Here’s a fascinating story from Aanifeira, an animal rescue association in Portugal. Dogs feel the suffering of human beings, especially those who they recognize as their owners? Drs. Karine Silva and Liliana de Sousa, two researchers from the Department of Behavioral Sciences at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences in Porto, Portugal consider that they do, but underline a lack of experimental studies and scientific discussion. Read on.

Ban hunting with galgos – a virtual demonstration to join – my comments
This virtual demo has been set up by Barbara LeFranc of Le Bulletin des Levriers, to demand the banning of hunting with galgos. Not sure how it works, see Barbara’s comment below. It’s in French, but don’t let that stop you voting if you want to.

Slovenia Sighthound World Auction started 29th August – raising funds for Scooby
There’s an auction running this week on Facebook organised by Slovenia Sighthound World to raise funds in response to the Scooby appeal. Whilst the information is not in English, you can quite clearly see the beautiful items on offer. Larisa of SSW says
‘If people from abroad want to bid and need more information about the auction or the items offered, in English language, if they contact us on galgo@hrtjisvet.org and we will gladly assist them. Information about the payment and delivery will be discussed individually, after they place an offer. Payment for the items will be via paypal and the items will be sent via DHL or other post services, but the postal charges must be paid by the people to successfully bid the item. If you need some other information, please email us.’

23 galgos from Scooby to France – Levriers sans Frontiers in action
Here’s a nice bit of news for 5 galgos in the Scooby shelter – they are going to France to Levriers sans Frontiers for foster and adoption. Fermin chose 5 galgos who most needed to travel to France. Thanks to Odile Brochot, president of LsF. And here they are. Scooby now tells me that, in all, 23 galgos from Scooby going to France to Levriers sans frontieres. They had reserved 18 galgos and then Odile Brochot, the president from LSF, asked Fermin to choose 5 galgos who needed most to leave the shelter, so Fermin chose the 5 below, so that makes a total of 23 galgos leaving in September for France.

Saving Galgos in Argentina – Adopta un Galgo en Argentina
Thanks to Valarie Woolf for bringing to my attention an association formed last year in Argentina – saving galgos. I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised, a Spanish outpost; last winter I posted a photo of two men laughing, with a hung dog between them.
Here’s the weblink, you’ll have to use a translator to read what they do.

Spanish galgos are already being stolen for hunting next month!
Everyone in Spain either working in shelters/refuges or who has adopted a galgo – be warned, there is news already of loose galgos in Murcia being taken by the gitanos/galgueros ready for hunting starting next month….galgos in unattended shelters -(the majority of shelters don’t have anyone there overnight) are particularly at risk – and if the thieves are challenged, they are likely to become aggressive.
Pray for every galgo, rescued or still on the streets.
