More than 50 galgos have been rescued, including two litters of puppies, living in a garbage dump in Ontigola, Madrid province, covered in wounds, scabies and terrified. Thanks to a neighbour who denounced the situation, 6 rescue associations have taken the dogs. It took all afternoon to catch them and transport them to safety. They all need vet care, medication, blood analyses, castrations. Then they have to be rehabilitated in preparation for adoption.

Here is the story of Nelson, a 4-month old galgo pup, rescued and in the care of SOS Galgos.
Nelson, a galgo puppy needs your help.
Nelson got his name because he is a survivor. We found him at just one month old and almost dead. He had scabies, a broken rib, fractures at femoral, shinbone and calf, as well as osteoporosis due to his dehydration.
His conditions needed an immediate traumatological treatment. We need your help to pay the costs of the emergency aid and postoperative care and as well for possible complications.
My galgas Carmela and Sahara (with hubbie David) arriving at the European Parliament. I’m delighted to report that the Manifestation in Strasbourg organised by CREL had tremendous support from groups across Europe – over 1,000 people marching, with their galgos and podencos – and a borzoi and afghan. Just shows the strength of feeling against the Spanish hunters and their barbaric treatment they perpetrate on their hunting dogs, primarily galgos and podencos. Many hounds there bore the scars – where they had been cut up, beaten, burned, injured in road accidents, caught in snares – all walking on behalf of their ‘cousins’ still in Spain and still suffering. They came in family groups too, and one lady brought all 6 of her rescued galgos.

You will see their claim – 160 galgos abandoned every day, that’s 58,400 galgos every year – so much for those people who have said to me ‘you exaggerate’ when I say 50,000. SOS Galgos is based in Barcelona city, in the veterinary clinic of Albert, which is where the operations – shown in the photos – were carried out.
I have now composed a letter to the Federacion Espanola de Galgos, the ‘umbrella’ association in Spain to which the other galgo hunting federations belong, and invite you to send copies also. SOS Galgos have taken some of the galgos from the Jerez perrera in Cadiz, including the heavily pregnant bitch. Here’s what Anna Clements says.
‘Some photos of the galgos we got out of the Jerez shelter today (Monday). The two brindle ones together should be arriving on Wednesday and will be at the event. We plan to get some more out during the course of the week. More were taken into the perrera today, brought in by hunters.’
