Temperatures in northern Spain in winter are below freezing. Many of the animal refuges and shelters do not have even basic kennels – it’s just a compound within a breeze block wall, with shelter provided by a motley assortment of pallets, tin sheets, donated bedding – anything!

Our dear friend Charlotte, living in Madrid, the English speaking voice of so many of the Spanish volunteers and refuges, tells stories of abandoned podencos desperate for homes, and of the 2nd Fiesta de Galgos at the beginning of December. She also tells the story of a boxer, found at death’s door – how can everyday Spaniards stand by and allow dogs to starve to death on their doorsteps?!!

Nanni – adopt him – give him the best Christmas Gift
Meet Nanni, just 3 years old and a very handsome, striking galgo. He spent a night at my home recently during a rescue by L’Europe des Levriers, when 10 galgo puppies and a dozen galgos were brought out of Spain.Most of the dogs are either adopted or have foster homes. But Nanni is still searching. If we had not already got Floyd, our French lurcher X, I would take Nanni like a shot!
He’s a bit nervous, but not been maltreated. He ended up in a perrera and was due to be put down. He’s got his Spanish passport, castrated, microchipped and vaccinated, please give this VERY handome chap a chance of a family life.

Socks for Galgos? Not as Daft as it Sounds!
Maria Daines, the singer/songwriter who performs concerts to raise funds for animal charities, told me her Mum is knitting socks for galgos! So I asked her for the story. Here’s what Maria wrote.‘An artist from UK has found a novel way to help Galgos keep warm this winter. Mary Coe from Cambridgeshire sent some knitted socks to her friend Jeanet in The Netherlands thinking Jeanet could wear them in the snow.
