  • More galgos needing help in Mairena killing station, Seville

    On Friday, I was in the killing station of Mairena, Seville, to rescue a few small dogs, and found more than 30 galgos. They urgently need to get out of there and sheltered and fostered before they are sacrified.

  • My Christmas and New Year wish to you all

    2009 has been an amazing year for Galgo News. The number of readers has increased considerably, which means we are all getting the message about the plight of the galgos in Spain spread far and wide. We’ve had responses to some of our letter-writing campaigns, and we’ve highlighted the extreme cruelty inflicted, not only on galgos, but on all of Spain’s dogs. And we continue to praise and support the associations and volunteers who work tirelessly at the ‘blunt end of the wedge. One day, if we all work together, we WILL make a difference.

    Thank you all for your interest in the stories on Galgo News, and please spread the word, the galgos and podencos especially need everyone’s support.

  • Coping with Snow in Animal Refuges in Spain – Very Hard Work

    Arca de Noe 1209 250 Snow arrived in France yesterday. It’s fine for the Pyrenees for skiing, but no good for keeping animals. Frozen water pipes, frozen water buckets, grass under snow…..

    But for the Arca de Noé refuge in Albacete in Spain, it is even worse. This picture is of the refuge in summer. See what they are coping with, along with many other northern Spanish refuges and shelters. Look at the depth of snow, plus frozen water pipes, snow in the dog runs….I can’t begin to imagine what they cope with. The volunteers are absolute angels.

  • Olivenza Perrera – run by a woman – starving and killing dogs

    I speak English and French, but for Spanish, German, Italian etc, I rely on Internet translations. English is the International language and many of the people who email with information about the horrors of Spain do so in English. Sometimes things get lost in translation. But I applaud these people for contacting me.

    I have now been sent the following information on the Olivenza Perrera, in the Badajoz area, which is particularly bad for ALL dogs. It is run by a woman, the dogs in there are not fed before they are euthanaised after perhaps 15 or 20 days…………. there is an association which works tirelessly to save some of them and rehome them away from Spain.

    Proaniplant is accused of the ill-treatment of animals in what is the first
    case of its type in Spain

    The magistrate in the Provincial Court in Murcia has inspected video evidence supplied by the El Refugio animal protection group, and started the first ever criminal proceedings in Spain against an animal protection agency in Spain.

  • SOS Galgo save a puppy – Christmas should come early for him

    Galgo puppy ears cut off SOS Galgos 1209 250 This story will make you feel sick to your core. SOS Galgos have saved this little chap. 3 months old, he has had his ears and tail cut off. He is now in a refuge in Ciudad Real – I can tell you from experience – Ciudad Real is hell for humans, never mind animals. Can you give him a home?

  • Mairena galgos – making it to Holland with full EU passports

    Galgos in the dark 3.jpg cropped 300 I have a story to tell you about some more of the Mairena killing station galgos, but the information is on my laptop, and I think the hard drive has packed up! But what I can tell you is that Karmela continues to work tirelessly to save galgos from this hell hole, she puts the galgos in a kennels where they have vet checks, microchip, vaccinations, blood tests, and then they are cleared for transport to Holland where adoptions are arranged with Greyhound Friends Holland.

    By the time these galgos arrive in Holland, it costs about 450 euros. You can donate towards the work Karmela does through this association.

    SOS Galgos have also been helping save the Mairena galgos.

  • European Commission – the Cabinet replies to the stray’ dog problem

    Refuge Villarobledo 4 250 I have today received a reply to my letter of 18 November to the European Commission in respect of the welfare of dogs in Spain.

    ‘Dear Madam

    Thank you for your letter of 18 November 2009 concerning the welfare of dogs in Spain. Comissioner Vassiliou has asked me to reply on her behalf.

    The situation you are describing in your letter raises serious concerns for the welfare of those greyhound racing dogs which are neglected or killed at the end of their working season. You also write that there are pet dogs which are abandoned by teporary residents of Spain at the time of their return to their home countries.

  • El Refugio Kimba saves 4 more galgos from slaughter

    Refugio Kimba saved galgos 1209 250 El Refugio Kimba recently rescue these 4 galgos from the Kimba Gesser dog pound, prior to being killed. Despite the lack of space in the Kimba shelter, these beautiful galgos were saved. They have been named Danko, Ultrac, Gorka and Axel. See more pix on the website.
