More publicity, from an Australian reader, about the atrocities perpetrated against the galgos in particular in Spain. Be warned, the photo is not pleasant.

Spanish holidays – help out at a dog shelter
Now the freezing snow and icy weather is behind us (hopefully) we can look forward to Spring and think about holidays. Many people like to do more than just sit on a beach, and Vivienne Wharton has some suggestions. She lives in the Ricote area of Murcia in eastern Spain and has become very involved in the plight of abandoned dogs. She has linked together many rescue associations and volunteers and even got involved in protesting at a bull fight last month!
Many shelters and refuges offer accommodation to people willing to help with caring for their animals and Vivienne is co-ordinating help in her area. You can read about the holidays here.

Milanuncious – buying a galgo in February after hunting has finished?
Thank you to Susannah Hollesch for posting this link on Save the Galgo on Facebook. For those of you who don’t use Facebook – and I only use it to publicise about the galgos and podencos! – this is a website on which hundreds of galgos are offered for sale, now hunting has finished. These include some of the ones which have already been dumped in killing stations etc. Now, unless these particular galgos are the best hunters or the best for breeding, why would anyone buy a galgo at this time of year from this website? And goodness knows what was done to the two galgos tail to tail – tied together? How unhappy they look.

Gesser Galgos – Pro-Galgo & Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert to the rescue
I’m pleased to be able to tell you all that Pro-Galgo and Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert have taken the latest batch of galgos at Gesser killing station, Jerez. You can see the photos of some of them here, by the fireside at Pro-Galgo. Sadly, as President of Pro-Galgo Mo Swatek says, their places will soon be taken up by dozens more.
‘We have taken 14 of the Gesser galgos and 20 went to Fundacion Benjamin
Mehnert near Seville. With other associations, a total of 48 galgos have been saved recently from Gesser.’Remember, they will all need forever homes. Please contact the associations direct on the links above, if you can help in any way, including donations for vet fees.
On the link above, you can also read the story of Fundacion Benjamin Mehnert rescuing dogs from a village of drug addicts.

Update on Toledo galga – Galgo Leku or Galgos 112?
Below is an update on the Toledo galga with the eye problem, which was posted on my Save the Galgo page on Facebook. I am uncertain from the translation whether Galgos 112 or Galgo Leku have taken the galga (I think Galgos 112 but there is no news of her on their website) but, either way, she is with an organisation which will ensure she has veterinary treatment.
Many of you ask for updates on what happens to the appeals I post on Galgo News and this is an illustration of how difficult it is for me, if the associations who take the dogs do not themselves send me news.

Closing down a bad perrera – creates more problems than it solves
Closing down a perrera does not solve any problems, it simply creates more problems. Many perreras keep the dogs and cats on death row in reasonably clean conditions, with food and water. They are also happy to allow adoptions of the animals, to give them a second chance of life. Other perreras keep the animals in atrocious conditions, as we know from publicity on the Internet.
At the end of the day, improving the conditions for animals in the bad perreras should be the priority, not closing them down. I posted a link to an appeal organised by a third party to close down Mairena perrera but stated that I did not agree with it. Comments further down the post also confirmed that other people agreed there are preferable solutions.

Update on the rescue of the gypsy galgos in Murcia
This is the latest update on the 74 galgos in Murcia which belonged to a gypsy who was denounced. At the current time, about 28 have been rescued. The gypsy then hid the other dogs.
‘We will have a better idea after this weekend of the number saved as the gypsy had moved the dogs he hid back onto his property and Seprona visited again and told him he had to get rid of another 21. So Galgos del Sol and 2 other associations are going back on Saturday to collect more dogs.
