to a small number of volunteer, support groups to home dogs and cats in
Spain and internationally. This is crucial for the animals, the adopters and our shelter. Without adoptions
making kennel space, we cannot rescue more animals.
