Between Madrid & Valencia – Cuenca heartbreak for Pilar
One of the things which really angers me – and I know it angers the Spanish volunteers – is that the municipal councils really don’t care about the stray dog problem. They provide council killing stations, as well as the privately run ones like Olivenza in Badajoz. I’ve received a letter from a Dutch supporter, Anita, who recently spent a couple of weeks volunteering at the privately run shelter in Cuenca,in the middle of an area full of hunters, between Madrid and Valencia. Here’s what she wrote.
‘I volunteered in the Cuenca refuge for about 16 days and was really in shock the first days. There are so many dogs and they never come out of their kennels. Among the dogs are many many galgos, some of them are afraid but they are never aggressive.

Kim’s Animal Refuge – report on the rescue operation
You probably heard in the news about the wild fires in Southern Spain. On
31st August we received the terrible news that Kim’s Animal Rescue in
La Cala de Mijas had been badly affected. On the night 30th/31st August the rescue had to be evacuated. The volunteers
at the rescue worked tirelessly through the night to try to evacuate as many
dogs and cats as possible. The local police at 1 a.m in the morning closed off
all the roads leading to the rescue, saying it was too dangerous. The only way
to access the rescue was through the dried river-bed which covers an area at the
bottom of the valley. The helpers drove their cars along the dried river-bed to
get within 100 yards of the lower part of the rescue, the cattery. -
Kim’s Animal Refuge, Fuengirola, victim of the fires raging around Malaga
Kim’s Animal Shelter at Fuengirola was one of the refuges destroyed by the fires which raged around Malaga last week, destroying homes and everything in its path. Here’s a link to read about the shelter and their disaster appeal. All the animals at the shelter were saved but, as you can imagine, it will be a tremendous task to rebuild and re-equip the shelter for the future. Wishing everyone involved the best of luck.
