• Guam Greyhounds – Disgraceful Disposal of Dogs

    Guam galgos edit
Guam is an island in the Western Pacific Ocean, the largest of the Mariana Islands. It belongs to the USA. Guam Greyhound Racetrack closed abruptly in November, resulting in hundreds of greyhounds being handed out to anyone who asked. The world is watching and protesting, and greyound rescue associations in the USA are desperately trying to deal with the situation. Read the background to the story, third item on the page, and here.

Pat Getz of Greyhound Protection League reports that the first two greyhounds, Houdini and Jet Li, have just left Guam. They are being flown to California, and a CA greyhound group will care for them till they are adopted out!

  • Don’t Sew or Knit? Sponsor someone to make a coat for a galgo

    Dog coats GIN Holland edit
For people who do not sew or knit, but would like to help with desperately needed coats for the galgos in Spanish refuges, Sandra Baas of Baas Galgo says it is possible to sponsor a warm coat for a greyhound ina Spanish shelter? For only 5 euros or 4 British Pounds a totally quilted coat, water-resistant, with a fleece lining is made by volunteers.

Winters in Spain are cold but even in the summer the nights can be very cool.
A lot of greyhounds in Spanish shelters are chilly without a coat. They are skinny, very often have to sleep outside, and with some bad luck, on the
    cold concrete.

    Here’s what to do

If you have problems with a bank transfer, send a cheque to Baas Galgo,

  • Operation Harry – European associations join forces to help the galgos

Galgo-rescueMany of you may wonder what happened with the dogs after being rescued by the guardia civil in operation Harry y Clavijo.

The dogs are relatively well, some very thin but on the way to recovery.

What is worrying is the fact that the dogs are not vaccinated. What happens if one falls ill – you can imagine!

Sandra Baas of Baas Galgo reports.

  • Over a year in a refuge – help Scooby Medina find homes for these galgos

Paz-galgoEva from Scooby Medina has sent a second list of galgos who have been in the refuge for over a year. Many of them were part of over 200 taken in a rescue in Seville in November 2007. They desperately need foster and adoption homes.

If any of you can take any of these dogs, either through your own association to refuges away from Spain, or offer foster or adoption homes, please get in touch with Scooby as a matter of priority.

Here’s one sweet girl. Paz, pictured, female
Paz arrived on February 6, 2008. She is a little beauty and has no problems. Being at the shelter for almost a year now, she would benefit from a home environment.

  • Long Term Residents of Scooby need Forever Homes

LailaThe plight of the galgos continues – the Spanish refuges and associations are overwhelmed with abandoned dogs. Here are some long-time residents with Scooby Medina, desperately needing homes, to make way for new incomers. Meet Laila who urgently needs to leave the shelter.

    Laila – female (Urgent)
You can see that she has had way too many puppies. She is timid and the last I heard she is also getting skinny because she is not confident enough to eat with other dogs around. So, if I was to pick an urgent case to leave the shelter now, it would be her.

Eva describes some of the others. Check out the Scooby Medina website for more information.

  • Inner Strength – Food for Thought

If you can start the day without caffeine or pep pills,
If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,
If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when loved ones are too busy to give you time,
If you can overlook when people take things out on you when,
through no fault of yours, something goes wrong,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can face the world without lies and deceit,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax without liquor,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,
If you can do all these things,
Then you are probably the family dog.

  • Leaving the Hell of Spain – Living the Life in the USA

    Mosey
Chris Mosey lives in USA, and last year she and a friend flew to Spain to volunteer their help with the Scooby Refuge.  They also took 7 galgos back to USA with them.Meet Perico, the galgo she took back with her for her own family, and read her story.

‘I’ve been involved in animal care, health, and rescue most of my life.  I became hooked on greyhound rescue about 10 years ago.  I know what a difficult life an unwanted animal can have in the United States, whether it’s a stray on the streets, in a shelter, or awaiting adoption or death in a kennel after its racing career is over.
