So many galgos are abandoned by the galgueros to take their chance on surviving as best they can. Hundreds of them starve, fearful of humans, their only chance of help being from someone who is able to catch them, before they are injured on the road. I rant against the Spanish galgueros and gitanos for their barbaric treatment towards galgos and podencos. But I will be the first to admit that British people can be just as sick and perpetrate horrendous cruelty to animals. The difference is that there is the RSPCA to follow up complaints of cruelty, far more than Seprona in Spain seems willing to do. And more Brits are likely to report cases of animal cruelty to the RSPCA than Spanish people are to report cruelty cases to Seprona, for fear of reprisals against themselves, their families, their homes, their cars. Intimidation, in other words.

Spanish galgo Romero, a survivor looking for his forever home
Introducing Romero. He was born in the wild in Murcia, no one knows what happened to his mother and siblings. Only 4 months old, he appeared one day with a badly injured hind leg, near a house. Food and water were put down for him, which he consumed after dark, when no humans were about. In terror and considerable pain, he survived in this way. One day he collapsed and was taken by Gaynor to her vet, who had to amputate his badly injured and infected hind leg.

Galgos del Sol – Sponsor a Kennel and donate to rescued galgos
Galgos del Sol is a new association in Murcia, founded by Tina Solera and her friend Gaynor. 5 Kennels are currently nearly completed – free labour, donated materials. These kennels will house the galgos which Tina is rescuing – everywhere she drives, there seems to be an abandoned galgo! Funds are desperately needed to pay for microchipping, vaccinating, castrating and feeding these galgos – donations to buy food especially needed at the moment.

Galgo Dino, 3 months old, in the care of El Arca de Noe Cordoba
This is Dino, 3 months old, abandoned in the street with an injured leg.
El Arca de Noe explain. ‘I present to you Dino, a beautiful galgo puppy that instead of worrying about eating, playing and sleeping like any baby is concerned with survival, with only 3 legs and one badly injured, abandoned in a very dangerous town in Cordoba.

4 month old galgo puppy – help Baas Galgo with her recovery
This is Marisol, the latest victim of cruelty and abandon taken in by the BaasGalgo Association. Weep with me for the suffering of this little creature and for the courage of Leticia who has her in her care.
‘Marisol is only four months old and already she is suffering from severe rickets, scabies, mange, malnutrition, bone problems, and to top it all she has a bad fever and her condition is critical. Marisol was found on the morning of the 9th of December in front of the entrance to the LIDL supermarket in Torrijos (Toledo).

Animal Protection Service launched in Alicante, Spain
Just had this news in about an animal protection service launched in the Alicante area. It’s to be hoped they will have some ‘clout’ and be able to prosecute animal maltreatment cases. But it’s the problem of abandoned dogs with their microchips cut out which will be a difficult one to police. Still, it’s a start. Let’s wish them every success.
