With all the horror stories recently, it’s lovely to receive a heartwarming story of two galgos who found their forever home in the heart of Kathryn and her husband. Here she tells Gracie and Jake’s Story.
I first found out about galgos seven years ago when I was reading about rescue dogs on the internet. I came across the Greyhounds in Need website and read all about the galgos. I had never heard of the galgos and their plight and what I read was heartbreaking. I thought that my husband and I would be able to give a galgo a good home and contacted GIN to say that we were interested.
We had a home check and GIN said that we were suitable. They had some galgos coming across from Spain and they would be in quarantine in the UK and we could visit them.
These are just 4 of the 7 new galgos to arrive in the Jerez perrera for killing. Poor Mama galga, used for breeding, has a huge tumour. It costs 30 euros for an organisation to take the dogs including chip, rabies vacc, passport and worm and tick treatment. A volunteer reports. ‘This week is especially had with the arrival of many galgos and dogs that have been used for hunting and now already kicked out by the thugs of hunters. S.O.S KENNEL BADAJOZ! Curse the hunters and people close to them!
Everyone in Spain either working in shelters/refuges or who has adopted a galgo – be warned, there is news already of loose galgos in Murcia being taken by the gitanos/galgueros ready for hunting starting next month….galgos in unattended shelters -(the majority of shelters don’t have anyone there overnight) are particularly at risk – and if the thieves are challenged, they are likely to become aggressive.
Pray for every galgo, rescued or still on the streets.
Abandoned galgos and podencos everywhere, as well as dumped in killing stations. Can you imagine dumping this little cutie in a killing station?! There is a team trying to catch the podencos in Valencia, (mentioned in a previous post), one of the dogs has disappeared; and there are dozens wandering the streets of Murcia.
Galgos del Sol have been collecting some, and are trying to catch others – too frightened to be caught, so needing to be tempted into a trap. When are the hunters going to realise that the majority of Spaniards despise them for the bad press they give the country around the world. And when are the laws going to be applied.

Podenquita young and beautiful abandoned in the street. She is very affectionate and friendly, but not allowed to approach or pet. She wears a red collar, appears to have been lost or escaped from a hunter. We need foster care or adoption for her, since it is in an area of villas and we know that people are bothered by her presence. Also in danger of mistreatment or abuse. Please someone that has a space for her.
