Join the Fight – Stop Greyhound Racing in Logan, Australia

UPDATE— Greyhound Crusaders/SWAP team UK have written to the Mayor of Logan and all the Logan councillors and we have been informed by one of the Logan councillors that
Quote
“I need to point out that it is not a decision of Council. This facility is being developed and implemented by the QLD State Government. The only involvement of council was that we voted to give up the trusteeship of the land which was and is owned by the state”.

PETITION TO SIGN AND WORLDWIDE PROTESTS NEEDED NOW

SIGN THE PETITION HERE– WORLDWIDE SIGNATURES NEEDED PLEASE

The Albert & Logan News recently reported that a $25 million greyhound racing track is all but approved to be constructed in Logan City Council.

Greyhound racing is a dreadfully callous industry, with little regard for the animals involved. Every year, thousands of pups are bred in the hope that they will be the next big winner. The vast majority of these puppies are ultimately ‘put down’ because they are not fast enough. The Australian greyhound racing industry and other callous individuals are also supplying an enormous number of ex racing greyhounds to universities, veterinary schools and vivisection laboratories for the purpose of experimentation and dissection. These helpless and frightened dogs are being repaid for their years of loyalty by being tortured through unnecessary and painful experiments and finally killed and dissected.

Those that do survive are generally penned up in kennels or tiny yards (as small as 3sqm) for most of their racing lives – and can be exercised for as little as 20mins a day.

If you have a minute to spare, please sign this petition…Your time is greatly appreciated.

Sincerest thanks,

Kisha

We, the undersigned, recognise greyhound racing as a cruel practice and fiercely oppose the construction of a greyhound track in Logan, QLD. It is requested that Greyhounds Queensland and Logan City Council examine other alternatives due to undeniable harm, not only to animals, but to Logan families also.

Bullshit. Greyhounds are loved by all that know them. They are great pets and racing greyhounds are looked after better than a lot of kids in the world. The boards here have put regulations in place to control breeding, and to keep track of what happens to dogs once they finish racing.
They spend thousands in GAP to place them if they are not good enough or finish racing.
Why dont troublemakers like you worry about puppyfarms breeders who send hundreds of pups overseas aged 6 weeks. There must be a lot of pets in china/japan/korea.
As i have worked in animal transport i have seen these poor pups over 100 at a time going into the airport.
If all people loved and cared for their dogs like most greyhound people it would be better world for animals.

What a waste of precious time!!! Are you guys aware that you are petitioning against greyhounds in Australia….not in Spain. In Australia greyhounds are better looked after and loved than a lot of children. Have you ever been to a race meeting here? Have you ever visited a greyhound at home? In Australia racing greyhounds do not live in small kennels at a race track, they live at the owner or trainer’s premises, in the winter they wear warm coats and in the summer the air con is turned on just for them. They were born to run and they love to run and race, visit a race meeting and watch the trainers kissing and cuddling their dogs and watch the dogs just itching to race.
There must be some real causes out there you people can put your time and energy into, something that will make a difference, something you can be proud of and be able to tell your children “I made a difference”.
Please let me know when you start a legitimate petition that will in some way ease the suffering of people in the world and I will be one of the first to sign it.

Hear hear!! This is the sort of truth that the do gooders/anti greyhound racing people don’t want the world to know, because it doesn’t suit their agenda to grab more donation money by spreading false propandga about how racing greyhounds are treated in Australia.

    Hi
Thank you for commenting on this post. Sadly,
it is not bullshit, otherwise there would still not be hundreds of stories about
maltreated greyhounds. I agree hundreds of them are well loved in caring
homes, but many are not, as illustrated by the current action against the Zig
Zag kennels. There are owners and trainers who keep their dogs in suitable
conditions, but there are many others who do not. Just as there are some
galgueros who keep their Spanish galgos in decent conditions, but the majority
do not. If all greyhounds were loved, as you say, then there would be no
need for Greyhound Action and Greyt Exploitations – to name but 2 – to
    exist.
If Im a troublemaker, then that means Im making
an impression! And for you, its easy to sling insults at people who try
to change attitudes to animal cruelty. Have you considered personally
joining the protests about animal farms, puppy mills – joining protests about
the conditions in which animals are transported – since you say you were an
animal transporter. Shame on you for contributing to the suffering and
stress of any animal being transported.
I agree that something needs to be done about
animal cruelty in the Far East; sadly greyhounds from Australia which are no
longer required end up being shipped there.
Personally, I would make a blanket ban on every
single dog, cat, horse, donkey breeder, for a start. They are in it for
the money only. To them an animal is a means of making some money, just
like a galgo is viewed simply as a hunting tool by the galgueros.
I suggest you put your feelings as expressed here
into more useful effect by joining protest groups against puppy farms and animal
    transportation.

    Hi
Thanks for your post. Have a read of my reply
to the previous post. We are very well aware that we are protesting on behalf of
greyhounds – and it follows that what happens to greyhounds also happens to
galgos. Do you know what happens to galgos?
Its good to read that greyhounds in Australia are
kept in decent conditions. And yes, its a beautiful sight to see a
greyhound or galgo at full stretch, running free. You dont mention what
happens to the greyhounds when they break a leg whilst racing, or are too old to
race any more, or what happens to the dozens of greyhound puppies who arent
suitable for racing – as not all greyhounds will race, as I well
    know.
Also, another point to consider is that, very
often, people who bet on greyhound racing are people who can ill afford to spend
the money – you must be aware that gambling can become a serious addiction for
    some people.
I suggest to you, as I have suggested to the
previous comment, that you put your energy into supporting a cause to protest
about, say, child pornography (almost on your doorstep using kids in
Thailand!), domestic violence. Start your own cause on Care
    2.
In the meantime, dont criticise those whoDO
try to make a difference – in this case to the lives of thousands of dogs in
Spain – I am very proud of what Galgo News has achieved in the 3 years since it
was launched, and my kids are very proud of me.
I bet you cant say the same about yourself at this

As I said to Sue Burley – you dont say what

If I was a galgo I would not in a million years ever think Beryl was a trouble maker. In fact she would be like a galgo goddess and I think galgos all over the world would be thanking her. The amount of galgos she has saved and helped re-home is countless. I dont know enough about Australia’s practise with galgos to comment on that at the moment but again I would be interested to know what happens to the little ones who dont make it onto the track and what happens when they can’t run anymore.
Sue – If Beryls passion is greyhounds then why does she have to start a petition to ease the suffering of people to suit you. If this is your passion then you are free to start a campaign for this. Beryls passion is greyhounds therefore she has every right to campaign for this. You can not dictate to someone what they must campaign for just because your opinion is different. We are free to choose for ourselves what we believe in.

Tens of thousands of greyhounds are disposed of by the racing industry in Australia some 25,000 are born each year.
Of these dogs only about half reach naming and training age. Thousands of puppies and young dogs are routinely killed.
Many thousands more will fail to chase, will not be fast enough or will be injured while racing and will also be destroyed.
Those that go on to race will have short careers. They will finish racing between the ages of 2 and 4.
… do I need to go on. SHAME ON AUSTRALIA!

Hi Simon, just reading that article as well. Here is the rest incase some peopple can’t get the link.
The average life span for a greyhound is 12 years although only a handful see out their natural lives. Less than 500 a year go through the adoption programme.
The industry has no accountability for the countless thousands of dogs that disappear each year; no one knows what happens to them.
Up to 1000 a year are exported to Asia for racing, countries such as Korea and China. These are countries known for their huge illegal trade in dog meat for human consumption.
Many greyhounds are seeing out their days in the confinement of Laboratories and Universities and are being subjected to cruel experiments.
Many greyhounds are trained using live animals (baiting) such as rabbits and possums even though this practice is illegal.
There is no accountability for these dogs .All greyhound pups are recorded and ear tattooed at birth and yet after this there is no record of them or where they go.

As an Aussie currently living in the UK, involved with animal rescue, past owner of an ex-racing greyhound (and a galgo), I think my fellow-countrymen are either being extremely naive or economical with the truth in their comments. In any country where greyhound racing exists there are owners and trainers who treat their dogs well and care for their ongoing welfare but to suggest that this is true across the board and that all greyhounds born into the Australian racing industry have a wonderful life and a jolly retirement is frankly rubbish and not sustained by the figures available. These indicate just under 25,000 greyhound puppies born each year in Australia but fewer than 13,000 are “named” annually ie given a racing name and registered. Greyhound litters average 8 in number, in the UK 6 of these go on to be registered, in Australia the number is 4 at it’s highest, in some States dropping below this number, so what has happened to the litter-mates of the puppies that actually make it to registration? Not to mention the dogs who are registered then fail to make the grade once they start racing, and those that die on the race-track or are put down as a result of injuries incurred. Based on the number of recorded deaths at just one UK race-track multiplied by the number of tracks in this country, this is up to 1000 dogs per year. I fail to see why this would be any different in Australia, injuries occur because of the design of tracks, long straights so the punters can see the dogs at full stretch, tight corners and the speed at which the dogs are travelling combine to make this inevitable. And please spare us the suggestion that the racing industry cares for these dogs. Friends adopted a retired racer who only survived by sheer chance, the owner told the trainer if the dog failed to place at his next race, he wanted him put down. The dog ran last, the trainer took him to the track vet to be PTS and the vet told him he would have to bring the dog back the following week, as THE FREEZER WAS ALREADY FULL, there was no space for another dog! Fortunately the trainer found a rescue willing to take the dog in the meantime. Greyhound racing is a multi-million pound/dollar business with dogs being bred as fodder for an industry that discards them if they fail to make the grade in the first place or become too slow as they age. I find the comments about Australian greyhounds being ‘treated better than some kids’ completely bizarre – what kids, where – in Australia or some third world country – and in any case how is this relevant? As for ‘True Greyhound Lover’ perhaps your comments would carry more weight if you had the balls to lodge these under your name rather than hiding behind a pseudonym. The facts are indisputable, greyhound racing costs the lives of thousands of dogs a year, whether in the UK or in Australia, and is this really acceptable in any civilised country? As for Beryl Brennan being a trouble-maker – long may it continue – get out your big wooden spoon Beryl and keep stirring!!

I am not naive to think that these bad things do not happen to greyhounds, unfortunately all over the world we have to see humans suffering in appalling conditions, wild animals being caged for entertainment, slow greyhounds mainly put down if no home can be found for them, etc etc however what I am protesting against are those ‘do gooders’ who think they are saving greyhounds by trying to close down greyhound racing tracks!! None of us greyhound lovers WOULD even be angry with people that want to take action against people that put down greyhounds willy nilly left right center, because us true greyhound lovers can’t bear to see these beautiful dogs mistreated or over raced or over bred with either. But to categoratically demand that greyhound racing be BANNED, that is just plain evil and wrong. Horse racing and greyhound racing have existed for thousand of years even back in Roman times.
To the questions about what happens to these greyhounds that break their legs/or are badly injuried on the racetracks or at home in their yards, some are saved and thousands of dollars spent on putting plasters on their legs (even driving owners to poor houses to do so) because these people LOVE their greyhounds so much they want to show their gratitude and loyalty to these animals. However yes there are many that are unfortunately put down humanely, mainly to stop their suffering and some due to being unable to afford the veterinary costs of operations etc.
As for slow dogs… yes we agree there are too many of them and a lot are put down humanely however many are adopted out or sold/sent overseas for further racing/new pet homes.
We do not dispute that there are unscruptulous cruel trainers who have a high turnover of dogs but to label us all decent trainers in the same basket just upsets us as we are trying to make life better for the greyhounds!
    Thank you 😉

Wherever there are galgos and greyhounds there is a dark world, no matter the country no matter the place. Aussie is as much at fault for exploiting greyhounds as any other country. The brutality remains fact.. it is proven that the statistics in greyhound racing are high in sluaghters. UK, Aussie, and in many a country. Those who think otherwise, why do you think tracks have been closed down? Its not out of good treatment! greys like to run and play, it doesnt mean you have to make money from them. those here on this chat.. who seem to agree with racing, you must either be breeders or gamblers on racing. the fact that its “history” does not make it right. Money should be made from human decisions and not from those who cannot decide for themselves.
Its seemingless to insult and slam Beryl as she does a great job, and you those who do not understand the work done for the Spanish galgo and other greys worldwide should investigate perhaps a little more.. its not hard to see the numbers of abuse. You may like racing, it does not make it right. Talking of donations.. well if you were the ones picking up the pieces of greys and galgos with their necks hung with wire.. legs broken, toes ripped, then maybe you would understand. Its basic by stopping racing and hunting with greyhounds and galgos, then we can manage the situation better, albeit it may go dark, but at least we can remedy a huge part of this abuse. Just have a browse through some sites and you will see for yourself.
Be great to think you could put your “passion” towards the plight against dog and cat theft in Asia and the brutalities there as oppose to supporting cruelty. The bad out ways the good i am afraid so its best left by shutting the industry down! unless you would like to see how it is for real.. fighting to save a galgo or a greyhound, you may just have too much of a lump in your throat for words and an almighty change of opinion. Until then.. Beryl keep up the good work, the galgos/greyhounds all over need help! Amen to that!

No Beryl Suzie is not speaking from experience, she states she is an Aussie living in the UK and is involved in animal welfare there, not here. The so called facts and figures she and others are quoting are taken directly from anti-racing propaganda websites (read one, read them all, they all copy each other’s articles).
I wholly agree that when animal cruelty is involved something should be done and I applaud those taking action in other countries to stop the obvious cruel and sometimes horrific treatment of greyhounds and galgos. BTW my understanding is that a galgo is a cross-bred greyhound normally created when a greyhound is left wandering the streets and breeds with another breed, or sometimes bred on purpose for some other activity. In Australia greyhounds do not wander the streets, on the rare occasion one should escape from its owner’s property it is taken to a dog pound who immediately contact the greyhound authority with the ear-brands of the dog and it is returned. We do not have galgos in Australia. Of course there have been isolated cases of greyhound cruelty in Australia but the people involved are brought to task.
And finally Beryl in answer to your questions:-
    1. What happens when a greyhound breaks its leg whilst racing.
The majority of greyhounds who have a career ending injury are taken to a Vet and treated and either kept by the owner or placed on the Greyhound Adoption Program, some of them are pts but in Australia thankfully this practice has become far less than it has been in the past.
    2. When its too old to race.
Many become their owner’s house pets, others are put on the Greyhound Adoption Program and yes some are pts.
    3. To the hundreds of puppies who dont make it onto the racetrack.
    As above.
Yes of course some greyhounds are pts, I make no claim that we are perfect in Australia but allowing any greyhound to suffer would be a rarity here. Much has changed in recent years to make greyhound owners accountable for their dogs, when a greyhound is pts for example it must be humanely euthanised by a Veterinary Surgeon and a certificate from the VS together with the dog’s papers must be returned to the Greyhound Authority. In years past greyhounds were shot or euthanised by far from humane methods as they still are in some countries, but things have changed a lot here and as I said previously cases of greyhound cruelty are rare now and it is the person committing the cruelty who has the problem whether it be with a greyhound or any other breed.
Again I applaud anyone taking up the cause for cruelty to man or beast of any kind but I abhor those who print false information to further their cause, they lose all credibility.
If any of you posting on this protest know of any cruelty currently happening in Australia please post it here or have Beryl forward your e-mail to me and I will certainly take immediate action. From some of the responses posted on here I expect a flood of e-mails, let’s see how many I get.

At least in Australia greyhounds are luckier than in other countries, for they are not factory kenneled at the racetrack with one trainer in charge of hundreds.
Here in Australia there are hundreds of hobby family trainers who train greyhounds simply for the love of the animal, they are certainly not in it for the money or gambling. I am in one of the hobby trainer/breeder basket, I race and breed greyhounds (although I do not breed more than one litter every few years, as I do not believe in oversupplying the industry with too many greyhounds that may end up unwanted/too slow)and have done so for the past 25 years and so have my parents and my relatives for over 50 years.
Many hobby greyhound trainers even have their greyhounds live inside the house with them for their kids to spoil and be part of the family.
That’s why we are the Lucky Country. We have freedom of speech, we have freedom to race our greyhounds where we think they will be best suited to, we don’t have to race them if we don’t feel they are happy or are feeling a bit off colour.

Thank you for taking immediaite action Sue, look forward to the results. As you are so keen to tackle cruelty there in Australia I will certainately dig out more cases for you to report and hopefully prosecute with your immediate action. Thank You. we all await on the facts surrounding poor Kamaksan.

The only people interested in keeping racetracks open is those people making money from forcing these dogs to race. Why dont you get your running pants on and race yourself instead of forcing those who can’t speak to do it. They can’t speak for themselves you make decisions for them. Because of greyhound racing thousands die … FACT. Hope you sleep well at night and hope your pockets are full of cash.

There are loads of cruelty cases from Australia documented, I will dig some out also and pass to Sue to take action. Thanks Sue. It would hard for us to take on living in countries far away but as you are there you can stuck right in and tackle these cases. Do you have a private email that I could send to you photos and documented cases of greyhound cruelty in Australia for you to take on?

Lorna Edwards reports from the Herald
When a whimpering, dying greyhound was found buried alive in wasteland outside Hobart late last month, it ignited a storm of outrage. The dog had been left to die under a sheet of tin in a bush dumping ground. One of its ears had been brutally hacked off to hinder identification and the remains of other greyhounds were found nearby. The greyhound racing fraternity pronounced its disgust, claiming the incident was a “one-off” committed by a rogue element “outside greyhound racing”.
The Tasmanian RSPCA vowed to trace and prosecute the owner, but animal rights campaigners accuse greyhound racing of being the real killer.
They say the incident is common in an unethical industry that routinely disposes of a massive number of dogs each year and have called for Australia to ban the sport. Greyhound racing is banned in six states of America and South Africa.
The industry estimates that 15,000 greyhounds are bred in Australia each year (activists say the true figure is 25,000) to feed a sport that generates $25 million a week, through 95 clubs holding more than 4000 meetings each year. Australia’s greyhound racing industry is the third largest in the world behind the US and Ireland.
For greyhounds, it’s a life of harsh realities. By two years old, many are deemed too slow to race and are discarded. Those that are successful eventually succumb to injury or are washed up by the age of three.
“They target the greyhound racing industry but the horseracing industry has issues,” says Geoff O’Connor, the chief executive of Greyhounds Australasia.
“Anything to do with dogs becomes emotive. Where do you think the horses end up?”
But industry figures are less comfortable talking about the growing number of dogs sent to Asia. The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service does not keep figures on greyhound exports but racing industry insiders believe hundreds are sent to Asia every year.
The export trade has caused the London-based animal rights group Greyhound Action International to set its sights on Australia. The group’s international co-ordinator, Raven Haze, told the Herald that dogs sent to Asia are sold for food, hung by their jaws and beaten to tenderise their meat, and later skinned alive and roasted with blowtorches.
She has led protests against the industry at Australia House in London. “The Australian public are largely unaware of the cruelty inflicted on greyhounds as I am sure if they knew the true facts about greyhound racing they would not support it,” she says.
……………….. Hi Sue, could you follow up if the owner of the greyhound with his ear hacked off was caught and prosecuted. If not I assume you will be doing so as you stated. More to follow. Thanks.

Sue, Kamaksan has been documented alot in the publicity over greyhound racing. Here is just one site where it is documented.

  32. Simon avatar
    Simon

Hi Sue, you do not need to follow this one up but I just wanted to say if greyhounds are treated better than children in Australia then I feel very sorry for the kids.
THE trainer of Go Bronco, the $10,000 greyhound which died after being left in a car without water for 14 hours, has been charged in relation to the animal’s death, after police allegedly discovered that he abandoned the vehicle after a traffic accident in the inner city.
Police said Terry Darragh ditched his Holden Commodore with Go Bronco caged in the back in Boyce Street, Glebe, after colliding with a bus about 10.20pm last Saturday. He is said to have then fled, leaving Go Bronco without food or water.
Police said Darragh falsely reported to Blacktown police at 8.30am the next morning that the Commodore had been stolen.
Go Bronco was not discovered until 11.30am suffering extreme dehydration, heat exhaustion and a temperature of 43 degrees.
The dog died at Annandale Animal Hospital on Wednesday night as a direct result of the extended exposure.
Late last night a police spokesman confirmed that Darragh had been charged with animal cruelty, negligent driving, failing to stop after an accident and making a false statement to police.
A source from the Wentworth Park dog track, where Go Bronco had raced earlier on Saturday evening, told the Herald that Darragh had been drunk.
It is understood that after leaving the track Darragh went to the Friend In Hand Hotel on Cowper Street, Glebe, and drank more.
Darragh told police and the Herald that he had stopped at the hotel for dinner and had then discovered his car had been stolen.
But one of the hotel’s managers told the Herald yesterday the restaurant was closed at the time, and police will allege that Darragh’s claims were false.

Sue, please sign above. This petition explains what happens when greyhounds are surplus to requirements in Australia. They get sent to Asia where they are hooked up alive by their jaws and tortured for hours to make their meat more tender ready for eating. If they are not lucky enough to experience that luxury (as you so call the life of the australian greyhound) they get used in labs for vivisection and experiments. Please take action immediately as you said you would as this is extreme cruelty for thousands of Australian geryhounds. For those that say your greyhounds are better treated than your children then I am completely gobsmacked at what Australia has become. Sue please educate yourself on the realities of what is happening in your country and stop being so ignorant.

Sue, can you define the word RARE please. If thousands of Australian greyhounds surplus to requirements are being to sent to Asia for the most evil death possible how on earth can you define greyhound cruelty as rare. I can’t believe when this is happening you have the cheek to say greyhound is down to the owner. NO, they are beng packed up in bulk and sent to hell. They be being tortured to death in Asia but it is Australia that is sending them there. I never knew about this untill reading through all this. I am shocked.

Interesting that Sue Burley apparently knows so much about my history; I am involved in animal rescue in this country but also was in Australia. As for repeating propaganda from anti-greyhound racing websites, I don’t frequent these but am happy to admit I don’t like greyhound racing because I’ve seen the outcome for the dogs. For anyone interested who wants to do any research there’s a wealth of information available from various sources like the Greyhound & Breeding Racing Database, RPSCA and University of Liverpool surveys and so on about the number of dogs coming into and being discarded by the industry. Then there’s the newspaper exposes about the dark side of the industry, we have The Times to thank in the UK for their under-cover reporting on this and the Herald-Sun in Victoria for exposing the sale of greyhounds from municipal pounds and from owners and breeders to the research industry. It’s impossible to suggest that all these various sources have some sort to axe to grind about the industry and are motivated by wanting to see it end. Sue Burley’s answers to Beryl’s questions are all so vague – the ‘majority’ of injured dogs are treated and kept by their owners, ‘most’ dogs that are too old to race become housepets with their owners, or dogs in both categories go into an adoption scheme. These statements aren’t substantiated in any way – sorry wasn’t that what the anti-racing activists were being accused of??

Tina this is where you are all so ill informed and mislead by those websites. There has never been a greyhound named Kamaksan registered in Australia. The picture shows a dog wearing a blue rug with the number 5 on it, nowhere in Australia do greyhounds race with a blue rug with number 5 on it, racing rugs are uniform all over Australia and the blue rug is number 4 and the number 5 rug is yellow.
I am still waiting for the flood of reports on any cruelty to any greyhound currently occurring in Australia and as I have said I will happily report it.

  39. True Greyhound Lover avatar
    True Greyhound Lover

Did you witness this atrocity, Tina?? Because I find it hard to believe that anybody would leave a dog to just die after a race.
Every SINGLE trainer on Australian tracks ALWAYS water their dogs immediately after a race and allow them to cool down. In my 25 years involvement at nearly all tracks in NSW, Vic, Qld and S.A, I can say that every dog is always watered and cooled down.
I suspect perhaps that Kamaksan suffered a heart attack in which case there would have been no chance of saving him. So it might look as if people are just leaving him to die on the ground but he probably was already dead or dying rapidly from heart attack.
Some dogs just have a bad heart and even the slightest overexcitement will cause them to collapse and die immediately. These things are undetected and unfortunately difficult to prevent.

  40. True Greyhound Lover avatar
    True Greyhound Lover

However I have just had a look at the link about Kamaksan and can now see where the ‘do gooders’ have slipped up with their lies… the dog on the ground is definitely not an Australian dog and so therefore it has nothing to do with Australia… it has the wrong coloured rug on (blue number 5… which is not an australian rug colour)plus the dog has a chainlink lead on, which none of Australian trainers would use on their dogs. We are not a backward country like the other countries that ill treats their dogs and dispose of them so callously. So please stop targetting Australian greyhounds…

  41. True Greyhound Lover avatar
    True Greyhound Lover

lol if you truly ever owned a greyhound or loved one, you would realise what a silly statement you have made.
There is not much money to be made from greyhound racing unless the dogs are EXTREMELY SUPER FAST and on average, many many dogs are fairly ordinary BUT see, they are not put down, they are allowed to race for the love of the sport. Racing car drivers know they could get killed anytime but they still race because they love it. You ask any of my greyhounds here if they are being forced to race and they will laugh at you.. ‘cos they get so frustrated if I don’t let them gallop in competition with other dogs. You can see the keenness, the joy and the anticipation of competition in their eyes. As soon as I open my car door, they all go off barking demanding to come along for the ride to the racetrack.
I don’t make much money out of the greyhounds, in fact Im on the pension now and going broke but I just love the dogs so much they get everything handed to them first before me… they get 100% freshly killed beef, high premium dog kibble, vegetable stews, egg yolks, yoghurt, bones, which all cost a fortune.. and I also spend a fortune having them in prime health with regular massages, toenails clipping, regular hydrobathing, in fact many Australian greyhound trainers feed and treat their dogs BETTER than they feed their own pets. The greyhounds are allowed to roam in their yards daily for a sunbake and some pleasure digging to keep their minds occupied.
Australia is so different to other countries in how we treat and house greyhounds, so I don’t understand why we are being targetted.
Our ruling body is already clamping down on cruel trainers and banning those that give drugs to their dogs to make them run faster etc so basically our sport is getting cleaner as the years go by.

  42. True Greyhound Lover avatar
    True Greyhound Lover

Yes unfortunately that is the sad part I have to agree is the truth. I would never sell my dogs overseas, I would rather put them down first if I was given a choice between overseas or death. But some big trainers know there is big money to be made from selling greyhounds to countries like Asia.. in fact Asia buyers are paying between $10,000 to $300,000 to buy quality greyhounds from Australia!! So if they were paying that much to buy them, why would they then end up disposing of the dogs once they finished racing??? I’ve been offered money to sell my dogs overseas but I have refused as my dogs are part of the family here.

  43. True Greyhound Lover avatar
    True Greyhound Lover

That is extremely rare to happen and I can tell you that Darragh has been outed for life and will never show his face at racetracks because many many many of us decent greyhound people would lynch him on the spot.
So please don’t make it out that every trainer is a Darragh.

Glad to hear that. I agree that some dogs want to race, just like in Spain some want to hunt but the issue is the surrounding circumstances. Ive copy and pasted some of the above again,

Denial is what you are in Sue. You make an offer of reporting cruelty that we witness when you know we are not there to see it. You then mock us because we can’t report individual cases because we do not live there. Its a bit empty and cowardly really. You answer some things that you think you can and ignore the other comments that you know you can’t challenge. As an animal rights activist, this petition’s author, Kisha Giannangelo, wrote a letter to Logan citizens with these two reasons for her concerns: 1) Gambling is a method of extracting taxation from communities without their awareness that it’s a harmful or involuntary enterprise, and 2) Greyhound racing is responsible for the deaths of as many as 20,000 greyhound pups every year. Furthermore, greyhound racing has been recognized as an inherently cruel sport and consequently abolished in 6 states in the US.

The only thing I don’t agree with the above comments is this one “They say the incident is common in an unethical industry that routinely disposes of a massive number of dogs each year and have called for Australia to ban the sport.” It is NOT common. Yes there are a few, a FEW unethical trainers that are in it for the money and will dispose of dogs but what you have to realise that in Australia, our authority are very very strict and require veterinary proof that the dog was disposed of humanely (with a certificate saying the dog was euthanized, which must be sent to the authority when it demands the trainer to account for what happened to any of the dogs in their kennels) so it would only be in the very very rare cases (probably some farmer/trainers out in the middle of nowhere, who have lived on the land all their life and think it’s normal to shoot the greyhounds humanely when its purpose is done) where a greyhound would be tortured so badly like in the Tasmania case.
It made me sick to read and see all those cruelty cases.. I know no decent dog owners would ever do it to their dogs so I can only assume that the person that did the torture, is truly an evil and troubled person.
That’s what you should be looking at… not linking greyhound racing and cruelty cases together.
You should be proscuting the person that tortures animals, not targeting the sport and the decent dog owners.
Many greyhounds are still racing happily beyond the age of 3-4 years old, with modern technology helping to keep them sound and healthy, they are living longer and racing longer, if you see those older greyhounds racing then you would assume they are much loved and will very likely end up as housepets as a reward for their loyalty.
Another thing I do agree with unfortunately with the above common is that overbreeding is a problem in Australia..I hate to say this against the industry but yes.. too many people are breeding without thinking of the future. I know I am a responsible breeder and so are many others I know of, but there are still too many others that think they can make money selling pups and breeding more litters before the previous litters are even old enough to reach the racetrack.
But in regard to the comment that Australia sends a large number of greyhounds to Asia countries for food, I can’t believe that as I know many are SOLD for huge sums of money (between $10,000 to $300,000) to China for racing/gambling purposes. Now I don’t really know (or want to know, just makes me too ill to think of dogs unhappy or hurt in any way) what happens to these greyhounds for sure after they have finished racing, but I have been reliably informed by insiders that the buyers in China revers their greyhounds so much that they keep them on as stud dogs/brood bitches to breed their own future industry over there. I mean, why would you pay such a huge sum of money for something only for it to end up in your soup??
I pray that it is true that greyhounds sold to China actually are looked after well.

And yes I expect a rude and aggressive reply from you as that is the type of person you appear to be, not a gentle animal lover at all, prove me wrong please Simon. You said,
“For example the fact that the Tasmanian RSPCA provide facts around racing being the real killer. Come on Sue, lets hear your answer to that and not just the childish mocking that we can’t witness something with our own eyes or that we make a mistake about the colour of racing coats.

Those that are successful eventually succumb to injury or are washed up by the age of three.”
No Simon the RSPCA did not say that, read what is published on the propaganda site you took that from…..”animal rights campaigners accuse greyhound racing of being the real killer. They say the incident is common in an unethical industry that routinely disposes of a massive number of dogs each year and have called for Australia to ban the sport.”
Animal activists said that just as they said the incidence is common…more lies. And would you like to tell me how the Animal Activists can estimate a figure that is 60% higher than both the RSPCA and the greyhound industry states? Every greyhound born in Australia is registered so I know who I believe would know the correct figure. And the RSPCA has no affiliation whtsoever with greyhound racing or breeding in Australia so I see no reason for them to quote a false figure. But no the propaganda sites have to lie don’t they?
The Activists on that propaganda site also state there are “95 clubs holding more than 4000 meetings each year in Australia…..more lies. There are 52 greyhound tracks in Australia spread over 5 States and 2 Territories. Many of these tracks do not race every week, a couple race twice a week, most race once a week, do the maths yourself.
Now in answer to poor Go Bronco who was left to die in a hot car, that did happen (2½ years ago) and was an isolated incident, I have never heard of anything similar ever in Australia although there have been numerous reports of other breeds dying after being left in hot cars, and even a few reports of children and babies dying in the same circumstances. The trainer of Go Bronco Terry Darragh was brought before the courts and was jailed over the incident, he was also banned for life from ever owning or training any greyhound much to the delight of all greyhound lovers in Australia and I can tell you if they ever got hold of him he would be wishing he had never been born.
The Lorna Edwards reports from the Herald, mentioned here a couple of times regarding a greyhound who last month was dumped near Hobart with its ears cut off. Again that did not happen last month it happed in 2004 yet it appears in all the propaganda websites that you all read that it happened last month. My opinion on that is that whoever could do anything like that to a greyhound or any other living creature obviously needs some serious help, I for one would love to get my hands on them. But again it is an isolated inicident, and I would say one of about four or five that have occurred in Australia in the past 20/30 years, I do believe it was a more common occurrence prior to that but thank goodness cruelty to any animal is no longer tolerated in Australia. We do however hear of cruelty to animals other than greyhounds on a more frequent basis and those perpetrators are also hauled before the justice system and abhored by the people.
Regarding the export of greyhounds to Asia, many in the greyhound industry do not agree with that practice, we are told that the greyhounds are well looked after and never would they end up on the streets or in the food chain as many other breeds do. BUT because I am not there to witness it first hand and I am yet to see a published picture of a retired greyhound in Asia I currently stand against the export of greyhounds from Australia to Asia. I will point out though that the same pictures that are appearing on the propaganda websites (for instance the greyhounds in a barrel) have been appearing on those websites for 10 years that I know of so maybe it is about time they went to Asia and let us know what is happening today, and perhaps take a few more pictures to replace the old ones.
You know if those propaganda websites reported only the truth and concentrated on trying to help the greyhounds who desperately need help throughout the world instead of publishing so many lies they would receive support (both physical and financial) from the greyhound industry in all countries, unfortunately that is not the case and I personally could not support any group who knowingly publishes propaganda, I could be donating to something that doesn’t exist and wondering where the money went. If only they had more credibility, but you don’t achieve credibility by publishing lies for the sake of sensationalism. The truth goes a long way with most people.
That’s it for me unless someone has a current cruelty report. I won’t be responding to the past.

Why does anyone have to prove anything to you, who do you think your are exactly? other than someone who uses puppy farms and promotes an animal sport. Reality check is needed Sue, no-one needs to prove anything to you especially not those who are trying to save the very dogs you help destroy.

What’s wrong with what Sue said, have you any response to the facts she has presented before you, or have you chosen to close off your ears and eyes and pretend her facts are not true, and that the only facts you will 100% believe in, is the propaganda put forward by the activist website?
What have you got to say about the fact that the greyhounds in a barrel is an old photo, and that many many photos of greyhounds being tortured, were taken many years ago? What have you got to say about the fact that the website has yet to put up new photos of any more cruelty cases?
I applaud that you are so strong to defend against torture of animals but please open your ears and eyes and try to find out more about the propaganda being put forward before you go attacking those in the greyhound industry for shamelessly ‘exploiting and gambling’ on these wonderful animals.
Find out the truth. Like Sue said, we would jump at the chance to sign any petition or donate to any causes that wants to protect our wonderful greyhounds, but we need to know they are actually ‘genuine’ causes and not a cause that spread lies and distorts facts and publish old photos to get what they want.

Here are some cases of cruelty to greyhounds in australia in the link below. By the look of your comments on the australian forum that we can now all see it seems someone should be looking into you and not you into them. Puppy farms……….. tut tut.
Greyhound Racing – Industry of Profit and Pain?
The image of fast and agile greyhounds racing hides an industry that relies heavily on profit. Just like horse racing, the public is misled into thinking that the animal is doing what it loves to do best- to run. However, there are people involved within the industry that abuse the animal in the hope of making a lot of money. The animal is seen as a means of making money for the people involved in their ownership, training and industry. Unfortunately, the animal is seen as being primarily a commodity- something that is a way of making money and like all other practices that rely on animals for profit, there are often cruel practices involved. It is not a ‘sport’ but a gaming industry in which the amount of money a dog generates determines his or her expendability.
Apart from the animal cruelty issue, the greyhound racing industry also involves corrupt conduct and bribery involving officials, in particular those of the Greyhound Racing Authority (NSW). A report by the I.C.A.C (Independence Commission Against Corruption) details the level of corruption.
How do they make them race?
Greyhounds are naturally docile and gentle creatures. Trainers use a variety of tricks to make them aggressive for the racing track. Although it is illegal under the Prevention’s to Cruelty to Animals Act to use live bait to train a dog to run faster, there is no enforced body to check whether live lures are used. Many trainers believe that live lures is essential to teach their dogs to chase mechanical lures at race time. Live lures include such animals as chickens, rabbits, and cats. An event known as “coursing” involves greyhounds chasing, terrorizing and eventually killing smaller animals within fenced enclosures. Greyhounds do not need this “taste for blood” as they are not blood hounds, but primarily a sight dog.
There has also been evidence that some injured dogs have been injected with illegal drugs to mask injuries whilst others are pumped with illegal performance enhancing drugs such as amphetamines and anabolic steroids.
Although the people involved claim that they “love their dogs”, they only “love” those dogs that perform the best and make them money. The image of greyhound racing as being a wholesome, family-orientated sport masks cruelty, mistreatment, and experimentation.
What happens to those that don’t make the grade?
Greyhounds used for racing rarely reach over the age of five years old. If able to live as a companion animal, a greyhound may live 13 years or more. A significant number of dogs do not even end up racing. Many are either not fast enough or prone to continual injury forced upon them by continual training. If they do remain injury-free some may have an average of 70 starts in their short career. Greyhounds suffer a variety of injuries from foot pad abrasions, ligament strains and leg fractures, to broken bones and broken toes. Due to their need to be muzzled, they are prevented from protecting themselves from irritating insects and licking their own sores. Due to the long periods of kenneling and confinement greyhounds have been known to suffer from dehydration and heat stroke. The continual stress placed on their body can also lead to heart attacks.
The industry kills greyhounds at various ages in the dogs’ lives because they are no longer profitable, either from injury or lack of racing potential. Only some greyhounds are euthanized by veterinarians involved in the industry. Many even end up abandoned at local animal shelters and pounds. Others are left to languish on private properties. Documented RSPCA cases have even uncovered many horrific cases of greyhounds that have been disposed of by drowning, shooting, beating , or being buried alive.
For a list of various reports, cruelty cases and actions surrounding greyhound racing in Australia, http://www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/igreyhound.html
Due to the Australian greyhound industry not wanting the public to know how many greyhounds are bred and raced, they don’t keep records of the number of dogs killed. It has been estimated that for every one greyhound that has reached racing entry level represents seven others that have been “culled”.
    Greyhounds as experimental subjects
Due to the ‘genetic purity’ of the breed, discarded greyhounds are often used as experimental subjects in many vivisection and research facilities at universities and veterinary schools. Many heart and lung experiments are carried out on greyhounds. Although it is no longer legal in NSW for council pounds to supply dogs to research laboratories, the endless supply of greyhounds is available, since the owners surrender them over directly.
The buck does not stop here
Australia is part of an international push to promote greyhound racing in Asia. Many dogs are exported to China for racing, with a lot of people in Australia profiting from the export. There is an unknown number of Australian bred greyhounds that are sent each year to race in China, and more recently in Vietnam and Korea. Due to very poor animal welfare laws in these countries, most dogs would be transported, housed and raced under terrible conditions. Undercover investigations have shown greyhounds have been tortured, skinned alive and murdered. Furthermore, due to dogs being part of their accepted diet, especially in rural areas, many, if not most, dogs would end up slaughtered for human consumption.
Furthermore, the greyhound industry refuses to be even partly responsible for the greyhounds, especially those sent to Asia.
“Greyhounds Australasia is not responsible for racing or welfare, our office if you like, is the glue that brings all the authorities in Australia and NZ together. We facilitate actions in relation to all facets of greyhound racing, but don’t have any regulatory controls.” – Greyhounds Australasia ( http://www.galtd.org.au )
In Australia there are only five adoption groups dedicated to greyhounds. Known as GAP (Greyhound Adoption Programme) there is one in each of the following states- NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia. However, there are no retirement sanctuaries available for those 20,000- 25,000 greyhounds no longer needed by the greyhound racing industry.
    What Can You Do?
As a secondary student you are legally not allowed to gamble. However, once you are of age to gamble on racing animals, then the choice is clear – do not gamble on racing animals. By doing so you are indirectly supporting the cruelty.
Tell others, especially those adults who do gamble, about the hidden cruelty involved. Unfortunately, due to the glamorized image portrayed by the greyhound racing industry, many people do not know of the hidden cruelty involved.
Run a campaign at your school to help raise awareness and funds for the greyhound adoption group in your state. NSW students go here: http://www.gapnsw.org.au

You go on about how tracks only race once or twice a week then you say do the maths but you fail to mention what you say here on other forums that has now been exposed in other galgonews articles,
“No need for another club with the Gold Coast having 3 tracks and racing 7 days a week, as long as we satisfy the Unitab agreement. Not really any need for licencees either, a couple of hand picked contract trainers will suffice, maybe a couple of hand picked puppy farmers, no need for breeders in Qld anymore.
I recall the same thing being bandied around about 15 or so years ago but that was the GRA putting it forward then, no need for them to go down that path again, it’s being done for them and this time they won’t get the blame”
You are being very selective with the facts you present. On this site you claim to be a greyhound lover but on the other forum you are clearly in it for other reasons.
That along with the puppy farms you support I also will put my energy elsewhere than stay here and argue. There is no point.

Whats wrong with what Sue says is that she is very selective with the truth. She only talks about the tracks that dont race that often but she fails to mention this part (below). How we can take this seriously?

You can’t have it all, you can’t say that the protesters are full of crap because a photo is a few years old and then expect us to believe what she is saying when she completely contradicts herself.
I am sure many greyhounds are treated like kings in Australia just as many are in spain now but the fact still remains if there wasnt such a surplus of greyhounds for racing there wouldnt be such a high slaughter rate. For me this is exactly the point and why I feel sad. It is my opinion and I am free to have it.
We can throw figures back and forth but we wont change each others opinions so whats the point, we have tried and its getting no-where so we will continue to campaign and you will continue to race your greyhounds. End off.

Maybe if you understood greyhound racing in Australia you would understand what that post meant. We don’t have and have never had any track that has raced 7 times a week. My post was in regard to exactly what we don’t want here, not what we have here, I was protesting about the very suggestion of it.
We don’t want to go down the path of America where greyhounds lived at the race tracks which did race 7 days a week, please believe me it is just not like that here in Australia. And I can tell you if Australia does ever go down that path, which I don’t believe is how a greyhound should be treated, then I will be marching right alongside you guys.

Well, this has been a very interesting debate and,
as ever, passions run high between those who advocate greyhound racing and those
who abhor the cruelty inflicted on the dogs.
I will continue to push the protest campaign.
Those innocents who have no voice need the rest of us to try and protect them
from the exploitation of the breeders, trainers, racetrack owners and betting
    shops.
Personally, I strongly feel that everyone who
breeds an animal, apart from those being saved from extinction, should be
castrated, have their hands chopped off, and kept in small cages and runs, just
like the way most of the animals they bring into this world are
    kept.
I lived very close to Newmarket in Suffolk UK, and
the horse breeding and racing industries sicken me just as much as do the dog
breeders and cat breeders. Positively sickens me.

the australian greyhound you are talking about, look at the picture, it is not australian at all… although breed in australia it was not an australian greyhound and the death didn’t happen in australia. I am involved in the industry here and it is great, the only thing i would stop is exporting dogs to countries like china… otherwise greyhound racing is here to stay.

    Bonjour
Thanks for commenting. Im never surprised
that people involved in greyhound racing never see further than what they want
to see. Supporters of greyhound racing hide behind the claims that it is a
great industry – if its so great, why do greyhounds continue to suffer….and
if youd stop exporting dogs to China, do something about it.
    Beryl

  78. mitch avatar
    mitch

I am not willfully blinded.. you say why do greyhounds still suffer, well I beg to differ. I have seen the ins and outs of the industry, aspects i like and aspects i do not. But none of this in concern of animal welfare, this is one of the aspects i like. China does not have greyhound racing on the mainland, only in maccau thus alot of the bad press generated is a falsehood. in maccau it is relitevily new and i’m not sure what goes on there, i’ve heard from some that it is up to standard, i’d just rather as a personal prefence like to see dogs for racing kept here.
It’s not hard to see why so many people are behind greyhound, i know why, they are magnificant animals and cherished family pets. Thats why when negative press hits the industry it really sticks. I’m not blind and i know there have been well documented cases of abuse in the past and in other countries, just make sure when you’re making a claim at present you know where your facts came from. It might suprise you to believe that i too was against racing, i saw the propaganda websites, and heard the stories through word and mouth, but once i actually researched, got to a conclusion of objective facts, i fell in love with racing and never looked back, now i have an active role in it. i know why you believe what you believe, and it’s your conclusion to come to, i just really hope all of you against racing have looked at your own facts…. don’t trust grey2k, they are known liars, don’t trust extremely pro racing groups, they usually have their own agenda aswell… find facts, if any of you live in australia, i encoourage you to go to the track, there will be trainers and owners there to talk to, you can usually go look at the kennels and also see the parade. it isn’t as behind closed doors as you may think, trainers are usually pretty open and will let you even pat there dogs at the end of the night.

  79. mitch avatar
    mitch

i would also like to add that not many people understand the greyhound, owners of pets and even greyhound owners truggle to differentiate the diffence between the breed of greyhound and the average dog. But there is a big difference, the greyhound as breed is a sight hound. I mean i’m not bagging this sight or anything cause i know you’re fighting for what you believe in, but greyhounds aren’t even galgo’s. I just wish people knew what they were actually fighting for. read up on the breed, you may come to find that racing is as natural to them as breathing is to us. i encourage all of you to go on youtube and watch,”2006 wonderland kennel helper” part 1, 2 and 3. it’s not australian and their set up is actually quite different to here in australia, but i myself found it an interesting watch, it’s not exactly pro or against racing although i’d say given the last interview it is i guess for the benifit of pro racing. but yeah just really interesting to watch.

  80. Beryl Brennan avatar

    TypePad HTML Email
There are many points in your commentswhich I
would take issue with, particularly that greyhound owners struggle to
differentiate the difference between the breed of greyhound and the average dog
and that greyhounds are not galgos. Galgos are Spanish greyhounds, 110%
sighhounds, and if you purchased a copy of my book, you would learn the history
which links both breeds. And absolutely everyone who fights against
cruelty to greyhounds and galgos knows exactly what they are fighting for.
I find constructive discussion can be informative, but would not class your
comments and views in this category. As with most pro-greyhound and galgo
racing supporters, your comments show an extremely blinkered and uninformed
    view.
    Beryl

  81. mitch avatar
    mitch

galgo’s are sighthounds = correct. galgo’s greyhounds = incorrect. yes they are called spanish greyhounds, and i guess you could say they are a varient of a greyhound variety very loosely. But there are deffinate difference between the breeds and for you to express that they are both the same is false, and shows really how little research you’ve done. You’d find if you traced most breeds dogs back far enough that they link at a certain point, but that is not of discussion. there are deffinate differences in the physical, let alone genetic make up of the dog let alone genetic. Ears, coat, size and also disproportionate muscles. I am not pro galgo racing, and never will be, i’m not going to address my affairs in different countries as i know not of what goes on there (same in your case here), i have little experience and research in this area, although i will be researching in the near future as i am willing to back any cause that benifits greyhounds. It seems that as you’ve broadened your scope of targets, “Australia” you’ve forgotten to focus on the facts.. you said earlier, prove us trouble makers wrong, well we did, in this thread. i’m not really trying to argue with you to the point where you’ll except my point, as i know how you’ve been sucked in. merely just telling people viewing this thread formed through your subjective bias to actually look facts up. you’ll find i said not to trust pro or anti groups. regarding logan track, it will probably not go ahead… not cause of this petition but rather another choice of location for a multi complex venue.as far as knowing what you’re fighting for, well lets just say there has to be a problem before you can fix it. if you ever come to australia, and if you are serious about greyhound welfare here i suggest you should if you’re willing to shun it publicly, i’d be more than happy to show you around, let you do some work experience, show you different kennels tracks and owners. you’ll find that we have nothing to hide. many mistruths are said and expressed publicly, these vary from, abuse, starvation, kennelling and dispossability. you’ll find here in australia it is not financially visable to do all these, and regarding disposabilty illegal and heavily regulated. You have to taste a pie before you can critisize it’s taste…. in other words you can fight for animal welfare, but make sure you know there is a problem. as for my views not being constructive discussion, well they can only be constructive if they are tillised. as for my uninformed view, will i’m here doing it, where are you? i am a primary source and an eyewitness. i am not pro racing, i am pro greyhound welfare, which in this country includes racing. but i’ll always be pro greyhound welfare first. my uninformed views come from working within the industry, both up front and behind the scenes, may i ask where your unblinkered and informed views about greyhound racing in this (my) country come from?

  82. Simon avatar
    Simon

Yeah, sending your greyhounds to Asia to eventually become on the menu is definately great greyhound welfare. You say we were proved wrong on these threads… where exactly? As soon as we exposed Sue Burely she vanished. Turns out on other Australian forums she wasn’t quite concerned about greyhound welfare as what she made out to be on here. English television has exposed quite a bit about Australia lately, including your murdering of the poor Joey’s. The fact you can’t see there is a dark side shows you are completely and utterly blinkered yourself! The fact you say Beryl hasnt done her research shows how little you know considering she has a book published about galgos. Do more research yourself before you have the cheek to tell her to do so. I am glad you work for greyhound welfare but the fact you think Australia has that 100% covered shows you are cmpletely deluded and live in a fantasty world.

  83. mitch avatar
    mitch

reffer to my previous posts.. only greyhound racing is in maccau.. in mainland china it is illegal to gamble on racing although i have heard somewhere that it is a spectator sport. and although i do not support sending animals there, it is only because i do not know what goes on there, either do you by the sounds of it. hmm proved wrong, someone quoted the case of the australian greyhound dying… well wrong uniform, never registered and against common practise in australia to hose dogs down. you yourself quoted a figure of 25k of greyhounds bred here, well that is not from a reputable source and is a large difference from which the rspca estimates.
Mudering poor joeys? you’ll find that kulling of joeys has nothing to do with greyhound racing, although i’ll address it if need be, kangaroo’s are culled in australia and that is no secret, i do not support it although it is in the same category culling pests in your country. i do not know the full facts about that here but that is what i understand it to be. I’ve eaten kangaroo, it may sound strange to you, but it can be considered a food source here. and no matter what animal, either pet, live stock or wild animals, i am against all killings that cause unneccessary pain and suffering, and you’ll find most australians are. Book published about galgo’s??? yes i read up on that, from this site actually and was considering getting it, it is a solo project as i understand it, i could be wrong as i couldn’t actually find all the details of the book on here. But you’ll find that everything written, has a bias, and this book is no exception and i’m sure beryl as an author will probably agree with me that nothing can be completely objective no matter how hard we try, this includes stastics and relatively accurate and well informed information. As for galgo’s being a different breed than the greyhound, this is true, here if i tried to get a galgo registered to race they would not let me, this is as it is not a greyhound, not the same breed we use in australia to race. a saluki is sighthound aswell, this does not make it a greyhound.Simon you’ll see from viewing my posts i’m all in favour of people gaining their own conclusion and taking both sides of the story when it needs to be. i do not support galgo racing, i deffenately do support animal welfare. i do not think that it is 100% covered, nothing is, house pets are not 100% covered. animal cruelty is illegal everywhere, but it still occurs, in everyday homes, streets and possibly some trainers. but you’ll find in australia the laws regulations and authories do not tollerate this anymore and have clamped down hard on the industry in australia. just like joe blow next door could a buse his animals, he’d be more likely to get away with it, no mandatory kennel checks, vet checks before and after a race, identification and most of all he has no reason to keep the dog healthy. i’m not blind or blinkered.

that’s cause australia is not run like the us or uk. here there have been submissions for a new track, this is what this thread was about wasn’t it? you’ll find here there is plenty of interest by punters making greyhounds second to horse racing for the TAB whilst beating harness.
australia does haven’t large contracted owners like the us or uk that work at particular tracks. and betting is largely through the tab not through local bookmakers. thus anyone from anywhere can punt. what some people seem to forget is that australia is one of the largest countries in the worl, with one of the lowest populations. we are not short of land, so it is not hard to place dogs here, if not keep them as your own. the average trainer here would have a relatively small team, not like oversea’s, there are a couple of large ones, but that’s cause they are the best! but in saying that most people do it as a hobby or part time job, rather than sole income. dogs are high risk ventures. there is not that much money in it. and no it is not cause of lack of interest, it’s cause of the boards of particular racing bodies. you see as i mentioned before greyhound was above harness and below horse racing. but recieve the lest amount of money from the tab. but this is mainly because harness wouldn’t survive with extra additional funds, whilst greyhound racing is strong here. come to this country if you have grave concerns, i see you’ve been to spain, why not come here, it might be refreshing for you.

well beryl. you’ll find i wasn’t ranting at you. noone here has really replied to my statements or comments or that you’re wrong about a greyhound being a galgo. the different lineage, genetics and also physical difference. let alone the fact that galgo’s are middle distance whilst greyhounds are sprinters. the aren’t that closely related at all but i know of cases of cross breeding to make them faster. you seem to have forgotten what you are arguing about, i seem to have rebuttalled both you and simon. i admire you for the work you are doing in spain but really you have not done as much research about the situation here. tim makes a very good point, the industries here aren’t cruel and mean like you make them out to be. ring up or emeil the governing bodies, you’d probably get so much further working with them or against them. for some reason people think that ending racing will end abuse, it won’t and for many years australia has been regulating and enforcing animal welfare laws, rules and regulations. Thus making it in my opinion the hardest place to abuse an animal, there aren’t these stricks rules and regulations when you buy your pet or are keeping it as your companion. i’m nnot infering anything about you guys as you all seem like nice people, but the fact is i get checked out to make sure i don’t abuse my animals in my home and on my property, i get mandatory vet checks to make sure my greyhounds are healthy, my dogs get drug tested…. do your’s?
it seems that australia is alot further ahead of the rest of the world with greyhound racing and welfare than you guys might think. you’ll find it is very popular here and for the right reasons. contact grv and grnsw like tim said, it’s not working with the enemy like you may think, they have the same objectives as you.

oh and i did adress the articles against, the aact, well it seemed they were liars weren’t they. and all other cases you mentioned, well it seemed most of those few cases the people were caught and delt with. much to the credit of greyhound racing in australia.

Thank you for all the weblinks and information which will be useful for readers to follow up.
Thanks for the invite to Oz; as I live in France, Spain is an easier trip!

Thanks for both your comments. I agree greys are sprinters, galgos are more endurance runners, but they are both sighthounds and as such the differences in their physical and temperament characteristics are miniscule – as explained in my book.
And it is widely acknowledged that Spain is a Third World Country so far as the treatment of animals is concerned. If, as you state, the regulations in Oz are adhered to by everyone, (given the size of the country, how far will a vet travel to ensure conditions and requirements are met) then the Spanish could learn a lot from you too.
I am sure my readers will be very interested in the information you and Tim have provided.

I would also like to add to tim’s link to “the dogs” on the left hand of the screen, you’ll see how serious stewards take greyhound abuse in this country, they have just undergone a serious of follow up investigations disqualified, fined and suspended trainers. It’s all well and good to have regulations, every country has them. i’m just glad that in this country they are being enforced.

actually they did quiet a few times tell you what does happen to dogs who break legs are too old to race and do not make the track GAP, greyhound adoption program, there is one in every state in Australia there is other adoption places in Australia also, one person asked if they arent doing anything wrong then why get so worked up? If someone was accusing you of abusing your child which you were not would you just stand back and let the acusations fly? or would you stand up and tell the truth? I guarentee you would not shy away from it, I agree alot of the way that GALGOS are treated is very vicious and cruel, but in australia you are literally barking up the wrong tree, we have laws, rules and regualations that stop animal creulty againsts greyhounds, am I telling you to stop fighting for what you believe…hell no, but Australia is not like other countries in the world that treat these beautiful animals like they are a waste of space.
    thankyou for your time
