Just makes me weep…..when oh when, will it end?! 🙁
Heartbreaking it should be the dammed hunters waiting to die
how I hate them for what they do
TypePad HTML Email
We all hate them for what they do, over breeding,
irresponsible ownership, mass abandonment with no concern for the results of
their actions; this applies too to everyone who breeds dogs and cats and then
abandons them. I hate all dog and cat breeders, but at least not all of
them are as irresponsible as the hunters.
Thanks for caring and for what you do for the
dogs.

Bonjour,
There has to be a change one day, we just have to
all keep plugging away and supporting the associations and volunteers, writing
and petitioning and protesting…….the difficulty is changing an attitude of
mind, a culture which condones animal cruelty under the excuse of
tradition.
Thanks for caring.

have any of these been rescued
Just to let you know many foreign people here in Spain have been trying to rescue these dogs but it seems they only want help from the spanish. The frustration going on behind the scenes with people from Belgium, holland and the UK that all live here in Spain and we can help , we can’t describe to you but many places have been offered but as we are not spanish we can’t have them so better they die then be helped by NON NATIVES! Sorry to put you in the picture but we are not always just up against the hunters here!
Scooby is working on getting the remaining galgos. will keep you posted.
What an appalling situation!! Thank you so much for letting us know what is going on, and even bigger thanks to all those dedicated, compassionate people who have been desperately trying to save these poor galgos. I pray that Scooby is successful……
I LOVE YOU ALL
Hi Beryl,
Is this perrera the one in Olivenza/Badajoz ??
I`ve tried to get some answers on facebook already concerning the rescueing of dogs directly from the Badajoz Perrera, because I think it would make more sense to support already existing animal-protection-organisations which have shelters/refugios there (like FEPAEX and so on) – instead of trying to save every single dog individually.
And there seem to occure problems with the cooperation between “SOS Perrera Badajoz” (on facebook) and people and orgas from abroad….
Which perrera in Badajoz is “SOS Perrera Badajoz”??
I guess it is the one in Olivenza ? Or just another killing-station ?
…or organisations like Scooby (see above), who can rescue dogs from there and prepare them for adoption abroad….
They make serious animal-protection in spain, educate children, care for their rescued animals and so on.
Why not supporting their work instead of buying/saving dogs from the killing-stations ?
If one adopts a dog from e.g. Scooby, Scooby can take another dog out of the perrera.
This is good animal-protection and really the only one which makes sense and will change something long-term

Bonjour Kersen
Olivenza perrera at Badajoz is a privately owned
one – you can read about it in my book From Heaven to Hell – The Story of the
Galgo Espanol. They dont allow people in, too many bad goings on for
people to find out about! Fepaex is Mariangeles who does amazing work in
Badajoz – she stayed overnight at my home here in France en route to Holland
with dogs to rehome. The Badajoz perrera is probably the municipal dog
perrera, most large towns and cities have them as, by law, the council is
supposed to be responsible for abandoned and stray animals. Until this
last couple of months, no one had publicised the Badajoz perrera, nor the
Zaragoza one, so I imagine SOS Badajoz is a rescue group or Protectora, I dont
know as they havent contacted me direct. Savings dogs from perreras is an
emotive subject….after all, why only save the galgos and podencos, why not the
others? I try to help other breeds as well, but the abandoned dog
situation throughout the whole of Europe is in a terrible state, even worse now
with the recession. Some of the rescue associations work on educating the
younger generations, but you have to remember that many of them are small,
reliant on volunteers who have to work for a living too, and who also have to
raise money – such as having a stall outside a supermarket to sell goods or ask
for donations. They have to sleep sometime too!
The problem for the galgos and podencos is that, if
they are not saved, then at the beginning of the next hunting season in
September, the hunters can go to a perrera and buy one or more back for the next
hunting season. And their suffering is repeated. Another problem is
– how many more homes can be found for galgos in Europe? Every year is
saturated by the hunters and their total disregard for anyone but
themselves. They dont consider the effect their lack of responsibility
has on the many Spanish who do care about animals, who care about the bad
reputation Spain has for animal welfare. The problem for Spain is the
hunters and those in power who do nothing to stop the annual holocaust – many of
whom are also hunters and who therefore look after their own
interests.
And every life saved is precious to that life – a
dog, cat, horse, child

Sos perrera badajoz are the volunteers that help at the municipal perrera. They have a Facebook page where they let people know what dogs are due to be destroyed and when. They cannot deal with offers to take these dogs only the officials at the perrera can do that, and they proved very difficult to deal with. The dogs featured in your article are all safe now,but of course there are now more due to be killed.

Bonjour
Thanks for your input. The officials who run
the perreras differ in their attitude to rescues/adoptions. Some do not
like the Internet publicity and refuse to let people in to take photos
etc. Others want to help; a couple of years ago I was contacted by one
official in a perrera who was willing to drive through Spain to the French
border to meet up with me, and bring 4 galgos on death row, if I would help
him. We just have to hope that the Badajoz officials dont stop the
volunteers going in, as no one is allowed in the Olivenza privately run perrera
in Badajoz. And lets remember that Mariangeles and Fepaex have been
working to help the Badajoz for many years.
