    PEN 5
ISLA. Female Galga. 70 cm. Date of entry 11-11-2020.

Why is she there, because she had the misfortune to be born a galga in Spain where the galgueros treat them as trash.

  • Galgo’s Rescue Almeria – please help build quarantine kennels

    Galgo’s Rescue Almeria appeal

It’s necessary to separate new abandoned dogs from the ones who are already saved. It’s important for new arrivals to stay for 2 weeks in a separate place so they can recover and be vaccinated. We already raised an amount for all the materials for one kennel ( concrete, stones, cement, floor- and wall tiles, iron works, roof, …..). So all help to build the second one will be welcome .

See a plan of the kennels and donate through Gofundme on this weblink.

  • Acorns are poisonous to dogs

Acorns are poisonous…often meadows are surrounded by acorns and if horses eat enough, they suffer. I didn’t know that some dogs might also eat acorns until I read this article.

31/10 – update – He `s much better. They have given him a blood transfusion and the internal bleeding has decreased.

  • Galgo’s Rescue Almeria need help with leishmania costs for 6 hounds

GAR have 6 hounds with leishmania treatment, 5 of them galgos and the 6th a podenco. Please help them by donating on their GoFundMe appeal on this weblink. They will be grateful for any amount.

  • Disposing of dog poop

If like me you have a few hounds, I’ve had 4 galgos at one time, down to 2 now and a podenca, then disposing of their poop can be a problem. A friend of mine with kennels uses a stack of old tyres, building them up one at a time to a tower. She covers the poop with soil and leaves and it eventually breaks down into compost.

Here’s a similar idea as well as several others.

  • Galga Arial with Galgo’s Rescue Almeria – having a tough time

    GAR Arial 400 20 10 2020
This lovely white galga arrived at Galgo’s Rescue Almeria at the end of September, with a huge growth on her belly. She was spayed and the hernia removed at the same time.

Unfortunately it didn’t heal well, as Sandy explains.

‘9th October – This morning we noticed that Arial’s wound was open again. We went straight to the clinic where she got immediately a first surgical procedure. The vet determined that the growths at the bottom of her belly had grown back a bit. So tomorrow a new procedure to remove the diseased tissue and re-stitch the wound again. Arial will have to stay at the clinic for a few days after the procedure to keep an eye on the wound.

20th October – Yesterday we visited Arial at the clinic. She already had 3 operations but the wound doesn’t seem to close properly. Our poor girl looks sad, it’s been a long time she’s in the clinic now. If the wound stops bleeding she can finally come home end of this week. Due to the severity of the wound and to prevent a possible infection, Arial will be taken care of in a home situation.

  • Galga Niko now well and off to a forever home

    GRA Niko 400 10 220
Do you remember Nico, the galga rescued in poor condition from a beach in Almeria. She has recovered well in the hands of Galgo’s Rescue Almeria and is now reserved for her forever home.

Sandy says, ‘This is Nico, she is a long-haired galgo of 3 years old. Nico came to GRA in very bad circumstances, she was skinny, bald on her ears and was covered in fleas / sign. She tested negative for Erlichia / Anaplasma and Filaria but positive for Leish. She already received treatment with Milteforan that is finished and is now 2 tablets twice a day. This amazing girl has been fully vaccinated, chip / European passport and sterilized. Nico has a sweet character and other dogs are doing fine.’

Hoping she has a long and happy life ahead of her.
