No apologies for the ‘stupid’ title to this post. I have put in key words and want to reach as many people as possible looking at Spain, for whatever reason. Update on the rescue of 74 galgos/podencos – mostly galgos – from a gypsy in Murcia, who has a denuncia against him. Here is what Tina Solera of Galgos del Sol says.
‘Approx 74 galgos and pods. GdS managed to rescue 9 with the help of The Henrietta Foundation who will foster 4 of those for us. La Fortelaza took 8, and another lady there took approx 5 I think and has another 5-6 reserved but has to come back. GalgoConnection Spain in Valencia are taking 3. So there are approx 45 left that are all due to be taken away and put to sleep on Friday 27th January 2012. ‘ I believe although that date is not concrete.
Those 9 galgos will cost us well over 1500 euros as it is and there is no funds for me to take more right now but if other charities come forward I could maybe transport to them via MRW.’
The refuges are overflowing but, please, these dogs didn’t ask to be where they were, 74 in the hands of one man!!! They didn’t ask to be born, starved, locked up from where there was no escape. Someone told me that the German organisation Denia Dogs takes some dogs from this place. In fact they had some similar photos in their news last week.

These photos were taken yesterday as dogs were taken out.
Just to update you, GdS has 9 at present who have started vet treatment. We are funding transports to other protectoras. We will take a further 7 this week and possibly a further 12 sponsored by GIN UK but we need to find space for them first. Please know that you donations are being spent to save as many as possible but each galgo costs approx 200/300 euros plus kenneling on top of that plus transport. We have had some really generous donations and we appreciate it very much. GdS has had alot of support from The Henrietta foundation which has been great but with the manpower we have and the money we will struggle to do anymore. If any other associations come forward thats great. I think many other associations are getting involved but I dont know who, when or how many galgos as I cant keep up with it all but I guess they will appeal on their own behalf for donations also when they have the galgos. Thanks for the update, Tina, you have done incredible work,and the emotional and physical strain must be tremendous. Great that you have the support of GIN in the UK and GRIN in the US to help you. As you say, you just have to find places to keep the dogs and fund it all. It’s good that in situations like this, many associations step in and work together. Truly an International operation. Bless you.
Quick update – We have commited now to a further 12 but he doesnt want to give more away at the moment. Friday he will be forced to do so by the guardia so Andrea from the Henrietta Foundation will be there on our behalf to take them. Carmen who is not a protectora but works with germany will take a further 10 (I have offered help with funding thru your donations but she said the germans have funded it and she would prefer I use it to feel the remaining galgos that will have to stay with him, as he is allowed to keep some so we will do this and buy wormers also and keep in touch with him). All could be rescued by friday if it goes to plan! Two are now on their way to Silvia at galgoconnectionspain!

I dont think this is the same one but I heard of a similar sitaution where there was 30 galgos so maybe this is that rescue…. I may be wrong tho..I dont remember seeing anything that looked like these photos but there was alot happening. I am quite sure tho that Sunday was the first day of the rescue and their is a german association involved which was being led by Carmen…. I still havnt got their name but have asked.
The French association from whom I adopted 3 of my dogs and with whom I have visited Spain on rescues, is also involved in helping save some of these dogs. Read about it (in French) and see photos on this link

Hi Beryl, does it say how many they are taking and how they are taking them because at the moment he is not releasing anymore? I am just wondering who is acting in there on belhalf of them so maybe I can ask how they are getting them out when we cant. He has started hiding them today so at the moment there is not many left on the property. I would appreciate any info. These photos were taken by Carmen on saturday but she is working with the german association. Its great this association are helping but no-one knows how they are getting them. Any info please as i dont understand French… thanks!

Thanks Cobie. Untill the guardia come we cant get the rest out for now but we will be in touch with him. I have his email. What will happen is we will take the rest out, put them in a holding area or temp kennels and then we can start sending them to other protectoras that offer help. If they arrange by MRW we need time to get the galgos to the vets first for their rabies. It is going to take time with so many galgos! Will be in touch when we know more. It is proving difficult to send directly from the site because each day things change with regards to what is happening, so its best to wait untill we have them in an area and then we can send them. We have 11 galgos from this site now and I would be happy to send some of those if we cant get more out as 11 is alot to take on in one go. The vets bills will already be sorted thanks to the donations. Thank you very much, we will defo be in touch!

They are taking 5. Beatrice (EDL president) and Cristina de Luna (vice president, lives in Madrid) both speak excellent English, so you can contact them direct. No problem with communication. Who is co-ordinating the GdS end as I understand you are now out of the country?
Update – At the moment all the dogs are hidden so for now none can go. La fortealeza’s are all reserved for germany, we have 11 and Carmen took 10 for germany i think, so 30 safe and sound which is great. The others cant leave but we have bought food which will be taken down saturday to keep them going. When the dogs come back we will start again….Andrea will take over for me!
Forgot to say the two that went to Silvia came back due to a few problems so they will now stay with us.
Tina has asked me to write to say it’s Denia Dogs in Germany who have taken 10 dogs from the gypsy through Carmen. Please donate to them.
Posted on behalf of Tina Solera/Galgos del Sol. Unfortunately no additional dogs could be collected at the end of last week when the Guardia was due back, as they had been moved offsite and hidden. However today the hunter has agreed to release another 5 dogs to Tina this coming Friday (3rd), so that will be 16 galgos with GdS in total. Of the 16 GdS galgos, 7 are now booked to travel to the UK in March; 3 galgas to LurcherSOS, 2 galgos to Northants Greyhound Rescue and a galga and galgo to Kama’s Cave, on behalf of a Dutch association who work with this UK rescue. From the donations many people have kindly made Tina has passed 1000 euros to La Fortaleza, the rescue that took 10 galgos, to be used towards vet costs. As well sacks of dog food have been purchased for La Fortaleza with donated funds. They don’t have a website but they do have a Facebook page and you can read more there.

Tina has spoken to Cristina and assuming GdS gets the additional 5 galgos on Friday they will be going to L’Europe des Levriers with donations covering transport and pet passport. Tina is in the process of contacting Fermin at Scooby to see if he can assist with one very traumatised galgo who needs a placement with people who have experience of this type of dog, and possibly one other.

Posted this before but for some reason it isn’t showing so trying again. Tina has spoken to Cristina and assuming she gets the additional 5 dogs on Friday they will go to L’Europe des Levriers with pet passport & transport covered by donations. Tina is in the process of contacting Fermin at Scooby to see if he can help with a badly traumatised galgo who really needs experienced handling, plus possibly one other galgo could go there.

A quick update, the collection of the additional galgos has been put off until Monday afternoon (by the other parties involved). One of the 5 to be released has been injured in a fight, Tina was going to pick this galgo up and take it to the GdS vet but Denia Dogs has already collected it, so she’s hoping to get the remaining 4 galgos out on Monday.
