Life of abuse on the end of a chain in Spain?
I’m always pleased to hear from readers of my blogs, whether they are regulars or ‘one-offs’. I recently received this one, which is not from someone who has written before. I know he refers to podencos, but I thought you would be interested to read it. Not sure where they got the first paragraph from because it isn’t one I’ve written, though I agree with its sentiment. We all know the last 2 sentences in the second paragraph are rubbish! Those hunters who do treat their dogs with respect are a very small minority and still get rid of them when they are no longer of use.
I wonder if you agree with their comments.

banddbrennan@yahoo.co.uk“If a podenco itself could choose between a life in Spain on a short chain, vegetative in the burning sun, often without food or water, often abused , only being released for hunting for between 12 to 25 days or a life in a forever adopted home with love, care and attention every day food, long walks and an own basket where do you think a podenco would choose?!”
This is a very unfortunate and tendentious generalisation, many spaniards adopt podencos and give them a happy life within the family environment (that’s the case of my family and many others). Additionally, most of the Spanish hunters I have met treated their podencos with respect. You should reconsider the accuracy of that paragraph.

GalgoPod Andco – Galga Ladybug waiting for a forever home
When I joined dozens of other galgo and podencos rescue associations and adoptants themselves back in 2021 when we all marched from the European Union office in Strasbourg round the city publicising the plight of the dogs, I met up with some of the people of GalgoPod Andco. Here is a lovely galga with them looking for a forever home. Just look at those ears!!‘Ladybug is looking for a forever home. 6 years old. She arrived at the Vila Real kennel in Portugal in November 2020 with her sister Leonor, already adopted. They lived in an old car in a field and in very bad condition. She’s now at my foster home in Spain until I find a family.
Ladybug is skittish at first but gains confidence at home in a couple of days, not a dog especially scared, somewhat insecure at times outside. At home she is very affectionate, confident and lives very well with other dogs. With kids can go very playful too.
On the street she walks very well and very calm, but always on a leash. Mariquiña is a dog love and finally deserves a home. She’s ready to travel now. -

Protectora Scooby – protecting the association and volunteers
‘A long time ago we had to stop the volunteering program in Scooby because we had had some similar incidents and wanted to make sure that we did everything according to law. So we got into the hands of lawyers and experts in volunteering; for this two members of our team made a workshop on volunteering and we have prepared a series of documents and rules; on the one hand they ensure the safety of volunteers and on the other hand Scooby’s continuity. We tell you a little the story about the news we share, it’s an Italian volunteer from an Italian shelter who took a dog for a while, not knowing why the dog severely attacked her and the volunteer ended up in hospital. The responsibility of the shelter is being investigated. That’s why, because we already foreseen this, we’ve done what we’ve done. We leave you the full news in this link ‘

Association Galgos New Life – saving Chantal
Chantal is a very fearful galga, has been safe with the Association Galgos New Life for a year but the volunteers are still working hard to gain her trust. Her fear of human beings has begun to subside but she will need a very special experienced home for adoption.
Why do galgueros have to inflict such fear in their dogs, what does it gain them?
