  • ACTIN – an overview of their work in 2014

ACTIN logo 130As you know, I publicise the work ACTIN do on behalf of all animal rescue associations in Spain, trying to improve the lot of the abandoned and maltreated animals. Here is a word from the founder Viv Wharton.

Happy New Year and a big thank you to the many who have helped us. We thought you might like to see what you have helped Actin Association achieve in 2014

It has been just over one year since Actin responded to the many worrying calls of eyewitness accounts regarding a local pound. We ended up rescuing so many dogs and it was such a task without having a rescue shelter, with no funds and with the animals having unexpected illnesses. Thankfully our supporters responded to our calls for assistance, because without them we would not have had a chance. In hindsight we would have been under less pressure, had we been better equipped and prepared but we acted with our hearts and when we saw the faces of those dogs, we could not leave them behind to suffer.

  • Last Hope Dog Rescue, Murcia – can you help galgo Snoopy?

Irene Allan galgo green eyes 250 11 2014This is Snoopy Dawg, with his stunning green eyes! He is a beautiful galgo who has been waiting too long for his forever home. He is about 18 months old, free from all the Mediterranean diseases, castrated, good with cats – loves to play with dogs and people. The perfect hound.

He was found in the campo with his penis skin sliced open and very infected. He was anaesthatised whilst it was stitched up. He’s fine now.

He’s with Last Hope Dog Rescue in Alicante, please let’s give him the best Xmas present ever – a forever family. Please share him far and wide. Contact Irene if you can help this boy.

  • ACTIN/AWSM galgos for adoption

Ky AWSM 250 3 2013This is Ky, who I recently met with the rest of the ACTIN/Animal Welfare Support Murcia Galgos Aysha, Rubio and Donna – who’s only a year old. They all have a tale to tell of cruelty and suffering at the hands of the galgueros but are now safe in foster and waiting for their forever homes. They’ve been waiting quite a long time, there must be someone out there who has space in their hearts and homes for these beautiful galgos.

Ky is black and white, Aysha is a stunning chocolate brown, Rubio is tan and Donna is in the bottom pix lying on the sofa! You can also see me below with little Podenca mum Bonny, also looking for a forever home, and their foster mom Sherlie. If you can’t adopt one, please consider sponsoring one – they all need to eat, why not sponsor a galgo for a month or more.

Please contact ACTIN if you wish to sponsor adopt one. admin@actin-spain.com

  • 4th April 2013 – Happy Belated Birthday DutchGalgoLobby

Apologies that this news is a little late. I’m currently in the UK for a funeral and flat clearing and have restricted access to a computer.

Happy 2nd Birthday DutchGalgoLobby on 4th April 2013

On April 4th, DutchGalgoLobby celebrates her 2nd birthday. In her relatively short existence, DutchGalgoLobby has achieved quite a lot. Dutch Politics are now well aware of the Galgo mistreatment in Spain and one of the parties even set up a resolution to ask the Dutch government to take action. Regretfully this resolution did not get enough votes to pass because they still think it is an internal Spanish problem, to be solved by Spain. (Subsidiarity principle)

Therefore we approached the European Parliament which is in progress but takes time. European parliament is rather sluggish!

  • 2 galgos down a 30ft well – Galgos del Sol to the rescue

Well_Galgos_GdS_250 1_2013We all know that most galgueros, especially in rural areas, will stop at nothing to dispose of their dogs, especially at the end of hunting. Galgos del Sol and Tina Solera have just taken in two young galgas, Tina tells the story.

‘We help alot of galgueros in this area…… I am so bloody disapointed with this, I can’t tell you. We have spoken with some galgueros and they believe for sure these two young galgas were stolen and the thieves did not want them to get back home. That is why galgueros build BUNKERS to prevent theft. Pistolero was stolen from a galguero here in our village two years ago… he was also found over 4 hrs away down in a deep well. These two young galgas were thrown in a well 30 meters deep and pulled out approx a couple of days ago by firemen.

  • Galgos del Sol – saving yet more abandoned galgos in Murcia

Skip galgo 1 250 – Yes, there’s a galga dumped in there! You will remember the rescue of the Bullas dogs in Operation Rehala in January and then the Mazarron dogs from the gypsy in Murcia as well. Galgos del Sol have been very involved in these operations, taking many dogs into their care. This week they have rescued another half dozen abandoned galgos, one of whom had been dumped in a skip! – Luckily he has not been beaten almost to death- like esperanza a couple of years ago – just injured and terrified.

    Here’s the story so far.

‘It’s impossible to try and holiday when you live in Murcia. Galgos del Sol gets a call and goes out again and what do we find..?? A galga trapped in the rubbish dumpster and 3 galgos living on the rubbish tip. The galga trapped was very difficult because she was scared so we she would become aggresive when we tried to climb in, and the others were not so easy either.
