  • Podenco Oco desperately needs a forever home – please adopt him

Oco[2] with Charl 250 Charl is appealing for someone to offer this sweet podenco a forever home.

‘This is Oco. He was rescued must be 3 months ago, when we first went to Estepona to see about the galga, with Encarnis trap from DDEVIDa we caught him, .. he is 4. He was owned by a hunter so who knows where he was kept, and then “given” so say, to someone a friend! To me that says he was on the street all that time, .. he is so cute, loving cheeky, he still has some fear and can yelp when you shout or move fast. He is castrated, vaccinated and negative in leishmaniosis, good with children, cats fine, he lived on the street with one, bless it.

He really needs a good knowledgeable home. When you stroke him he closes his eyes. he is caring and wants to be with you, he won’t sleep on a bed yet. He is in a foster home but the husband is allergic to the dog hair. He so deserves a good loving home.’

  • Help costs of medication for two old boys – saved by Amigos de los Galgos, fostered in France

A while ago I appealed for help to pay the ongoing medical costs which Joanna Simm is bearing for two galgos she has been fostering for a couple of years, and which no one wanted to adopt.

Here is a message from Joanna. ‘Please can you add a big thank on Galgo News to a lovely lady from Tailends, who kindly sent me loads of the heart meds for Quijote (aka Luiz). I think it is amazing that the help came from a charity who do such demanding and incredible work themselves. Bless them! love joanna x’

Thank you to Suzie Scott and Tailends, for helping Joanna. And the poor old boys will continued to need medication for the rest of their lives. If you can help, please help Joanna.

  • Galga Sofie, eating on her own – GRIN appeal for donations to pay for veterinary care

Latest update on Sofie, the galga which some Spanish bastard smashed her jaw and seriously broke it! And here you will see her eating on her own – albeit with her jaw clamped by metal rods – with her friend podenca Rosie trying to taste some too.

Silvia says ‘A short video of Sofie and Rosi :-)) Sofie has better character now, she is nice when crazy Rosi is jumping around or trying to take her food, she doesn`t try to bite anymore :-)). Sofie is thin but gaining a little weight, she starts to eat dry food alone. She needs to be in the clinic till they can take the “metal” out.’

GRIN still desperately need donations to pay for all the veterinary care for Sofie, as she is still, many weeks after being rescued, residing in the vet’s clinic. Donate viat the GRIN website, Paypal.

  • A revised letter about the unspeakable hell of Avila, Asturia, Spain – not a holiday for dogs and cats

Further to my post today about the fact that the horrendous conditions for dogs and cats at the shelter at Aviles has not made one iota of movement, this lovely reader of Galgo News has put together this letter, and if anyone will translate it into Spanish – not google or babelfigh – then that will be even better. And a gros bisous to Cindy for doing this.

    Senor Ignacio Martinez
    Public Affairs,
    Aviles, Spain

    protocolo@ayto-aviles.es

    Dear Senor Martinez,

There are films on Youtube showing horrific conditions in an animal shelter in Aviles. People all over the world are viewing this and people are emailing one another, and soon will be contacting you and your mayor, Pilar Varela Diaz, regarding these deplorable conditions. Animals suffering like this will deter tourists from coming to your beautiful municipality. Something needs to be done as soon as possible.

A new shelter and humane treatment of these animals is a must. Please go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh7A1B2-vg4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh7A1B2-vg4″>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh7A1B2-vg4a> and see for yourself how awful it is.

Please forward this email to your mayor, Pilar Varela Diaz, and let her know that she will likely be receiving many other letters, emails and phone calls about this terrible shelter. Please ask her to do everything in her power to see that a humane shelter, and decent treatment of animals ensues.

Also, since you are hoping many of us will come to visit Aviles, please become involved yourself in ending the horror these animals are experiencing. Please work to see that a proper shelter is built and that the animals are humanely treated. How animals are treated says a great deal about a culture.

Thank you sir for forwarding this to your mayor.

Your name, the country you live in,

Pilar Varela Diaz, Mayor of Aviles Calle Jovellanos 1 Aviles Asturias Spain Dear Mayor Varela, It has recently come to my attention that there is widespread animal neglect taking place in a ‘shelter’ at Aviles, Asturia.

As one ventures closer to the ‘shelter’, an overwhelming stench assaults your sense of smell, an omen of the horrid conditions where the eighty dogs and cats are forced to live. A sign at the entrance warns that “No animals are picked up or delivered’.

Dogs and cats barely survive in this hell of Avilés, sharing their space with tons of rubble and dirt, with rats, in cages consisting of pallets and mattresses. These animals are subjected to constant confinement, living among their own faeces, with no sanitation, never leaving the dirt in which they live, condemned to share accommodation with rats and fleas that move between the garbage around them.

When one approaches, the desperate barks from these suffering animals becomes deafening, People in the neighbourhood know about these deplorable conditions, yet when they wish to investigate they are always stopped by Miluce, a ‘middle-aged woman’, who is causing the suffering.

A complaint has been lodged in the Court of Aviles by El Refugio against the woman in charge of the ‘shelter’. These charges state ‘ “The animals are housed in a massive and uncontrolled environment, with a variety of breeds and their state of health shows an abysmal lack of food, poor hygiene, lack of standard veterinary care, unsanitary conditions, surrounded by faeces and urine, among rodents and other vermin (fleas …), causing a risk not only for animals but also for public health. We believe that these facts can now be considered criminal.’

Yet the woman claims she maintains a ‘terrific’ facility which is all to often used as a cover-up and is never the case. The animals are being kept near the district of La Luz Aviles in the road that joins the A-8 in this neighbourhood.

It is known that this constant state of neglect and abuse has gone on for at least ten years, allegedly resulting in death in some cases, because the facilities are inappropriate for the care of the animals housed there.

Won’t you please investigate this situation? Surely you do not wish to see this cruelty continue in the Municipality of Avilés.

It is clear that the Municipality of Avilés is in dire need of a proper shelter, where animals may live in clean, humane conditions.

And you should know that we will not go away. The world is watching this information and video and there will be a lot of people who will not come to Asturias because they know the truth of the city beyond the lovely beaches and historic buildings.

They are aware of the hell of the ‘garbage of abandoned dogs’ in Avila and that the Mayor,in 10 years, has done NOTHING ABOUT IT.

    Thank you very much

  • Avila, Asturias – no change – join the campaign, write a letter to the Mayor

Aviles, Asturias 8 190 You will be horrified to learn that, two months on since El Refugio.org denounced the deplorable ‘shelter’ at Avila, Asturias in northern Spain, there is absolutely no change in the sickening incarceration for over 80 dogs and cats. El Refugio reports that the Mayor Pilar Valera, has done absolutely nothing atall, has taken absolutely no action!

On 13th March 2010 Court No 3 of Avila initiated a penal procedure (denuncia) against the woman owning the shelter, citing the deplorable ‘buildings’ in which more than 80 dogs and cats existed.n which “they live” piled-up more than eighty dogs and cats. We have to help these poor animals, many of whom are ill and die in these conditions.

  • Urgent Appeal from SOS Galgos, Barcelona – help their galgos

Anna Clements, Director of SOS Galgos in Barcelona, has sent out this urgent message.

    Dear Friends,

Have you heard the exciting news? SOS Galgos has been kindly given use of a great location in Esplugues de Llobregat, exclusively to aid in the adoption of our dogs that are desperately in need. It is an amazing opportunity to create a space for adoptions and events that will benefit each and every dog that we save. However, we have this space for 6 months only! So what does this mean? We must act fast!!

What is our plan? For the next 6 months we plan to advertise ‘Adoption hours’ at this new ‘Adoption clinic’ for members of the public to come and see many galgos at once. This should increase greatly the number of galgos adopted. We know that without the help and support of you this gift of space cannot be a success.

What can you do to help?
