PLEASE SHARE: HOW TO MAKE AN OFFICIL COMPLAINT FOR ANIMAL ABUSE OR ABANDONMENT IN SPAIN
    MO SWATEK·FRIDAY, 30 JUNE 2017

Due to the complete denial by the authorities (politicians of all levels) of the massive existence of animal abuse in Spain, our only possibility to make a difference is to report ALL and each of the cases that we see.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of cases are reported exclusively on the internet/social media but not to the authorities like the Spanish animal welfare police SEPRONA or directly to court, and the result is obvious. As nobody reports, the official statistics don’t include any of the severe cases all of us find nearly daily. Neither are all the dogs that shelters without subsidies and private people collect daily in the Spanish streets considered in official statistics.

  • Galgos112 – rescuing a large galgo family in Jaen

Galgos 112 Mum 400 2Galgos 112 recently took on this new galgo family.

‘We asked for help to host the galgo puppies found in Jaén, now we tell you their story.

We got a request for help for a group of galgos who were abandoned almost a month in a village, were walking through the streets in the heatwave of more than 40º, no food or water, just what some neighbors gave them out of pity.

When volunteer Sara arrived in town, 3 Adult Galgos and four pups were found, the situation was bad, two of the pups were half dead and did not react, the other two were active but also in bad condition. They were easily caught two of the adults and the four Cubs, and without waiting any more they put them in the car and went to the veterinary clinic where they were treated with water, antidiarrheal and deworming for intestinal worms and Coccidia. They were also full of fleas. Even better, they began to eat.

  • Great Global Greyhound Walk, 11 6 2017

Great Global Greyhound Walk 400 2017A friend of mine organised a French one…here’s her report. ‘It was the Great Global Greyhound Walk today and I organised the one in France. My dear friends supported the walk and I asked for donations to be made to Pepis Dog Refuge. There were four Sighthounds, my rescue Greyhound Jack, Malva my rescue Galgo and Beryl brought Polar and Bracken. Friends joined in with their own dogs as well. We raised €55 today and some more has been promised. I will send via PayPal as soon as I know the full amount. Keep up the good work!’

In the photo – Claire is in pink with spaniel Stan, retired rescued greyhound Jack and black galga Malva from Scooby. I’m in blue on the right with cream boy Polar from Pepis and OH David is at the end with brindle galgo Bracken from Galgos del Sol.

  • Scooby – Open letter to animal protection organisations in Castille y Leon

Scooby Alma 400 6 2017Here’s a link to the Scooby News blog where Fermin asks that all animal protection associations in Castille y Leon work together to form a strong group to fight the maltreatment of animals there.

This stunning galga has been named Alma, saved from the Valladolid perrera. She has an old injury to her foreleg which was left to heal on its own! Scooby have also taken another galgo from the same perrera also with a broken foreleg and he is due to have an operation to try and repair it. They need help to pay for his vet care, along with all the other animals they recently rescued.

If you can’t have a dog or can’t adopt another one, how about a Virtual Adoption? Here are the details.

  • Beacon Dog Training – instructional videos and articles

That dog geek 400Not about galgos but about any dog. I take Polar to Obedience classes and a couple of weeks ago on the Club fb page was a video about a dog training club in Australia, where one of the proprietors is a paraplegic, which obviously involves some dog training different from non-disabled. Here is a link to their website, if anyone is interested in discussing the subject with Tom.

They also have several interesting videos, including this one on Training a Dog to obey in different situations, plus short articles with graphics.

  • Operation Chase – breaking into the illegal world of stolen galgos

Dead galgo A vila 400 6 2017This is a Google translation of the story of Operation Chase – and 81 galgos.
    :
Stolen dogs that were not good for hunting were abandoned or cruelly slaughtered.

As a result of the continuous complaints made by people and municipalities, especially the Comarca of the “Moraña” of Avila, personally received and through the Government Subdelegation, which were transmitted to the Civil Guard on the issue of poaching in that region and the theft of dogs, especially GALGOS, led to the start of specific surveillance and police investigations at the end of the summer of 2016.

The investigation was initiated by the Judicial Police Organic Unit and the SEPRONA of the Avila Command, within the police operation called ‘Chase’, the same ones coincided with others that, driven by Environmental and Animal Protection Organizations, carried out by the Seprona of the Commander of Madrid, the reason why it was decided to realize the investigations jointly.

  • From death row in Gesser perrera to home life in Switzerland

Gesser galga original 400In December 2012 I posted an appeal for help for some galgos in Gesser Perrera, Cadiz. The staff were leaving for Xmas holiday and putting down the dogs in the perrera. Here is the story and some delightful photos of one of the lucky ones, saved and now living a lovely life in Swizerland. Marianne tells her story.

‘We got her through Lavida “https://www.facebook.com/Tierschutz.LAVIDA/” that was the association, but the contact person in switzerland was “Jackys Hundehort”. I don’t remember the name of the spanish shelter where she came from to Switzerland. I just remember that the Spanish woman (who gave her the name Linda) was very caring. I met her at the airport in Zurich.’

Always lovely to read a happy ending. Enjoy these photos of Linda.

  • Update on Polar – looking into Turmeric

The results of Polar’s recent xray unsurprisingly showed calcification of his damaged leg joint bone and arthritis. So the option of an operation to insert a prosthesis joint is negative. Since the leg doesn’t bother him nor hinder him from chasing around with his galgo housemate Bracken, the decision is to leave well alone.

Having treated him so far with MSM, I’m now looking into moving on to Devil’s Claw, which I find successful in treating my aged horses and also my first greyhound, back in the 1990’s. I’ve also been recommended to look at Turmeric, for which a retired English greyhound is being successfully treated, belonging to a friend. She purchases the product, then freezes it in a coffee bean mould and adds the required dosage to the dog’s feed daily. This is the weblink to the Turmeric under the name Golden Paste, and the coffee bean mould.

Have any readers had experience of using Turmeric for their canine?
