Please read this story of Ziva, a galga with hardly any hair, taken from her hunter owner and now with Scooby…please read and help Scooby – share their work with everyone.
The story of Herman, another incredible survivor of the galgo holocaust. Brought back from the brink of death by Scooby, he now needs his forever home to complete his story.
Susan Dawson did a fantastic job or creating the 2013 Pepis Calendar and she’s now asking everyone to submit fabulous pix of their hounds for the 2014 calendar. Here’s what she says.
‘The Blue Greyhound is putting together a fantastic calendar for 2014 to raise funds for Pepis Dog Refuge based in Pedrera, near Seville in Spain. The 2013 calendar was a huge success, and we received lots of positive feedback from buyers in the UK, Spain, Sweden, Belgium, Finland, France, USA and Canada.

Update on the Portuguese galgos. One hunter has been busy killing puppies before Teresa could save them. But here’s the news about the first galga Estrela. Ines reports. ‘regarding that horrible man getting rid of all pups but 2 :(. We are not exactly sure what happened, but apparently he killed them, but won’t give us any more details… we just can wait for Estrela to leave this place.
Estrela is only mentally slighty better from the abuse she was given. She is on special high energy feed, plus a mix of raw green beef tripe and liver, and Anima-Strath supplements. She has also been wormed twice. Her owner has finally allowed us to take her to the vet this week, so she can get tests done to see why isn’t she putting more weight.
Here’s a story of a galga and puppies in Portugal. Whilst there are not so many galgos there, these hounds often suffer. Matt Lightfoot tells the tale.
‘Mum in the pictures belongs to an alcoholic (the man that killed the other pups). One of the female pups will replace the mum as breeding stock, and this lovely lady will be handed over to Teresa (volunteer rescuer) once the pups are weaned. She is extremely emaciated and Teresa has already left him a 10Kg bag of dog food, but the galga needs special nursing, high energy feed (like Royal Canin starter) or she won’t survive feeding these puppies.
At the beginning of the week Fermin Perez of Scooby went out to buy a new cement mixer; on his way back he picked up yet another abandoned galgo. And then a couple of days later, this small galgo puppy was found in a pinewood, abandoned! Cobie, of Scooby, says ‘I would like to talk in that wood to the person who left her all alone there, without water or food!! She is only skin and bones, dehydrated and malnourished, some 7 weeks old. Now she is ok after an infusion, she does not yet want to eat but the volunteers are going to buy and cook chicken, we hope she will eat it!
You may remember that earlier in the year I posted about Maria Teresa and the Baeza refuge. The sister of a wonderful galgo supporter has now created a website for the shelter, and donated her time and expertise to them. Here is the result.
The shelter is still searching for volunteers for the following tasks:
1. translate the content of the website into French
2. taking photos of the shelter and of the dogs for the website
