  • Luz, dragged behind a ‘training’ vehicle – curse you galguero! It’s no holiday for galgos in Seville!

Luz demo 2 25 03 2011 190 Representatives of Sofia El Refugio Escuela in Seville took part in the manifestation there on 25th March 2011. They took along with them Luz, victim of horrendous abuse at the hands of a galguero, who is now in foster receiving the love and care he needs to rebuild his life and his health. Here’s her story, in their words.

‘What we cannot express is the rage, even hatred for the man who did this. All this poor dog could see was blood and death. Pulled by a 4 x 4 transforming nature into a death camp. Galguero, what a terrible word.

  • Spanish Galgos Ulises, Maisey, Luna from El Paraiso – please donate to vet fees

Naisey after operation 24 11 2010 250 More abandoned and rescued galgos……from the perrera, from the countryside, urbanizations……….they are being abandoned everywhere, and it is only November – still the middle of the Spanish hunting season! One of the galgas rescued from El Paraiso could be pregnant, so an urgent spaying operation has now been carried out. And Maisey, an abandoned injured galga – sadly her leg could not be saved, so she is yet another one with an amputation. And the vet fees need paying!

Ulises was a galgo who had been living rough for months, no one could get near him. Eventually he was so ill he could be caught. He has leishmania, ehrlichia, rickets, a skin condition, but he is a fighter, as are the other two…..he wants to live and experience a forever home.

  • Galgo Support Holland and Baus, the great survivor of torture and drowning

Baus 3 Galgo Support Holland 250 Introducing Baus. Anja Schot of Galgo Support Holland tells his story. ‘Baus was tortured and put in a septic tank to drown. His destroyed front leg sadly could not be saved, but because of the good care, love and respect of the volunteers from El Refugio Escuela, Baus decided to live! GSH appealed for help to pay for his operations. It was worth it! Despite the torture, all the pain he has been through, he has never stopped loving human beings. He always is happy and a very special dog. And here he is, at dog training, where he passed his first exams!’

  • Galga Phoebe, saved from drowning, looking for foster or forever home

Phoebe 1 Tina 02 2010 250 Galgos are still being abandoned, even though it is now the Spanish hunting season. This bitch was rescued by an English couple, exhausted and in danger of drowning in a canal. She was literally on her last breath when they dragged her out. They think she was in the canal because farmers were shooting at her the day before. She was exhausted. Tina says, ‘The couple still have her in their home but need a new place for her. They wont take her in the refuge because she is out of the border and to be honest after all she has been through its better she doesnt come in anyway..’. She is about 1 year old, her body already scarred, as you can see in the photo.

If you can help with foster or forever home, please contact Tina, who will also be very grateful for donations towards her microchip, vaccinations, castration.

  • Scooby Holland hold a ScoobyDay!

Last weekend, Scooby Holland held their annual ScoobyDay and here’s the link to view the pictures.

It says that the day was a great succes, the weather was fine (with only a couple of showers) and there were lots of dogs. Furthermore there were shops with all kinds of things to buy for the dogs, for the benefit of Scooby and other Galgo organisations.
There was a joint walk in Soestduinen, a wonderful area where sighthounds can run free and Fermín Perez was present for a chat and if you wanted he would pose for a picture. There were also other volunteers from Scooby present for everybody to meet and talk to. So it was a wonderful happening.

  • Galgo puppy saved from hanging in Spain – educating the young is one answer

Diana, an erstwhile fundraiser for Scooby Medina, has just returned from another trip to the centre. She has posted this story on her blog, about a young girl who rescued a galgo puppy from being hung. The low life Spaniard who was about to hang the dog is the type who would have killed the dog whatever its breed, and unfortunately there are tens of thousands of these men all over the world who would kill a dog without a second thought.

It’s nice to be able to post a positive story, illustrating how educating the younger generations in every country that animal cruelty is not acceptable is a positive step.

  • Galgo puppy Peritas, now Ulisses, living in Madrid

Do you remember the little puppy Peritas, saved by Tina Solera. He was rehomed in Madrid. Here is a delightful video of him. How I wish all galgo puppies could have such a wonderful life away from the horrors of life with a Spanish galguero.
